Howdy all,i just wanted to know wether you guys play MMORPGS(such as Star Wars galaxies,Final Fantasy XI,Ultima Online,Everquest and others...)becuase recenelty i tried my 3rd attempt at an MMORPG and bought ffxi i got pretty addicted to the game, and for the first time i experience in-game cutscenes as if i'm playing a single player game...although sooner or later you'll have to find a party of sorts to advance any further, its still a cool game http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smokin.gif

Oh yeah you'll notice i don't post alot nowadays becuase my life is wasted on the game, and on other real life issues..

I do not simply because I cannot buy into having to pay for the software, than continue giving tithes on a monthly or yearly basis. Way too much money to sink into the next cheap thrill.

I voted Gah, in the absence of an 'I'd like to, but don't have the cash' option.

That's free, but not really finished. But the plot beyond is written by roleplaying, not by scenarists. Faaar more interesting than having macros to increase the fishing skill.....

Played Ultima Online for a bit, didn't like the whole elitist thing. Am very interested in Star Wars mmporg looks nice but i don't want go for that one really, the one that i've heard of thats held my interest is the WarHammer universe one. Never played any warhammer but the game is supposed to be huge and varied, sounds cool.

Don't like the idea of paying monthly tho but most are in dollars so if you spend in pounds it makes it so much cheaper in my eyes $10 = £6 pfft thats nothing a month

I would generally be interested, but I did not yet as the time I would be able to spend for such a game would not justify the monthy fee that I would have to pay.

...also my wife would probably kill me if I bought a game that would not only result in ongoing expenses but also in me sitting glued to my PC arguing that I have to play the game to avoid the waste of money.

No.

Because for the same time and money you can get a Doctorial Degree from your local uni.

You can't actually win in a mmorpg unlike in FPS or RTS. That's a major letdown to me.
Oh, if someone comes across a mmorpg which has a rich storyline with good characters comprable to Planescape or Baldur's Gate: Let me know, yeah?

Very concisely stated, and accurate to boot.

Hey np m8 The squadron is progressing nicely we finally got everyone flying formation within 20 meters of each other. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif So basics are sorting themselves out and we are moving towards combat tactics http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-guitarist.gif so all's going well on this end.

Another no here - it's not only the monthly cost, but also to make the game woth playine one needs to spend so much time that the rest of one's life suffers.

I played many of them over the past few years. What started as a very promising genre with huge potential, turned into a series of games following the same worn path. I am waiting for the next breakthrough MMORPG that will take the risk and offer something new and exciting.

I played, in order:

* Ultima Online – This was my first one and still considered to be the best, despite all its numerous problems and being own by one of the most obnoxious gaming publishers (EA). I still own an active account I can’t bring myself to close which I login to once every couple of months.

* EverQuest – I can understand why this appeals to so many people, I was hooked for couple of months until I woke up and realized how boring this game actually is.

* Asheron’s Call – Played the beta, owned the game. This one is actually not so bad, was fun to play with an old group of friends for a while.

* Anarchy Online – The clumsy implementation and the huge amount of bugs killed this game before it was really born. Has some potential but I gave up real quick.

* Dark Age of Camelot – Took me couple of weeks to realize this is EverQuest minus the things that could have made EverQuest fun.

* Shadowbane – Played the beta and hated it, never bothered to buy the game.

* Star Wars Galaxies – I knew I shouldn’t buy this one but I went and got it anyway. Of course it has nothing to offer besides beautiful graphics and the Star Wars franchise. Almost zero content and the same repetitive gameplay I learned to hate so much.

After SW:G I’ve promised myself I won’t buy another MMORPG until I am fully confident it has more to offer besides gaining levels and collecting items, some real roleplaying elements would be nice for a change. But of course I will go and get EverQuest II and World of Warcraft and hate myself for this…

I'd also like to but can't afford to/wouldn't be able to play it enough to make it worthwhile (PC's at my Fiance's house)

Oops. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mecry.gif I started a thread similar to this relating specifically to UO and UXO before I saw this poll. Here is a link if anyone is interested:

Roma Victor (http://www.roma-victor.com)

And there's no monthly charge

I don't play them anymore, because...

-It is really easy to get addicted to these games.Actually one might get addicted to other genres as well, but the nature of MMORPGs makes me waste much more time than any other genre does.

-I want to be part of a story when I am playing a RPG.MMORPGs don't have a story, just a world.
