The Middle Earth: Total War News, 6th October, 2003
The last month we had some difficulties at the forums with guiding our devoted members. This is being sorted now, and several areas are progressing again.

Campaignmap
As you have already seen on page 4 (http://helper.metw.net/images/campmap-sample-misty-sm.jpg), we finally have the campaignmap, thanks to Knight of Ni. This is at the moment being edited at a very high standard by LOTR-Helper. The map will contain almost all of Middle Earth, ranging from the Grey Havens to beyond the blackened wastelands of Mordor.

We are planning to add faction specific castle-pieces for each of the factions; you will see Barad-Dur, Orthanc, Minas Tirith and others in all their glory and evilness on the campaignmap. However, it has to be researched in what measures this can be achieved on the battlemaps.

Unitgraphics
The team has been strengthened by a 3D artist, called Ancalagon the Black, that has made numerous 3D airplanes for WW games. Ancalagon will start working on making the Gondor units and then the Easterlings and Haradrim. Duke John has started on the Orcs and the fearsome Troll, watch for screenshots in the coming week Meanwhile PYJ99 is responsible for the correct placement of weapons and shields that you see on the battlefield.

Playtesting
An organised team of playtesters has been setup to balance the different units and while the excel sheets seem incomprehensible, their approach is working.

1. This BETA is an historical battle between Rohan and Isengard (featured in Tolkien's Unfinished Tales): The Battle of the Fords of Isen.

2. It is compatible with MTW v.1.1.

3. Other factions and troops will be added in order to complete the campaign mod. Currently there are fewer than 10 people actively working to produce this mod, so it may take some time to complete. We are just starting playtesting of the units and working on the battle map.

For the campaign, there will need to be a campaign map as well of course.

It will be done when it's done. When that is depends in part upon how much help we get and what problems emerge between now and then. This isn't going to be easy you know

I'll be assisting with the new campaign map after LMM5 is released. At present my understanding is that the first 1 or 2 releases of METW will concetrate on historical battles and campaigns.

This is good because it gives the team time to concentrate on the campaign map aspects whilst METW releases are still ongoing.

I must say, this looks like its going to be the very best mod ever made, that I've seen anyway. This is making me salivate even more than RTW, being the LOTR freak that I am. The only thing I want to know is if you need any kind of Middle-Earth, LOTR fanatical scholar-guy to help you in figuring out unit types or descriptions, or where to make the province boundaries and such. I also know a fantastic site thats an LOTR/Middle Earth history/Everything Tolkien encyclopedia that doesnt have one thing that is missing from it. I don't want to be critical, but it seems the Uruk Hai are slightly, slightly mind you, overpowered. They are about as strong as a man, but are not trained at all. They are born, and given a cheap and mass produced sword, as well as heavy, but mderately effective armor. Like I said they are not trained except for how to handle a weapon, so they should probably not be disciplned, nor should they probaby have weapons whic require it, such as a pike. I don't remember reading about orcish pikemen. The Uruk Hai should be thought of as having about twice the armor of other orcs (nothing to boast about, really) and maybe slightly stronger than a man, withou discipline or a lot of training. They dont really need pikes, the wargs shoul be their anti-horse, because they slash at their bellies and such. I must also say that Saruman's army should comprise of more types of orc than just Uruk-Hai. There shoul be contingents of smller goblins as well. The Uruk-Hai were reatively new, and could not really be produced en masse until near th battle of the Hornburg, which i why Saruman threw all of them at it. There were not enough to leave behind for defense. That said, I want to say I'm very sorry if I'm beng annoying or redundant. I respect greatly the enormous endeavor you are undertaking, and only wish to contribute to it. Thank you for making this, and for your time.

I wonder about the elves. I'm not that into LOTR, but i've read a few things. I mean, like the forest elves and the archery. I'd think it would be so cool.

Emp. Conralius
08-29-2003, 03:24
All Elvish archer units will have exceptional skills. We added the Uruk-Hai Pikemen to bring in some variety as well as an anti-cav unit for Isengard. This was essential due to the game mechanics of MTW, and, Isengard will be facing Rohan most of the time.

The Warg Rider unit was meant to resemble Mounted Sergeants as far as units go, and the Warg ARchers will pretty much play like Horse Archers. They will have a "cause fear to horses" bonus though; similar to the camel units of MTW.

In the mod, our representation of the Uruk-Hai is giving them, for the most part, descent armor, attack, defence, and morale varying from unit to unit. For example, Uruks of the White Hand will excell in attack, whereas Pike Uruk-Hai will defend much better.

The mod and the hard-working people making the mod ARE trying to keep the mod as close to the Middle Earth from the literature as much as possible, but understandibly, this in some cases can be impracticle. So please, bear with us.

Quite a few questions that I will try to answer:

What other races do we have in mind?
At the moment we have the Rohirrim, Isengard, Gondor, Mordor, Elves, Dwarves (in alliance with men probably) and a Goblin (or minor Orcs) faction.

Uruk-Hai
We have a very knowledgeable teammember that I trust and he says that the Uruk-Hai did indeed use pikes. Also I think it fits the "technology" theme of Isengard. Remember that we're making a game here and if we strictly adhere to the books of Tolkien we will probably get boring armies with 3 or 4 choices.
Stats of the Uruk-Hai can always be altered after play-testing.

Isengard should get Orcs as a troopchoice...
This might be an option but it takes time to make new units so please bear with me. At the moment Isengard has Wildmen as a cheap expendable trooptype.

Campaignmap
At the moment we're finishing the units of Isengard and Rohan. That's where we are, questions about campaignmap or other races cannot be answered since these are still in early development.

When can we download the first release?
Just one answer, when it's done. We've decided to leave out some extras such as the historical battles. These will downloadable at a later stage. This means that the release will be sooner, I guess in somewhere in the coming two weeks.

Cheers, Duke John

I'm guessing that Gondor will be a silvery white, just enough to distinguish it from Isengard on the map.

Duke John
08-30-2003, 20:41
My thoughts on the colours were: this releases focuses solely on Isengard and Rohan. In the books Isengard is white on black. It's true that Mordor and Gondor also have a black background but since both are not in the first release then why restrict ourselves. Besides in VI it's possible to make your own faction colours.

The first post contained too many pictures, so I had to move the Faction section to this place. Each faction will get his own post.

http://chronicles.metw.net/website/factions/rohan/images/icon_flag.jpg  http://chronicles.metw.net/files/forum/title_rohan.gif
Rohan's history was one of conflict and war; with the Orcs of the White Mountains, the Dunlendings to the west, and ultimately with Saruman in Orthanc, whose lands bordered Rohan to the north.

Units

http://chronicles.metw.net/images/icons/unit_icon_rohanroyalguard.gifRohan Royal Guard
Only the strongest of the Rohirrim are fit to serve as the King's personal bodyguard. Trained from infancy, the Royal Guard are supremely disciplined and loyal. Armed with heavy lances and large shields, they are adept at riding down opponents with thier lances.

http://chronicles.metw.net/images/icons/unit_icon_rohanhorselords.gifHorse Lords
Having mastered the art of mounted combat, the Horse Lords of Rohan are a formidable medium cavalry force that can be used for many tasks on the field. Well armed and armoured, the Horse Lords are proficient at cutting through armoured opponents, thanks to the axes they wield.

http://chronicles.metw.net/images/icons/unit_icon_rohanriders.gifRiders of Rohan
Though more lightly armoured compared to the other levies of the Rohirrim, the Riders of Rohan are amed with heavy spears and broad shields. Though they can give a good account for themselves in melee, they shouldn't be commited to a prolonged fight. Possesing great speed, the Riders of Rohan can easily run down any routing foe, or if need be, evade pursuit.

http://chronicles.metw.net/images/icons/unit_icon_rohanhorsearchers.gifRohirrim Horse Archers
The horse archer of Rohan stress speed and manueverability over dedicating themselves into melee. Unlike the other cavalry of the Rohan, Rohirrim cavalry archers are swift and excel in disrupting enemy formations and harrasing them with arrow fire.

http://chronicles.metw.net/images/icons/unit_icon_rohanmountedjavelineers.gifRohan Mounted Javelineers
Swift and lighty armoured, the Mounted Javelineers are an affective and inexpensive addition to the armies of the Rohirrim. On the field of battle, they serve as quick, mounted skirmishers. Armed with javelins and light lances, the Rohan Mounted Javelineers often harass the enemy with missile fire, and then pull back for the charge.

http://chronicles.metw.net/images/icons/unit_icon_rohanmountedfyrdmen.gifRohirrim Mounted Fyrdmen
During times of war hosts of non-professional warriors, called Fyrds, may also be called into service. The Fyrds consist mainly of men past their prime, young men not ready to become Riders, and meaner folk otherwise unable to serve in the King's Host. However, due to the ample amount of mounted and trained Riders, the fyrd would be rarely needed.

If Orcs are the foulest creatures to walk Middle-earth then Uruk-Hai are the most dangerous perversion of the breed. Where ordinary Orcs are crook limbed and timid, the Uruk-Hai are strong, muscular, upright warriors of greater skill and courage. They are no less evil-hearted than their smaller cousins however. Their capacity for evil is greater still.

Units

http://chronicles.metw.net/images/icons/unit_icon_urukhaiswords.gifUruks of the White Hand
These elite warriors are all honored with the badge of the white hand. The fighting Uruk-Hai fear nothing. Unlike their orcish predecessors, and more like their human-blood, the Uruk-Hai stand tall and are unaffected by the sun. They wield broad-bladed swords, are protected by heavy mail and fight in massed formations; and are specialized in close combat, and fighting in wedges. They are well- trained, disciplined, and keep good order even after being tired by battle.

http://chronicles.metw.net/images/icons/unit_icon_urukhaipikes.gifPike Uruk-Hai
The fighting Uruk-Hai are adept to using many weapons on the field of battle. The pike is one of them. Over 4 meters in height, the pike stands as an excellent defensive weapon. Uruk-Hai Pikemen, like most other Uruk-Hai, are excectionally well trained. Donning armour forged from the fires of Isengard, the Uruk-Hai Pikemen excell in defence.

http://chronicles.metw.net/images/icons/unit_icon_urukhaicrossbows.gifCrossbow Uruk-Hai
The crossbow is another deadly weapon employed by the minions of the cunning Saruman. The penetrating ability of the bolts means that the Uruk-Hai should also be feared from afar.

http://chronicles.metw.net/images/icons/unit_icon_urukhaiberserkers.gifUruk-Hai Berserkers
The most feared of the mighty Uruk-Hai are the fierce Berserkers. Before battle, it is said human blood is smeared upon their faces to aggitate their lust for blood. In combat, they wield large, two-handed swords- that are nearly taller than they are They wear no armour, except helmets which bear the marking of the White Hand.

Wildmen of Dunland
The Dunlendings were ancient inhabitants of Rohan. Driven off by Gondor and the Rohirrim hundreds of hears ago, the Dunlendings are once again enticed to war through the council of Saruman.

Dunlending Axemen

http://chronicles.metw.net/images/icons/unit_icon_wargriders.gifWarg Rider
Wargs are an intelligent and large race of wolf. Under the service of Saruman, they eagerly join battle with orcs mounted on their backs. Agile and very fast, the Warg Riders act as scouts as well as a capable cavalry for the armies of Isengard. The very sight of a ferocious Warg causes fear and discontent within the ranks of opposing armies, especially horses, and the savage jaws and axes of the onset of the charge of Warg Riders is devestating.

http://chronicles.metw.net/images/icons/unit_icon_wargarchers.gifWarg Archers
The speed of the great Wargs is a valuable asset to the forces of Isengard. Able to span great distances in little time, Warg Archers can pepper enemy formations with arrow fire before pulling back. Though capable of melee due to the fanged ferocity of the Warg, their tactics are often as skirmishing and harrassing troops.

Installation notes
The Unit Beta v0.1 release is now ready for download here (http://chronicles.metw.net/files/METW_BETA_01.zip). (6.4mb)
Note that this is for Medieval: Total War version 1.1 only To install do the following:
- extract the zip file into a temporary directory
- then copy the entire content of that directory over a clean installation of M:TW 1.1, overwrite everything.

Playing Middle Earth: Total War
After installation, set up a custom battle using the new "Middle Earth: Third Age" period and select either the Rohan or Isengard faction. This release features the Rohan and Isengard units that are listed in the above posts.

Work in progress...
Please note that this is only a beta release and is still only a work in progress. If after playing this mod you have the urge to help us recreate Middle Earth then feel free to drop by at our forums (http://www.leftzed.com/lotr/index.php).

Further releases
A map pack of Middle Earth maps, set in the homelands of both Rohan and Isengard will be released in the near future.

Finally, if you can provide a mirror for this, or any other releases we have, please let us know.

Tolkien Estate License
This mod is not officially approved by the Tolkien Estate or Tolkien Enterprises. We are now creating something that has been wanted by this community for some time.
One of the things I must stress, however, is that the project as a whole does not intend to benefit in any way, be it through money or superfluous fame.
The Middle-Earth mod for Total war is based in the same world and setting, but does not follow the storyline as written in the Lord of the Rings. All the content of Middle-Earth: Total War, be it graphical or textual, is fan-created. The Lord of the Rings movies, while inspiring, are not being used as a resource for this mod, no filming footage is being used.

Are you sure that you installed over Medieval: Total War with the patch 1.1 installed? This mod doesn't work with VI, and I don't think you did, since that would give other errors.

If you copied anything wrong or some files were missing then the game would crash, this is something I've never seen before.Other people have no problem with the mod, so I can only suggest to re-install MTW 1.1 and then the mod.

I suggest you follow the installation notes by the letter. First make a temporary directory, you should get a file-structure similar to that of M:TW;
\Battles\
\campmap\
\loc\
\Frontend_files\
\Textures\
and two text files
Copy these files into the M:TW folder.

If you do anything different then I can't say exactly did wrong, so just follow the instructions  http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Great job http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

few comments:

1) Colours are too dark. This is OK for the orcs but Rohirrims should be brighter. It is very difficult to tell the units apart.

2) Base morale is too low for low florin battles (5k). Visit the jousting fields esp. the "5k florin battles suck" thread (I know CBR was just kidding with the title, but IMHO they do suck http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif). I would increase the base morale of all troops at least with +2 and that would be fine for a 5k game.
On the other hand, if you play 15k then you get all kind of problems with upgrading ranged units. For example, a v4 warg archer is better than a warg rider of comparable cost (v2w1). A v4 Rohirrim horse archer is better than Rider of rohan (v2) or even than a Royal Guard (v0w1) of comparable cost Finnaly, a v4w1 Rohirrim archer is better than a Rohirrim axemen (v2) of comparable cost.

3) Warg riders look cool but IMHO they are a bit weak. I guess you want to make Isengard an infantry heavy faction, this is fine, and they have the units for this, but still warg riders could be a bit stronger. At least 2 2 2 2 instead of the current 1 1 2 2.

keep up the good work http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

One Word: Amazing

This mod is incredible No doubt about it I agree, the colors of the Rohirrim are a bit dark though. Besides that, this mod really gives you the feel of Middle Earth.

First, thank you all for your praises. As we don't get paid for our efforts, your appreciation is the only reward we get.  http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/pat.gif

Secondly some answers:
1. I like dark colours, I think it adds more realism. And I used the movie as reference for how dark the clothing would be. Just play a little longer and you'll get used it, if you don't than bummer, it's my artistic freedom  http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

2. The stats still need to be playtested. I thought the morale was pretty good. It just depends which kind of battles you like. I think it's irrealistic if combats continue even if half of the unit is dead. I've played quite a few a battles and it's ok to me.
I know that the costs are wrong. I didn't think too much about them. Again it's still a beta and either we could hold it longer or we could release it. At the moment Cugel is playtesting this and with the help of your results we will make it more balanced.

3. The Warg Riders were stronger, but since they cause fear to horses making them stronger would make them far too invincible. They could crush any cavalry unit if the stats were better. Just see the Warg Riders as an anti-cavalry unit. And Isengard needs one since it's doesn't have that many anti-cavalry infantry.
Because of their speed they're also good for mopping up routing units. Use them as reserves not as front line attackers.

Thanks, Duke John

Just some small nitpicks:

1)When the Horselords unit (a personal favorite) charge, you can't see their axes. The same case is with the Dunlanding units and Uruk-Hai Berserkers (in there case, no weapons at all).

2) The Rohirrim Axemen seem too weak. At valour lv 4 and weapon lv 3, they were unable to defeat Uruk-Hai Warriors with lesser bonuses.

3) Will the whole dead bodies problem be fixed? It's kinda dissapointing to see a warg or full-armored uruk-hai be killed only to have the corpse of an HRE grunt appear in its stead.

Once again these are only observations. I understand that this is only the very first release of the mod. So please, dont hold it against me http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif

[Edited 9-8] My comment about the lack of weapons and graphics anomalies referred to an earlier (not released) version of the BETA that DJ sent me for playtesting. I hadn't realized for some reason that DJ had fixed all the bugs in the new release and I just hadn't installed it yet DJ sent me a note and I then installed the units. The units now look simply amazing and there are no bugs that I can tell. My mistake.

We are just starting serious playtesting of this release and would appreciate your comments See our developers forum at: http://leftzed.com/lotr/viewtopic.php?t=197. You should post here though.

The more insight people provide, the better our result will be. If you want to comment please do so in the below format so we can calibrate results:

1. All results posted should provide combat results in the form: Test 1: 128-68 W; Test 2: 89-87 (L) or (W), etc. If you don't give us the raw numbers it's really hard to evaluate your results. We are trying to get an overall idea whether to make certain units stronger or weaker, etc. We need HARD data to do this from as many people as we can get.

2. In addition, please state how many units were engaged, which side is the player's and what valor levels, etc. E.G.: 2 V0 Uruk-Hai Pike (player) v. 2 V0 Rohan Royal Guard. Terrain neutral: Test 1: 128-68 W; Test 2: 89-87 L, etc. (not a real test).

3. If you use tactics other than straight ahead, let us know, since this can affect the result.

Thanks for your help.

If you like the results of the first BETA, wait till you see the full campaign
http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif

BTW: The mod is being designed for the SP campaign game, so we don't want to increase base values too much. The reason for this is that there will be many high valor generals. The values would be too high.

I had no graphics problems, neither with the footguards nor with the riders of rohan. Both looked good, warg riders too http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Another observation: cannot change faction colour. Is this intentional feature or you want to change it later? If it remains this way, this would imply that only 1 person can pick rohirims in MP and there have to be 4 different factions on each side to play a 4v4 battle http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/eek.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

few more comments about factions and unit types http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

First of all, I would not be afraid making a little bit one sided armies. This would be kind of “historically” accurate and would make the game more fun. If all factions have all unit types then what is the difference between playing middle earth and lets say viking era?

Rohirrims: I would take away the cav archers (they have a crappy morale anyway http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif) and would give shortbows to the Riders of Rohan. Yes, this would make them a strong multi purpose unit, but they were strong and adaptable http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif I would even give them the option to dismount before battle, this would give them a +1 att and +1 def increase (of course, it would be useful only in SP).

Isengard: As I said before warg riders should be just a little bit stronger. Perhaps a warg guard unit (20 strong) could be added with the following stats: 3 5 4 4 costing 400.

Elfs: Not surprisingly I would make them a ranged heavy faction. They can have 5 or 6 (or even more) hybrid archer unit types (like “common” elfs, forest elfs, elven guards, etc.), that is, skilled archers, but also decent hand-to-hand fighters. They can have a few skirmishing archer unit types (i.e. cheap but weak HTH), also only a few melee unit types, like 1 basic spearmen and 1 “elven naginata” which can hold for long but kills slowly. They can be weak on cavs too, perhaps only two types, one royal guard (this should be very very good http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif ) and one light cavalry.

Dwarfs: I would make them a separate faction both because of SP and MP reasons. They should be an infantry only faction. I would give them 5 or 6 different types of axemen: common dwarfs, dwarf guards, “naginata” dwarfs (excellent defense but weak attack), berserker dwarfs http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif, some lightly armoured “fast” dwarfs, and finally axe throwing dwarfs (they should be a decent HTH fighters too) http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Gondor: IMHO Gondor should be the only faction which has a full range of unit types at its disposal. Light infantry, heavy infantry, spearmen, pikemen, various archers, light cavalry, heavy cavalry etc.

Mordor: It should be an infantry heavy faction like Isengard, of course spiced up with some trolls and alike http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif They should have the southeners too at their disposal with war elephants, etc. Last but not least they should have the nazguls, though I wonder how can you implement them. Perhaps some “uber” cavalry unit, 1 man strong, with stats like 10 10 10 10 (or even higher)?

I just cannot wait for the campaign http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Also, I would be glad to help to make battlemaps and set up "historical" battles.

About Units weapons&shields in METWBetav01:

The post from CUGEL in the METW thread in the dungeon is incorrect.

In the version released all units have Weapons & Shields positionned... Except the followings:

Dunland Axemen & Wildmen
Warg riders & archers
Berserkers

So for most units it is weapon fighting & not wrestling

DUKE John's post earlier in this thread is correct.

regards,

PS: Sorry to insist on them but this important for would-be users of the mod to know that graphics are nearly complete. Moreover, I did the Weapon positionning & it was hard work

PPS: could an administrator move this message to the METW mod thread in the dungeon, please.

This will probably be corrected in time but there are a few problems with generating DeadPage images for entirely new units.

1st roblem is the Deadpage is only 256x256 and hence cannot cater for all current BIFs (there are 34 BIFs in MTW but the DeadPage only has images for 4 mounts and 17 Figures - hence there is already a lot of doubling-up)

2nd problem is the Palette. As the DeadPage is a 256-colour palette, any new images with entirely different colours will require a new palette that caters (as best as possible) for the range of colours contained in the new BIFs

3rd problem is that, obviously from the above, you canonly build a DeadPage when ALL BIFs have been completed - and as they hav'nt yet - no DeadPage yet.

4rd problem is when ME:TW goes to VI - inwhich case we have 10 more BIFs (44 in total) but only enough space in the DeadPage for a maximum of 21 BIFs.

What is really required is a 512x512 DeadPage (and ideally true colour) but I doubt whether this will be incorporated in the VI patch.

Giving a melee unit a bow and ammo causes problems for the AI, since the AI behavior routine defaults to skirmish The "strong" unit now runs away from it's foes instead of attacking as it should. This was a problem with pilum/javelin wielding infantry in the Patrician mod. Allowing the unit to dismount also doesn't help the AI since it never does this.

In any case, we like Rohan mounted archers They are mentioned in the Two Towers and are quite useful (just as they are in MTW) if handled properly. Altogether one of my more favorite units.

I have no problems with horse archers, to the contrary. I did not know that the rohirrims had pure horse archers, if so it is fine with me. But at least give them a decent morale.

DJ, are you going to make a medium-infantry Uruk-Hai unit for Isengard. It would wield the broadsword of the Uruks of WH but it would have a bow as well. Im imagining it would look like that Uruk-Hai captain who killed Boromir in The fellowship film (White hand on face, no helmet, long hair.) Is that gonna happen?

How will the men of Gondor appear? What faction banner colors? Will they look of Peter Jackson's interpretation of Gondorian men?

What of Mordor? Will their orcs be hunched and bow-legged like the first version of your uruk-hai model?

I know you have more work to do on Rohan and Isengard, but can you give us ANY new info on the Elven, Dwarven, Gondor and Mordor factions?

And lastly, what siege weapons will be implemented?

Downloaded the Beta yesterday and had a run through last night.

My first comment is that this is a staggering piece of work. The units on the whole look excellent - noticably better than the MTW originals, IMHO.

I am with DJ on the unit colours - the darker tones give a much more "realistic" feel to the battle maps.

The only issues that I spotted in this first (admitedly brief) run through were:

The Warg rider sprites seemed to show some odd behaviour when I got close to them. Sometimes they appeared to be rotated through 90 degrees and standing on their tails (this was on a slope, as I recall). Also there appeared to be occasional fragments of the images appearing at the edges of a rectangular boundary around the individual sprites. - I think this was at its most pronounced when at a low angle, looking through layered sprites. - I only saw this on the Warg Riders.

The second issue was frame rates - the battles themselves were very choppy and slow. Historically, I have had some trouble with this in MTW, but have not seen it for some time and do not see it in my current (separately installed V2) campaign.

My final comment is that I appreciate that you cannot claim any financial reward for this work. All I can say is that that is a shame. From what I have seen so far, I would be more than happy to pay full price for the final product.

If I can help support this project in any way, I will.

Im imagining it would look like that Uruk-Hai captain who killed Boromir in The fellowship film (White hand on face, no helmet, long hair.) Maybe a name would be Fighting Uruk-Hai, Uruk-Hai Stalkers, Uruk-Hai Scouts? They should have smaller armour than Uruks of the WH or Pike Uruks. What do you think? A medium infantry unit would be good for Isengard. No?

How will the men of Gondor appear? What faction banner colors? Will they look of Peter Jackson's interpretation of Gondorian men?

To my knowledge, these are the following faction "specialities"

Mordor-Their troops will have larger number than normal units, i believe either their support costs will be low too to compensate for most of their units poor fighting skill, Ring Wraiths will be extremely powerful.

Gondor-Units will be like knights I believe, the black I am guessing is a silver with a white tree on, I think thats it.

Elves-No mounted units, that was correct and yes, exceptional archers, I believe there is going to be hand to hand fighting units also.

Marshal Murat
09-14-2003, 01:00
Mordor: Units are cheap, and mass produced.  Ringwraiths are sort of like Royal Bodyguards.  Also men armies, of like phalanxs and those men with Elephants.
Gondor:Silver tree with leaves and green background.  Exceptional knights, and foot warriors. Mostly foot warriors. Clad in Black armor and Spanish Morian helments (conquistador helment)
Elves:Small units (elves don't reproduce quickly) with superior weapons/tactics.  Armed falx like weapons and longbows. In exchange for calvary, they are have Quick footed Elves.  These are like Legolas. Also some elves are able to see enemy in the woods.

Emp. Conralius
09-14-2003, 06:16
If I remember correctly, it was shaping up like this:

Gondor: Should have a White Tree w/ a black or possibly gray background(since Isengard has a black background; Rohan has a green banner). Large variety of units; excellent heavy cav (Dunedain Knights, Knights of DA) good infantry, good archers, excellent heavy infantry
Mordor: huge masses of orc rabble, evil men (Southrons, Haradrim, Easterlings, Khands, variags...) trolls, Nazgul
Elves: best infantry in ME Fearless infantry and ranged troops. best archers, there has been talk of small units of Elven cav
Dwarves: exceptional infantry, human units, crossbows

Marshal Murat
09-14-2003, 13:27
Isenguard has the crossbows. Also for RTW you need to add siege towers and such
Dwarves:Armed with axes, good in hand to hand, lack suffeceint calvary and archers. Heavily clad in armor
Banner:Unknown
Elves:As before, with light calvary archers, calvary falx men.
Banner:Leaf, ummm can't think of anything else
Gondor:Foot infantry, calvary, heavy calvary, archers, heavy infantry due to the caste of heavy calvary taken by Rohan.
Banner:A silver tree in a black/brown/green/grey background
Mordor:Men warriors. Also we need a dark cloud to follow the Orcs, Trolls, and such due to the weakness or death of the creatures. Rabble of other units. Nazgul bodyguard.
Banner:Unknown

Dwarves will have crossbows as well. Both Isengard and Dwarves get them. Rohan would have a green banner. Gondor would have the white tree on a dark banner (black, grey, possibly blue). Mordor's banner would probably have the Lidless Eye of Sauron on it. The banner I believe is either English red or Polish Red.

The dwarves will have some human units. I cant imagine what their banner could be. Not sure of what color for the elves, maybe blue. The Gilgalad banner may work nicely. It is blue with silvery white stars. The elves units consist of the greatest warriors in middle earth. They are fearless and should be able to cut through even the strongest Uruk-Hai with ease. In exchange for this, their units are small in number, and I believe their build times are longer. Their archers are the BEST, needless to say; and have a much longer range than any other race (we're talking Longbow range).

I'm really excited to see how the Nazgul turn out. DJ said he wanted to create a nazgul unit on a fell beast (flying dragon thing). Wonder how that is going to turn out. From what I've read, the Nazgul will be spread out across Mordor's starting lands.

If you want to join the playbalance team just go to the forum and submit a request. One of the team leaders will then authorize you to be in. Simple as that. We could use more playtesters. Especially we are interested in experienced MP players to give us feedback after playing with the units. What units did you use and why? Are there pricing problems? Are there units you felt were unbalanced, etc. I'm not talking about theoretical opinions: "Rohan Royal Guards should be more like lancers because of what I saw in the movie." Etc. What I'm talking about is what you observed playing the units.

If people have issues with playbalance they should post them.

BTW: It's gonna be tough to conquer the world as the Dwarves There just aren't that many of them and they don't reproduce that fast. They are going to be TOUGH buggers though, best armor and toughest infantry in Middle Earth. But you won't want to get them caught out in the open by heavy cavalry (they're quite short after all).

Its sort of freaky because with NTW I couldn't do that and with this one i could. Is this a glitch or am I making a breakthough hehehehehehe.

The playtesters have finnished all the tests (and believe me there was a LOT of testing) for Isengard vs Rohan. They developed an ingenious system based on spreadsheet value tables. We hope its going to be very balanced because of this.

DJ is going to start working on the Gondorian and Mordor troop Bifs next. The army rosters are beeing finalised now.

The background team is beginning to write the appropiate descriptions now.

The front-end files will be completely modded soon enough.

(again, screenshots will be provided of everything as soon as we feel a preview is ready:) )

Guys, the fell beast isn't going to breath fire (or fart it out of its ass either) In fact, we're making the Nazgul very strong defensively, but definitely NOT a killing machine There will probably be NO Gandalf unit, so having a Nazgul super-hero would unbalance things. The main reason why the Nazguls are included at all is that they were Mordor's best generals. They will influence the battle by giving strong morale bonuses to their troops (V & V Excellent Leader) and general 8-9 stars - not by mowing down legions of enemies.

This is a wargame mod, so none of the heros are included: No Gimli, No Legolas, No Sauron, No Saruman, No Gandalf, No Aragorn units. (We didn't want Sauron taking the field for instance, since he never did if he could help it). There's also no Balrog unit either (same problem - people would want to use it as a super-tank to conquer middle earth). The mod is not based on the movie and while set in Tolkien's universe it won't be possible to replay the history of the war of the ring exactly either.

That said, it should be extremely fun just for what it is - a Middle Earth mod set in the late 3rd age.

LOTR-Helper
11-03-2003, 17:22
This is LOTR-Helper. I am doing all those mountains (and rivers and coasts) on the campaign map, and I work on the background team.

Here's why we cannot give you a date or a schedule:

-None of us are getting paid a dime.
-All of us are doing this on the side from "Real Life".
-Some of us still go out and have a few (or more) beers and socialize.
-We are all committed to excellence and quality.
-We are doing everything as faithful to Middle Earth as humanly possible.
-We are striving to have this be fun *and* enchanting.
-We must make things work well in the MTW engine.
-We have to debate, decide and develop many solutions/problems and confusions (that only a person doing a complete conversion would understand).

This will take a long time. It will be done before Rome TW comes out, but you will not have a full version of our METW mod for Christmas... unless Santa loans us all his little elves, although I would personally much prefer a few vixen (nudge nudge wink wink). So, we can't be more specific than this schedule.
WHEN IT GETS DONE, IT WILL BE DONE.

HOW CAN I HELP?
If you are talented or willing to work hard and have lots of time and enthusiasm, join our Forums (http://www.metw.net/forum) and post something that we can look at. If we like it, we will ask you to join, and then dump work on you, or ignore you and expect you to pull yourself up by your bootstraps Some examples you can run with:

-Make a complete set of units descriptions and stats for one faction (like the elves or dwarves or Gondor, etc.)
-Make a complete tech-tree for one faction's building/technologies.
-Make a graphic for a unit BIF
-Make pencil sketches of units/structures used on info parchments.
-Write a set of virtues and vices, Middle-Earth style.
-Read the OLD BOARDS (http://www.lefzed.com/lotr)and find a problem or issue and solve it.
-Do some “colour” graphics for the in-game menus, portraits, or titles, etc.
-Say something particularly clever and witty.
-Flatter us shamelessly.

BUT I AM UNTALENTED AND LAZY, I CANNOT DO IT
OK I admit that I am too. In fact I can barely type this next sentence. Now that we had that sharing moment, and you are under my charismatic powers: recruit a friend who has talent. Even lazy or untalented people have friends. We need artists to do all kinds of tasks. The artist need only love Tolkien and be *talented*, and work within the artistic style we have developed so far, no gaming/programming/nerdiness required.

You can also post constructive and thoughtful compliments and criticism here, or at the forums as well as encouragement Remember this mod will NOT get done if even one key team member quits. Patrician died. King David got discouraged (at least I think) because some people savaged his mod (at least KD said they did in a post he wrote right before disappearing). After that, no more Patrician. KD Where are you? You coy Spaniard. Seriously, "Real Life", Exhaustion, Stress, Tragedy, and generally feeling completely unappreciated inhibit 90% of all geniuses from developing their genius. Yes, there were at least another 9 more Einsteins out there who all vanished into history like so many little Hiroshimas and Nagasakis. "If only little Timmy had had nicer friends, we could have had hand-held disintegration rays today." Uhh, on further reflection, perhaps one Einstein was enough.

Disclaimer: No offense intended to Shogun/METW Japanese friends, nor to Germanic Jewish scientists, lazy people, untalented people, sexy women who are often referred to as “vixens” by sexist, wolfish men like me, wolfish men like me (rrrr), the diverse range of people who queerly refer to themselves as elves or fairies, people who hate Christmas, Santa, and especially no offense to King David, I love you man, Patrician was the S#*%.

Any news of Gondor and Mordor?

Will siege weapons be included? I just finished a custom battle with Isengard against Rohan on LOTR-Helper's Helm's Deep map; and taking a citadel of that size would take a HUGE number of troops to take it just by storming the gates.

When are you guys gonna post Gondor and Mordor's unit tech tree? If it isn't done, what units do you guys have in mind?

The only siege weapons I know of is the battering ram, but they may not use its

ME:TW - Team
11-11-2003, 16:16
Siege weapons
Battering rams and such are at the moment not feasible because they require 2 BIFs and we would much rather use them for more regular troop types.

The factions will get the regular siege weapons, ie ballistas, probably made a bit more usefull, catapults and ,as the most advanced, the mangonels.

Mordor and Gondor
The armylists are still being edited, but we can already say the following:

- There will be 3 types of Mordor Orcs: Snaga (lesser Orcs), Orcs and Uruk-Hai. Each with their own graphics.
- Mordor will be able to field Olog-Hai's; Trolls equipped with large hammers and bucklers.
- In campaign mode there will be the Nine dreadfull Nazgul who greatly improve morale but are poor fighters (and consequently useless for custom battles).

Hi Duke John,

I just wanted to say, keep up the great work. I checked out EA's new Lord of The Rings game and, as usual, it looks like a let-down. You can't play as Sauron or any of his forces, etc....Bigith Deal.

I agree with you. MTW has the perfect engine for this mod. And, it could be the greatest mod ever. As someone else posted, if it takes 6 months, it's worth the wait to me. All the factions seem great. Will there be a goblin faction (Misty Mountains)? Will Sauron be the Papacy (pope)? He keeps coming back. To me, that would be a logical choice.

Lastly, what tools are you using to create the mod? Is there a list or a link for all of the tools? I'd like to try my hand, ever so slightly, at some point. How do you do the skins?

Thanks very much.

Why are the Nazgul poor fighters?

I always got the impression that they were badasses.

_Martyr_
12-02-2003, 11:00
The TW engine does not lend itself well to RPG type situations, where one "uber" unit (or in this case, solitary man) takes on 4000 men. It leads to absolutely terrible gameplay, and simply doesnt work very well. Also, the Nazgul are less of a fighting force in the books and more dread inducing leaders. They will have very high dread and thus be a unit that one does not commit to the front lines, but uses as a driving force behind those cowering snaga haihttp://www.metw.net/forum/images/smiles/icon_twisted.gif http://www.metw.net/forum/images/smiles/icon_twisted.gif

Many of Mordor's units will have low moral, only being effective when under strong leadership and in huge numbers. That is why it will be vital for the player to keep the Nazgul alive, otherwise the massive armies of the Dark One will simply rout. To encourage the player not to attack with a Nazgul, we will give them poor attack.

No man, cant do that. At least not for inclusion in the mod... unfortunately we can touch ANY copyrighted stuff. To the extent that we cant even include the ring into gameplay. If you own the soundtrack yourself, as I do, you can use it for yourself, as I do... But we cant offer a source of illegally shared music. It will get our mod shut down quicker than you can say NewLineCinema. We cany use images, sounds, video... anything from the films. We cant use direct copies of Tolkien's own drawings, we have to get permission for every bit of art we use. Its a bitch, believe me I know, but we know from a legal pov (we have consulted lawyers), we seriously wouldnt last a week if anything was taken from the films. Then we would simply have to close shop, all the work for nothing... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mecry.gif

Make them 2 factions. One high elves and one wood elves.
Why?
Wood Elves were (as said before) Welsh like armies. However, the High Elves fought more like the Byzantines: highly trained but expensive troops, CAVALRY (Remember Glorfindel, Arwen, the sons of Elrond; all on horseback&#33http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif, you know them. I'd say for colors blue and white (or silver).
Only problem is that the territory of both factions is extremely small. For the High Elves north and south Lindon, the grey havens, Rivendell, and maybe some lands in the south of Eriador. For the Wood Elves Lorien, north Mirkwood and an outpost at the end of the great river.

You should state what you said at the dev's site. That is the place to discuss the mod in more depth. Some of the devs rarely come to this thread besides updates.

To answer your question: There will most likely be 1 single Elven faction. Many of the Elvish cultures will be included, for example: the Sindarin, Noldorians (very few), High Elves, and Wood Elves, among others.

Arwen on horseback? Where? When? Ok I give you that she did ride a horse at the end of ROTK, but that was not a warhorse, nor was she in any way dressed for battle, rather marriage.

As for Territories, the Grey Havens lay in Lindon. And the "an outpost at the end of the great river" AKA Edhellond had been abandonded for about a millenia when the books about LOTR takes place, and IIRC this mod is to take place in the era of the books.

Maybe Arwen wasn't riding a warhorse, who cares? It certainly doesn't prove any point, except that elves did have horses. You're pointing out a mistake, but you're not proving my point is wrong, so your statement is kinda unfitting...

Because the elvish territory is so small, the province Mithlond could be added.
I'd disagree that the outpost would be abandonned, but it could be easily left. Not a big issue for me. Still the wood elven territory would be so small, that it would be impossible. And I was trying to justify putting in 2 separate elf factions... For example CA and WesW aren't always following exact historical facts, sometimes you've got to think of gaming balance as well.

Remember, I know the books good too, so you may want to try to realise what I am meaning, instead of just pointing out any "mistakes" in my message. Maybe I haven't been clear enough before, I hope this post enlightens you.

They could atleast be added as archers with good armour only trainable in the Shire.

Small and hard to hit = lesser kills by bowfire = also possible with alot of armour.
AP is often made by big weapons = the hobbits are easily killed by big weapons
Tires fast in desert = Uhh, they are hairy http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif
Tires fast in blizzards = Uhh, they don't like blizzards http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/idea.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif

But I want hobbits in, atleast as region specific troops. But I admit they won't work as a faction.

Yes, I believe you can. Just re-install M:TW to another directory. That should do it. If not, you can try uninstalling, reinstalling, making a copy of M:TW v1.1, then installing Vikings on one of the copies, but I don't know if that would work, although I seem to remember doing something like that so I could have a M:TW and Patrician mod both installed at the same time...

METW for VIKING
I managed to mod the game a little to get the Factions into Viking
Just download the most recent troop mod and all. Then with the troop thing, rename it METW_UNIT_PROD_11 and then play. Its got quite a few bugs and it's not perfect, but you could just expand on this and all and work out the bugs. Just a thing I did. Also just back up the files for it. It may not help but it worked for me. Its got serious bugs but i'm sure you can work it out.

I really couldn't tell you, but I seriously doubt it. Basically, the guy who makes the BIFs, Duke John, pretty much holds sway over what happens in the unit department. And sense we only have a few BIFs files to work with, a hobbit unit probably won't be in.

But this could change do to the fact that we have more BIFs since the finished mod will be for the VI. SO keep your fingers crossed, or just as Duke John directly.

Wow, all this looks fantastic, I can't wait to play it. Anyone have a rough idea of when this is going to be finished?

Oh, and I saw some teasers of the Middle-Earth map earlier in the thread - does anyone know what it was put together with?

LOTR-Helper
01-06-2004, 20:09
Thanks for the compliments to the METW team.

The map teasers you saw were done by hand in Photoshop using 100's of layers to enable easy shiftings and manipulations of every feature of the "world". As well, about every "straight" PS technique (transparencies, masks, lighting and coloring) we used to make it all look and fit together.

I started with about 200 "panorama map" images as a foundation or "quarry" to build the geographic features. I then clothed the bare rocks with my texture library (foresty greens, mossy browns, rocky plains, sandy deserts, wavy beaches, etc).

All of these starting images were taken from personal photos or photos and paintings online, then cut apart or clone-stamped (in PS) into the relevant M.E. terrain.

I strictly followed the proportions and topography from the maps drawn and published by Christopher Tolkien to keep as close to JRR's intended geography as possible.

However, do not hold your breath. The map may not look like the teasers AT ALL, in the end. In fact there may be a much simpler MTW-style look instead. We'll see.

Hobbits are 99.99% out. We have 8 factions budgeted, and Hobbits are not one of them. There was discussion, and argumentation, however.

The reason is that some of the team members feel that the tactical power of hobbits would be null in the large-scale battles that MTW is designed to simulate.

All is not lost to the shire;) : YOU could always start practicing your modding now and make a hobbit unit or two. If I were to do this, I would use standard archers and just fiddle with modding the "scale" to about 1/2 of what it is now.

Wouldn't it be more sensible to include Hobbits as a token unit for Gondorians or humans, like 'volunteer archers' or 'spies' or some shit. Just to include the idea on the larger scale? -as a playable faction the idea is ludicrous, of course...

Here's some Q & A from the dev's forum, it answeres the Hobbit question as well as a few others.

Answers:

1. Where are we at this point in the mod (units, camp map)?
Current focus is on: Gondor units & animations, Mordor animations, Campaign map & graphics, tech trees/buildings. Things are going well.

2. Will the Haradrim in fact be an included faction? If so, will Oliphaunts be in?
The Haradrim will almost certainly be the 8th faction. (The game requires 8 major factions, otherwise we would stick to just 7, with the Haradrim as part of Mordor). We hope to have Mûmakil (regardless of whether the Haradrim are their own playable faction), but like with the Nazgûl, it will depend if we can get them to work and balance reasonably.

3. Will the Swan Knights be more powerful than Rohan's Royal Mounted Guard?
Yes (they are 'heavier&#39http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif.

4. Trolls? For the most part, most people know that they will be included, but they just want to know more about them.
Mordor will have Olog-hai. They're big and nasty.

5. Will the Dwarf faction be called Durin's Folk instead of 'Dwarves'?
No.

6. Will Gondor have another cav. unit?
Already answered: No.

7. How are the Orc animations going?
Slowly but surely. You can't rush a good thing.

8. Will Hobbit units be in?
Already answered: No.

9. Will the Uruk-Hai Scouts be in the final release for Isengard?
Already answered: No.

10. What will the Elvish banner look like?
You'll have to wait and see. The Elves will be the last faction to be done.

11. What faction will be done after Mordor?
Already answered: Dwarves.

12. Are Gondor's units done? If so, some screens of Swan Knights and Winged Guards?
No. We will post when we have something substantial to post about.

Small News Flash

DJ and PYJ have created a workable camp. map of middle earth as seen in the screenshots of the early days of development.

Now, the interface isn't completed. SO right now, Dj is working away on units graphics as well as the map inteface; which will eventually be totally Middle Earth. From the unit pieces to the general interface itself. We have a concept artist, Hoggy, working away on the unit images. His Haradrim pieces have been posted all over the dev's forum.

So things are looking up. A lot better than that depression we fell into a few months ago (particularly after the holidays). But still, a final version is months away, so stick with us guys

CRYING CAN'T WAITBAH

I assume that Mordor is an faction for it self, but do they got Uruk Hais?

How will this mod handle evil vs good?

Or will it be all vs all?

Becouse i think maybe somethink is wrong if Gondor was in war with Rohan and such, or Gondor did make ally with mordor... how will the mod handle this?

Sorry that I type fast and some times Words get garbled up however is a shame that all you get from my statement was i cant spell , i was simply trying to show appreciation for the people that are working hard on making this game and other more enjoyable , further more miss spelling some words is hardly a crime and if you feel the need to go around correcting everybody on there spelling and try to promote spell-check maybe you need to consider a career in teaching if you are not all ready one. but this will be my last post no need to compliment any body don't want to pollute your forums with my mis spelling's so take it easy dude

How goes the mod for Middle Earth Total War.\??

I just want to applaud you guys for taking the effort to do this.

I am a big fan of the LOTR books and PJ movie series. I love the big battles - esp the ones in Two Towers. (I was the only one a bit disappointed with ROTK I think :) And I just can't wait to play a good working version of your mod.

Is there a good ftp site to download your mod?

And have you talked to Newline or Peter Jackson about your version.

04-13-2004, 09:49
mate, before this brings on the wrath of the builders, I'd advise you go to the first post and check out the website...

The developers are very very clear that the films are NOTHING to do with the mod. And no,they won't be talking to new line.

And btw, it's a Middle Earth mod, not a 'historical' LotR mod.

Don't want to be snippy, but it's all there and I know the developers sometimes tire of hearing this stuff.

Having said that, how excited am I? About as excited as you. this seems to be the most ambitious mod ever...

Hats off

Go to the official News Updates section to download. The previous downloads have been for MTW 1.1 Any future releases will be on MTW VI 2.01 ( I dont think the version of MTW VI matters, patch or not)

I would think not.. you don't bust your ass this much over something (and this looks like quite an endeavor) and then crap out in the middle of it. Throwing in the towel usually happens when it's ten-percent of the way through.

The rumors came into existence as I almost throwed in the towel. The first beta is 99% my work, and I was getting tired of the many discussions but little progress. I was also putting way too much time into it and I got a kind of METW burnout.

However things have improved much, the ME:TW - Team has attracted new members who are doing astonishing jobs Sadly Helper also left (who was a good guy in every way).

I must say that the progress is not as fast paced as in the early days but it is steady and a lot more trustworthy then before.

Cheers, Duke John

Gaius Vorrenus

He's saying hes heard rumors that the mod works with VI, and wants to know if they are true. Simple enough to get even through his broken English.

06-03-2004, 21:17
Ok... I assume it will be made for VI, as it's easier to mod in that version, if it's not necessary anyway. VI gives more room for modding things, so most mods are for VI.

Howdy folks, We're currently looking for someone to join the METW dev team. We need someone with alot of enthusiasm and free time and a reasonable understanding of modding for MTW.

The job is very specific, several units including the dwarves, orcs, snaga and olog-hai have been built in 3D, animated and rendered ready to become BIFs. What we need is someone to take the frames of animation and, using Unitmaker, turn them into BIFs usable in game. It would also mean weapon placement and creating all the files neccesary to assimilate these units into the build of METW. The job would also involve creating BIFs for new units as they are created.

It is a big and labourious job so please don't apply unless you are sure and have a good idea of what the job entails.

Many thanks - hoggy

Ypoknons
06-13-2004, 10:31
Bif placement is not a thing for me, so I'm afraid I cannot help. However, since this thread is no longer stickied, it's easy to ignore, and there those who think this mod dead. Think you could prove it not so if some screenshots of the models were shown to generate interest. Surprise is one thing - but I think excitement is more worth it.

Crap, I need to install MTW again.
Is this for VI? Or just MTW?

Duke John
08-09-2004, 19:16
VI has some extra features that gives us a better engine to recreate Middle-Earth. It allows us to have for example more unique unitgraphics and raiding Orcs.
So ME:TW requires VI.
