Seems the only two games I really play these days are M:TW and IL2-Forgotten Battles. And I'm looking forward to the IL2 expansion pack coming out soon with the P_38 and the Spitfire. Going to Pick up LOMAC soon too. Think I'll need an upgrade for it though.

It was my view that no kill was worth the life of a wingman. . . .
Pilots in my unit who lost wingmen on this basis were prohibited from leading a [section].
They were made to fly as wingman, instead.

Hmm...well LOMAC is pretty demanding on hardware IMO. So yo should really wait till when you get your next PC. what are your specs btw ?

FB is not that demanding OTOH. A basica Saitek X-45 throttle and stick HOTAS will set you back 100 euro and forward like 20000 euro in terms of entertainment value.

I used to play flight sirs alot, actually it was pretty much all I played before Shogun came and released me from my addiction. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-dizzy2.gif

Now I don't touch any flight sims any more, cause then I will be so hooked that I can't get anything done.

My trigger finger still moves everytime I see my flat mate play them though... and now they are so much better too... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mecry.gif

Hey Sinan, not seen you round for ages mate http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif keep your eyes peeled in the Throne Room for an Egypt campaign btw.

Anyways, that shot of those A-10s banking into the sunset is SWEET http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/bigthumb.gif

Sinan,

Yep, those screens were great The A-10 shot is fantastic The nicets I've seen.

I've got an Athlon XP2000/512RAM/GF4-4200 128 Meg video/MS FFB2 flightstick.

Pretty good for IL2-FB until my homemade missions get too big, but is probably a bit light for LOMAC. Going to up to a 3Ghz and a ATI 9800 256 Meg come summer. That's when the dough rolls in.

Runs Medieval really well though. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/bigthumb.gif

Not really a flight sim, but Star Wars Tie Fighter was a great ride while it lasted. Something about playing the evil side, shooting down X-Wings from a next-generation TIE Defender that no other military can match.... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-glasses2.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smokin.gif

Tie fighter was great fun, especially with the add-on. The feeling of power in a T/D was something, but the feeling of power tearing through those T/Ds in a missile boat loaded with heavy rockets was something to behold.

I'm also a big fan of I-War 2. A much bigger ship then the typical lethe fighters, but the newtonian space flight really is well done. Freespace is nice too, but I've been unable to find FS2 anywhere, and the fixed 640x480 of FS1 really does make the game look unbelievably dated.

I've played flight sims since F15 Strike Eagle on the C64. Or B17 Bomber on the Intellivision.

IL2 Sturmovik is my current favorite. I wish Oleg would do WWI. Red Baron was the best.

All flight sim enthousiasts (sp?) unite I have been playing slight sims since the early years (Solo Flight on the Atari 800XL was the first for me) but now it's Forgotten Battles and of course:

May I recommend Combat Flight Simulator 3. It's got great graphics a nice campaign setup and planes can be added to it by people making custum games.

If you want cheap but excellent flight sim get Jane's WWII Fighters, it's a bit old but still great.

And for you star wars guys get X-Wing Alliance, although I'm an Imperial at heart it's still a great game.

I was a Janes WWII Fighters junkie for years. some of the new mods are just incredible. Best damn cockpits you'll ever see, even today.

I loved CFS1, just excellent. Hundreds and hundreds of hours on it. CFS2 was good fun. I thought CFS3 sucked so incredibly, blisteringly, insectidly bad that I treid to trade it online for... anything. No takers. Ended up giving it away. $80 down the drain. And they can shove CFS4 right up... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-furious3.gif

Ahhhh... the good old days.

I was addicted to EF2000... used to be on that all the time. Then DID ruined it by releasing F22: Total War (spooky) which was pants. Then they folded soon after that.

Now that I have a nice shiny new beast to run them on... I must take a look at what is flying.

(PS: loved Tie Fighter too).

I used to be addicted to Flight Sims myself, I started early on with F-15 Strike Eagle for the commodore 64, and went through the obligatory flight simulator programs,
I really used to love Gunship by Microprose and Gunship 2000, flying with a group of Apaches was awesome, I have not played any flight sims for quite some time although the newest ones look awesome, I would defintley need a PC upgrade, I do love a good dogfight ..LOS

I felt the same way when I first played it, it lacked that polished feel but that was more due to the beautiful mods I had downloaded for Jane's than anything of CFS3's own doing. My only complaint is how weak the ships are and how if I fly for the luftwaffe my squadron makes so much of a difference that we invade britain and win the war.

I used to play CFS2 as well and thought it was pretty good... until I picked up IL2-Sturmovik... I also have IL2 Forgotten Battles now, that must be the best (WWII) flight sim out there Maybe even the best Flight Sim period. Lock On has good cards but it'll still need some time (and some patches http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif ).

My first one was some combat sim on the Spectrum whose name I've forgotten. I never did the hang of that one.

About a decade later I found Super EF2000. Ooh, what a joy. I loved flattening the Soviet radar stations with rockets. Violating Swedish airspace and preying Soviet shipping was also a thrill. I doubt there'll ever be a game which uses as many key combinations as that one.

I had a short stint with Comanche 2 which I liked because I didn't have anything better to compare it with.

Then came the real helo sim, Longbow 2. Tankbusting, helicombat, insertions, extractions, the mowing down of ground troops, door gunners, max speed nap of the earth flying while evading fire form pursuing Hinds. Whooa Great game.

IL2 Stormovik. Giving all you got for comrade Stalin and busting Fritzes. Ground attacks have always been my favourite so I do most of my flying in the IL2.

IL2 Forgotten Battles. I prefer the original because FB gives me some sound problems and even worse performance than the original IL2. My PC is quite slow for a 1.9 Ghz and I get appalling frame rates at times. It's still a very good game.

I prefer WWI sims.

If you want to dog fight, I mean REALLY dog fight, you must fly in the Great War. One or two rifle caliber machine guns. Ranges were you can see the enemy up close and personal.

Stick and rudder flying with barrel rolls, loops and Immelmans. You may even SEE Max Immelman http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

The guy in the back had a camera and a Lewis gun not a radar set. Locking on is what your eyeballs were for. No annoying radio chatter either.

Tension is high. There are no bailouts. If you’re not dead in the cockpit you get to contemplate eternity on the way to your doom. You land the crate or die trying.

I was disappointed to learn that Oleg Maddox is doing the Battle of Britain instead of WWI. The Med would have been better. Or the Pacific. BoB has been done enough already.

I played European Air War a hell of alot. Some really beautiful addons.

Now I've got IL2 FB. Which is stunning, even if the load times are shocking. plus i have a problem loading the paratrooper mesh for the russian so i can't play vhalf the Axis campaigns, and if i fly as russians it runs out of memory and drops to desktop as soon as I get in any sort of serious dog fight. Can get some of the early Bf 109 and FW190 campaigns to work, which are great, except that I can't stay on my leaders course to save my life (or his) :)

I'm looking forward to the Oleg Maddox BoB though I agree the Med would've been good. He is putting the Chianti party in though, so you will get to fly htose beautiful CR42 (and no doubtt get a swift taste of hte English channel.

I used to love F-19 Stealth Fighter on the Spectrum. Yeah it had wire frame grpahics and ran at 3fps but I loved flying low & stealthy, marking a course round all the Ruskie radars. If you got shot down it had a picture of you on the front cover of Pravda http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-oops.gif

Before that I loved Gunship, racking up huge numbers of tank kills, promotions & medals http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/bigthumb.gif

I've been looking into getting a flight sim recently. Any suggestions would be appreciated, also any joystick suggestion would help as well.

FesterShinetop

Well, it depends of course what you are looking for... a combat sim or civil sim?
For a civilian flight sim there is only one choice; FLight Simulator 2004
For combat sims... if you want props you should go for IL2 Forgotten Battles (+Aces expansion). If you prefer the modern day fighters best choice would be Lock On.

Be warned though, your system is gonna have a hard time running all the above mentioned games http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/flat.gif

Edit: Also for a joystick... very much depends, choices range from $30 - $450...

Hmm, yeah. Lomac is the best choice then I guess... but it is also the most demanding game With your specs (btw Sjak they are in his 1st post) I think you would have to run the game at 800X600 with most (if not all) details set to minimum. And even then it is probably gonna struggle if a lot of action is going on on screen
It will run I think but at minimum settings Still looks pretty good though, even at low settings
There is a demo out BTW so you might wanna test it first

mercian, I would suggest another game with these specs. Lomac demands a 3 ghz, 1 gig ram, 9800 xt vid card to run properly (high settings / good fps) but to date no PC exists with suffcient hardware so lomac can run with maxed out settings...

But Apache is right, you CAN run it, but at low details and poor fps even. Go ahed and try the demo and if you like the game it doesnt matter if the ground looks good or not :) you can still fire you missiles.

but maybe you should try some other modern aircraft games?

Or get a new pc http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-2thumbsup.gif

Flight sims...

On the Amiga:

Red Baron
Wings over Europe
Gunship

I moved on to PC's because I couldn't get Aces of the Pacific for the amiga...

I got seriously addicted to F15 Strike Eagle 3... that whole down below the RADAR sneak in stuff, infiltration/exfiltration, coupled with LAN play:
Umm... thats you flying over that river isn't it?
Yep http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/bigthumb.gif

My interest in flight sims is waning these days, my old Thrustmaster setup isn't compatible with ATX Mboards, the homemade rudder pedals don't work either... and flying dawn patrol in winter with a fan blowing cold air into my face, with blue hands on the stick, just doesn't appeal anymore.

and I am yet to discover a flightsim that grabs me like F15 strike eagle 3 did. I keep looking though...
