In another thread I read about 'the coolest villain', and I thought it would be worth a thread. Who is your favorite?
Mine, without a doubt is Shodan from system shock 1&2. She is in fact the best villain ever for me, no book/movie/game comes even close to the brilliant madness of this digital lady. What makes her so scary is not that she is evil, she is just immoral and totally egocentric. When she speaks it chills you to the bone, her voice is loaded with insanity. Shivers down my spine when she told me I was 'so very alone' and especially when she said I was becoming more like her, I even felt a bit of sympathy for her there.

ok cough it up

Yep, Shodan it is.

Jon Irenicus (BG2) gets a honorable mention, though.

Charlie Jolson from The Getaway. One evil, racist, nazi maniac.

You don't understand, do you Marky-boy? When Bethnal Green's finished with you, we'll bury you, and your kid

Shodan, I think it's the way she keeps calling you insect...and the way she keeps calling you up to brag...and the way she threatens you all the time in nasty ways while sounding like she is looking forward to carrying out her threats....and the voice, oh Dear Lord the voice...but worst of all is the fact you know she is right, that your weak human body is inferior to her mechanised brilliance, and that you are only still alive because you are now more machine then man...exactly as she wants.

I'm going to go hide in a corner now... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-curtain.gif

That communist guy who backstabs you in Freedom Fighters. mostly in that one level where he's talking to you through a loudspeaker as you go through the level. You defeat his minions while he tells you that you can never win. I just wished I could make the character yell stuff it idiot...

Sephiroth from FF7.
I don't know why, but he just wreaks of cool.

The Wizard

I would have to say Jon Irenicus from BGII. Man, that guy was evil He just made you so angry as he twisted you around the plot and it felt so good sending his arrogant, evil ass back to the dark place it came from.

I second that. I think he's so cool because if destroyed a whole town, killed loads of people, has that bad-ass masamune and still has time to keep his hair looking good ;)

You know, Shodan was a well-made villain and all, but I was not frightened of her or anything.
Spoiler Alert! Highlight to read. In fact, much of SS2 involves her giving you chores to do so the game can advance. And since you already knew she was the villain, there was absolutely no surprise when she turned on you to accomplish her own motives.
SS2 is my favorite game due to its atmosphere and completeness, not due to it's characters.

It would be Shodan from System Shock 2 for me. Brilliant writing and voice acting, as well as very memorable plotting.

Irenicus from BG2 is also memorable, but strangely I could not bring myself to hate him - did the opening video say, no malice, but signs of grim deeds to come? He did terrible things, but they did not seem to come out of malice and so I found myself not really wanting to kill him. (Unlike Saeravok from BG1, who I was jumping at the bit to hunt down - after the opening cinematic and the prologue).

An honorable mention should go to Calo Nord, from KOTOR. I swear, the first time I met him, I flinched as he walked past my character and exited the bar. He conveyed menace very economically, all the more so for not being the stereotypical looking baddy (cf. the Darth whatevers).

MalibuMan

Yeah, the opening cinematic from BG was much better than BG2, really made you want to hunt the bastard down Plus it got the right balance, I think, between cryptic and too cryptic. 'I will be the last, but you will go first...' and the poor guy clearly had no idea why Sarevok was after him

Or the villain from Max Payne 1:

Spoiler Alert! Highlight to read. When you've spent parts 1 and 2 chasing down the wrong guys and it turns out to be the boss of the corporation. The ending, when you're in the police car an Max says "Woden had the smile of a winner. That made two of us", is great.
The ending of Max Payne 2 was great, too

Spoiler Alert! Highlight to read. When he's stood over the corpse of Sax, and he says "I had a dream about my wife. She was dead, but it was all right." and the theme tune 'Late Goodbye' plays
