Best game of all times:
Privateer 2: The Darkening

Best game of those listed:
Shogun Total War

You left out the GAH-option.

Best game of all time:

I'd say

Zelda: Ocorina of time. It was a really good game, it had enough side quests to keep you entertained and a good story line.

Other great games r:

Morrowind
Shogun + Medieval:TW
Freelancer
Timesplitters 2 (multiplayer is brilliant)
Diablo 2
Goldeneye
Perfect Dark
Mario 64
Star Wars (on the NES)
Micro Machines (again on NES, the multiplayer was fun)
Star Fox (or was it star wing over here in the UK?)
Final Fantasy 7+8
Skies of Arcadia
Shenmue 1 + 2

I refuse to acknowledge the existance of Final Fantasy 8. *shudder*

And my favorite games would have to be...

Daggerfall (first and foremost)
Thief Gold
Final Fantasy 7
Final Fantasy 6
Thief II (only for the player-made levels)
Half-Life (again, only for the player-made mods)

EDIT: Doh, forgot two...
Neverwinter Nights
Baldur's Gate II

So, in this order, not especially for how good they were, but for inovations

Imperialism
Lords of the Realm III
Starcraft
Shogun Total War (not much better, way off better than Medieval)
Morrowind
Warcraft III
Savage (at least what I've played in the demo, mp only)

No Way As much as i loved FF8, and i really did, FF7 had the most engaging storyline of any game i've played to date. And the materia system was a work of art.

Solo-ing BG2 with a classic Kensai-Mage was a treat. But a fighter-thief was also a pretty funny combo - I missed them spels on occassions though...

I have liste my preferences in a another similar thread, but here goes again:

- Civ series (all three)
- Master of Orion 2
- HOMM 2&3 (almost forgot about that... see what a lousy #4 does to a great series?)
- BG and BG2
- TW series

Can't name an overall best game, but I'll try by genre:

RPG: Planescape Torment.

FPS: Hmm... tough one. For MP, Enemy Territory. (UT2004 is a strong contender, but it's too new to be included.) For SP, probably Operation: Flashpoint.

RTS: Total Annihilation, of course. The interface was years ahead of its time: unlimited queuing of units and orders is something that's still rare in games. Simple economics with the focus on combat. The huge community has supplied lots of great mods. Modern machines can run the game with literally thousands of units involved in battles on unprecedently large maps.

TBS: Either Steel Panthers: World at War or Dominions 2. Dom 2 is too new to say for certain, though, so I think I'll go with SP:WAW. And it's free http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif Alpha Centauri, MOO2 and Civs get a honourable mention.

(Space) Sim: Freespace 2. It gave capital ships a reason to exist (beam weapons). Great military atmosphere.

Action: Diablo 2. I was a hopeless addict for a couple of years, so it's gotta count for something. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif The new Prince of Persia is very entertaining as well, but it probably doesn't have a lasting appeal.

System Shock: Yes, it deserves its own genre. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif And the first Shock is the better one IMO.

Squall is my fav main character in a video game of all time. I mean. You get to play an absolute ####### IT is sooo much fun.

I tried BG2 once. Gave up after 5 mins, went back to morrowind and uninstalled it, stupidly overated.

In no particular order:

- Baldur's Gate 2
- STW + MTW
- KOTOR
- Age of Wonders 2
- HOMM 3 (I have to agree with Rosacrux on HOMM 4 ... hopefully HOMM 5 will be an improvement)
- Tie Fighter
- Dark Forces

and for nostalgic reasons:

- The Bard's Tale

BTW, the expansion to HOMM 3 has IMO been a good example that listening to the group of hardcore fans does not necessarily lead to a better game.
The developers intended to add a new city with a mixture of Warhammer-like and cyborg units (e.g., Naga-tank), after heavy protests of parts of the community (IIRC at Astralwizard) threatening not to buy the expansion, the devs dropped the plan and went to a lukewarm elemental city instead ... sad

Well Efrem, I agree with you on Morrowind. It's quite overrated, I don't like it. This might change, I'm not that far into the game yet.

Ok, let's do a category-by-category listing.

RPG: Baldur's Gate II. My God, I wish more developers put this much time in their games.

RTS: WarCraft III. Actually an RTS for which you need skills instead of knowing what unit to use against another. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-zzz.gif

TBS: Total War. Hehe, call it a wargame, whatever you want. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

FPS: Wouldn't know, not a genre which can hold my imagination for long.

Sim: While not really a sim 'cause it's never happened before, Freespace 2. Epicness.

Citybuilding/sandbox: Sim City. Yeah baby

Godgame: Black & White. Great game, but it misses the epic scale which Peter Molyneux wanted. Too bad his new baby is Fable, I guess he never did like sequels. Even worse: that game is for XBox only. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-wall.gif

I found morrowind so empty, sure there were npc, but no interesting ones. The only character I liked was that telvani wizard that allowed thieves for his entertainment. And, the game is just to easy. Sure you can slide up the difficulty but being slain by a rat just feels wrong. You also level way too fast. What it does right however it does with grandeur, it really has moments of brilliance, the first time I saw a storm.....wow. Total immersion. And you really have the freedom to become whatever you want. For example, I hate killing NPC. I made a thief character with illusion magic, and I have not killed until I was level 20 and had to kill someone for the main quest. Sneaking and pickpocketing was enough to complete most sidequests. Maybe that is why I am so hard on this one, it is very good, but it could have been so great.

#1. The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time

#2. Medal of Honor: Allied Assault

#3. Cossacks: The Art of War (Mod1)

#4. Medieval: Total War

For it to be on this list I have to have been playing it for at least 1 1/2 years continuously.

No mate you mis-interpreted my comments. Morrowind is underrated. THat peice of sh*t BG2 is overated.

Damn I forgot Cossaks Cossacks with first expansion is EASILY best RTS game of all time. MTW can't really be called RTS. But even if you did call it RTS, it is horrible compared to cossacks. Combat in cossacks is just soooo more fun.

Civ 3 is good too. But good not great. I personally like it alot but it just doesn't stand up to the greats like morrowind and Cossacks.

I didn't like Baldur's gate much either. I played it for a few weeks but I simply wasn't engrossed. It's a decent enough game but for the most part I was unimpressed by the graphics, gameplay and the rest. Maybe the problem was that I never learned how to properly work all the aspects of the game but I found that after I had bugged around with the game quest for a while I was hit with a profound wave of indifference over completing this game. So I stopped and didn't pick it back up again.

Now I know a bunch of you are going to say but this feature is awesome or what are you talking about with the graphics?? They rock or whatever else happens to inspire you about the game. That's all fine. The damn thing simply bored me. That's all there is to it.

But, hey, the graphics man http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/angry.gif and the gameplay, oh, yeah, it was so cool http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/cheers.gif

http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

just kidding...

I mean, the face value of every game is not something everybody can agree on. Different players have different expectacions. And it's not only the kind of gamer - for instance, peeps with short attention span or an overproduction of teem hormones, shall probably find most TBS games pretty boring. OTOH, there are guys who'd first shoot off their right leg before playing an FPS or any other action game (me, for instance). Even most RTSs bore me to death.

As for funny things... hell, I even know a guy who loves Master of Orion 3 and HOMM4 http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

BG and BG2 for me did the trick by their immense storyline (1/3 of the time spent on the game was spent reading the various dialogues, descriptions and peaces of info scattered around) extremely fun and simple gameplay, the richest world ever found in such a game, decent combat system, decent graphics, great, great soundtrack, aboundant humor etc. etc.
