Yes farcry is too violent for germans and is banned. Thats what you get for living in a socialism. Your gov desides what you can and cannot see.

But lets talk about video/computer game cencorship. Right or wrong? I beleive that I or my parents shoould make the call not the government.

Quote[/b] ]Word came down from the official Far Cry web site today that German officials had banned a non-localized copy of the new shooter. It is unclear why exactly the game was removed from German store shelves, but it appears to be related to the level of violence in the game. Here in the United States, Far Cry received a rating of M, or Mature, from industry ratings group, the ESRB. In the past, the German government has banned certain games it deemed too violent for its citizens, including such titles as Grand Theft Auto 3/Vice City, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, and the Command & Conquer: Generals real-time strategy game.

Ubisoft announced plans to produce a youth-rated version of Far Cry for the German market. There is no current ETA on its completion. Meanwhile, Far Cry is widely available in North America and the rest of Europe.

Well it's obvious to see why Return to Castle Wolfenstein was banned, having plenty of pictures all over the place of a banned political party.

But it's their country, and they are free to do whatever they want. I certainly wouldnt want to live in Greece, they ban video games altogether

Hello,

Not too sure whether this was an Aprils fool, but seems the European 'gov' is planning to ban computer games completely within a few years.

I agree. If parents have no trouble with their kids playing an 18+ rated game then that is their business. It is the governments job to run the country, not telling us what to play. I do not like sadistic games like postal, but having exotic taste is not illegal.

About the euro ban, sounds like an hoax to me. Computer games have become a significant industry that employs thousands of people, they would not kill that.

No they're not, they're even forbidden to play this. Are germans anyless human than we are?? They are being deprived of their rights to choice.

Why they vote in scum like this I can't understand.

I wasnt talking about the population as a whole. I was talking about the leaders. When you have control of your own country, you can make whatever laws you want.
After all, it's a double-edged sword. Make violent games available to the public? You pissed off the conservatives. Ban violent games? You pissed off the liberals. The real secret to staying in office is figuring out whom is the largest voting demographic, and do whatever you can to please them.

Of course, I seriously doubt any of us in this forum has any real power in world politics, so I'm not at all concerned. If I wanted to change world politics and enforce or release laws, I'd play NationStates.net (which is what I'm going to do right now).

But of course, this thread already smacks of politics, and not gaming in general, so I'll bid you all a good day and stay the heck away from this thread in the future.

I don't quite see what banning games has to do with socialism... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-inquisitive.gif

You beat me to asking that question ... usually it's not the socialists here that shout loudest to get e.g., computer games banned but the conservatives.

On topic, firstly we are not talking about a ban here (though it effectively comes close to it). you can continue to uy the game if you are 18+ ... problem is of course that you cannot openly sell or advertise the 18+ version which is almost equivalent to a ban as no shop will sell it anymore (however some online stores will still have the 18+ version).

The situation was different for Castle Wolfenstein (in Germany we are sometimes overly sensitive when it comes to Nazi symbolism).

Personally I think age limits are fine, however the situation should be changed in a way that 18+ games can still be sold in a meaningful way (as it currently stands an 18+ categorization is almost a death blow)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I remember reading about some kind of 'black list' which violent games in Germany are placed on, meaning they have to be specially ordered. Is that the case?

This is so funny. Far Cry is banned in Germany and yet it is Europeans who will enjoy the fully uncensored version of Sacred, the new action/rpg from Ascaron. Apparently the sight of dismembered orcs, brigands, trolls, demons and other baddies is too much for Americans but par for the course for Euros?

Thankfully the American version isn't too toned down. At least we get to see the occasional beheading along with spurts and pooling of the runny red stuff... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

This is correct. If you are 18 you will still be able to buy the uncensored version - if the publisher still offers it and you find a store to buy it from (regular shops and even most online shops would not want to bother with age verification).

Castle Wolfenstein is another case as here in addition to the violence there is the Nazi theme - so the uncensored version is completely banned.

The toning down sometimes leads to ridiculous results - e.g., in C&C Generals the human soldiers are robots in the German retail version. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif

My mom won't let me play Farcry or any other games with the 'M' rating. Perhaps they'll release an english youth version? I can only hope...

I sort of appreciate the NA rating system in such cases; ie tag the item properly so that people will know what they will get, and if necessary, restrict (NOT ban) the sales targeting certain groups (schoolies, teenagers...).

Banning computer games for violence is bullturd. If you feel so able, go and ban violence itself. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-smile.gif

Turns out I was wrong. The American version of Sacred only sports the occasional blood spurt with no dismemberment or pools of blood. Upon installation of Sacred I immediately downloaded the no-cd executable (whenever possible, I do this for all my games) which, despite the fact that I own the US version, must have somehow enabled the gore. The other day I restored the original executable and patched Sacred to version 1.5 (naturally I used the US version of the patch) and let it rip. Bad news; no more dismemberment, pools of blood or extended blood spurts I can only hope that when the no-cd executable for 1.5 eventually becomes available it will restore the gory effects, I really miss them... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mecry.gif

Anyone in the States looking to buy the fully uncensored version of Sacred should purchase the UK version of the game. You can get the UK version at www.gogamer.com for about $10 more than the US version...

Gogamer.com's UK version of Sacred (http://www.gogamer.com/cgi-bin/GoGamer.storefront/4072bc650057ab86273fd0fedee2073d/Product/View/001SACRI)

Hehe ... sometimes the sensitivity regarding this topic really gets out of hand. There is an episode of the olf Star Trek series where Kirk & Co are on some Nazi planet.

This episode is the only one that has never been shown in German TV (though, AFAIK we did not miss too much with this particular episode http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif )

From what I have heard the issue was a so-called Ragdoll-feature (physically correct movement reactions of dead bodies when being shot).

Although it seems that this feature has been locked in the German retail version, unlocking it was rather easy.

Your kidding......

They banned the sale of the game because of ragdoll physics which are a staple in the modern FPS....

Thats whack dude....

Well, I partly agree with you - of course one has to ask the question why exactly are ragdoll physics and realistic blood and gore necessary in an FPS?

Also again, a ban in Germany usually does not mean that a game (or other product) cannot be sold anymore. It just meand that it cannot be sold to people under 18 and may not be advertised (of course I am a bit pi$$ed that this means in reality that even if you are older than 18 you will have to go the extra mile to get the product).

I expect that Doom 3 will be banned here on the very same day it reaches the shelves (if the publishers bother to bring the full version to the German market, that is)
