I seem to recall that invasions by sea should be possible if you know that the enemy has a port in a specific province...now, I have tried shinobi, geisha, ninja to no avail, so how the heck d'you do it? I'm confused and my head hurts...

I'm almost reluctant to tell you, seems half the Shogun community thinks it's a cheat.

Open up the port with a shinobi or emissary (I like them best, don't have to worry about security forces), then next turn the port ripe for invasion http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/wink.gif

Yup, once you know where a port is, you can send troops there from a port of your own. This was supposed to be a "feature," but the AI didn't use it properly, so it was never used. Since the AI doesn't use it, it is often considered a cheat. Fortunately, invading a province almost never destroys the port, so once you discover one, attack it with a small force from land, then import men to reinforce them. I admit that I have used it, but only to distract the Hojo Hordes for a few seasons.

I've used the port invasion too, but I swear I never impaled. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/wink.gif

So...just pop 'em in there and I can attack? Damn that's easy...

That's why some people consider it cheating - not only is it a totally easy way to take some key provinces, but you never have to worry about the AI pulling the same stunt on you!

Banzai,

Just so you know you can never destroy a port once built http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

Gregoshi,

ROFLMAO...you must be from Arkansas http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif
Did you try to impale, but found you couldn't http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/wink.gif

Don't read the following if you have a weak stomach for bad humor...

The Black Ship,

I couldn't impale because I have an aversion to Gore. Besides, until the AI can do port invasions too, the tactic is strictly Bush league. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

That should cover the equal time requirement.

Well actually the AI does use ports, just not with armies.
If you use the .matteosartori. cheat to view "everybody's" moves, you can usually spot enemy ninjas using ports to get into your provinces. It also does this to itself from time to time (ie. two opposing players not controlled by a person) but I'm not aware of it needing to get an agent to the actual province with the port (like us human players do) to access it.

In order to invade by sea you have to know which provinces are ports. If the unit returns to the original province, then the province didn't have a port. When the unit stays, that is only the first step. You need to end the turn. Then anything you have that is in a province with a port can go to the other port. The principle is similar to when you put a Shinobi in a province. You will not get info about the province until the next turn.

Personally I think sea invasion is a valid tactic. The risk of course is to leave yourself open to a multi-front war something not everyone wants. Me included most times!

If you want to find out where a clan's ports are, all you need is for one shinobi to be in ONE of these provinces at the beginning of the turn. Then pick him up and see which provinces are highlighted; it should include, IIRC, every other port belonging to your unwitting host.

Much faster than trial-and-error click-and-drag, assuming that you keep shinobi moving along with the front anyway and thus are in position to stumble upon a port.

I didn't know you could just click and drag and invade by trial and error. I thought a Shinobi had to scout first anyway.

Now that doesn't seem right. Is that what everyone was complaining about?
