Just curious. There are some I think I have figured out. For instance JAG, I assume you are using your initials. There are many more, however, that I have no idea about, Cebei for example.

I chose Goofball because that was how my dad used to refer to me when I had done something stupid, which seemed to happen with monotonous regularity...

How about the rest of you? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-gossip.gif

Oh It's actually a word That gives me a little more insight, Soly. For those of you as ignorant as I am:

sol·ip·sism ( P ) Pronunciation Key (slp-szm, slp-)

2) The theory or view that the self is the only reality.

My nick has been the same for everything I do online ever since I started at Uni. I hadn't done much drinking before I arrived there, so I didn't really have the taste for beer then. My favourite (very girly) drink was Malibu and coke. I still have one every now and then, when I've had enough pints of bitter to get up the courage to ask for one with a straight face.

Mine is a bastardization of an Arabic word (مضفر - imported into Turkish and who knows what else...) meaning triumphant. I made it up as Muzaffer Postal (the triumphant boot) back in the dark ages when I was playing World Empire III on a P100. It has been my primary gaming alias, actually was the only one until I started using Hayreddin Barbarossa for seafaring/pirate games and Mao Dun for Emperor RotMK.

Hiji: A rare fungus found off the coast of Japan.
Also the name of a city.

i found this out after i made the name. Actually , i had random letters typed in for my gamespy account. i shortened it and i got Hiji. What are the chances it also meant a fungus.

Demon of Light
05-12-2004, 02:06
The idea behind mine is that you won't always like what I have to say (Demon) but I always strive for truth and fairness (of Light). There's also an element of Devil's advocacy here. Further, there is an idea of being something of a succubus involved in the name. All a person might see is iridescent light but, beyond that, lies the demon.

ichi means 'one' in Japanese. It is not an uncommon name. I specifically chose it after watching what I consider to be a really cool series of movies about a blind swordsman named Zatoichi, who usually just goes by 'just plain ichi'.

Made in the 60's starring Shintaro Katsu, they are quirky films but quite enjoyable. Recently a new movie with a new actor playing the role has come out.

Dhepee was my first email username on AOL way back when, and it comes from my first two initials DH, and then the weapon that I fence with, the epee.

Gregoshi
05-13-2004, 05:02
When STW came out, I needed a Japanese sounding name for the forums, MP and my clan. I've almost always based game names on my real name (Gregolas, Gregus, etc), so I wanted a Japanese sounding name based on Greg. After considering several common Japanese name endings, oshi seemed to sound best when coupled with Greg. My only fear was that I'd later find out that Gregoshi meant something really stupid in Japanese.

When MTW came along, I considered changing my name to something more European. However, in the end I didn't want to risk losing what little reputation I had gained with the name Gregoshi...bad humour has a name and that name is Gregoshi. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif

Back when i first joined the .org i tried to think of a name, but unfortunately for me i've never been very good at thinking of names. It would just so happen that one of my favorite units from stw was the Warriors monks so i decided to just go with Monk.

Though when i think about it now; the name 'Monk' is a complete polar opposite to my personality, and yet i keep the name. I guess when it comes right down to it, i've grown to like the name. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

We are not mad at germans, we just don't like them for them being as they are, especially when there are more than 3 in one place. That may sound harsher than it should but tey don't have a sense of humor, they come here, not understanding a single word we are saying while we understand them perfectly, thinking we laugh with them when in fact we laugh because of them.
They are really poor, pathetic creatures. We really feel pity for them. Not so much that we wouldn't take their money of course.

As for the Saxons...they just sound 'behindert' with a huge speech inpediment...As for Austrians...oh, well... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Anyway, Quid comes from Latin and means as much as 'What' or 'How much' or 'How many' or even 'Why'. Originally, I used Quid novi which means 'What's new ?' I thought it appropriate at the time and have used Quid or Quid Novi ever since.

Quid

Edit: I forgot to mention what an interesting thread this is. I secretly always wonder how people come up with their nicknames. It seems, that many actually give some careful thought to them...

Oh go on then, I'll repeat my old yarn one last time, then anyone who asks about my name can be given a link to this topic.

frogbeastegg
Origins: a game called Thief: The Dark Project has some small frog like creatures called frog beasts, they are sometimes found in eggs which you can collect and break open to get a frog beast. Frog beasts are quite cute, but very deadly as they explode on impact or provocation. They are, in essence, little amphibian hand grenades who sit next to your feet, look cute, then blow you into a million chunks.

How I got the name: I was trying to think of a name to use on another forum, I couldn't think of anything so I started to flick through my Thief book. It fell open on the frog beast egg page, I thought if you ran that together into one word it sounded...catchy.

Known abbreviations: froggy is the most common, also frog, beasty, frogs legs, Lady Frog, Frog Tzu, Frogeavelli, frogbeasty, beasty baby, FBE, froglet, geisha froggy, frogbeast... er thing, gosh that's a long name, and some others I don't remember right now.

In retrospect the name suits me quite well, right down to my very rare but explosive temper. It also allows me the strange habit of calling myself a frog, and the usage of the frog smiley.

Heh, on television one night a couple of years ago the comedic duo Roy Slaven and H.G. Nelson read an e-mail that basically went as follows:

Hi Roy, H.G.,

I was utterly appalled a few days ago to find in the dictionary that arseclown is not actually a word. So I am launching a campaign to make it such. I figure that if you happen to mention it on TV, it will lend it some degree of authority and credibility, helping to establish its rightfully deserved place in the English language.

I took up the cause. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

SwordsMaster
05-17-2004, 15:10
ok, I'll explain how I got mine.

Its quite easy, there was a character type in one of the classic table role games(Loremaster, or D&D, cant remember).The character type was not particularlty tough, but was incredibly good using weapons of different kinds.

And as I consider myself a genius, I thought of somathing that combined both medieval conceptions and genius, then I thought that Kensai would be a cool nickname for STW, and then my brain drifted to SwordsMaster.I liked it and here I am.

Enjoy my presence. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smokin.gif

when I was 16, I entered one of those Scene groups (I was their Graphics guy). The others gave me a pseudonym -----> Fantasy wich short after that was cut down to Fanty.

All my friends kept calling me like that. Even my mom knowed, when there is someone on the phone asking for Fanty, its me.

when I got internet, I kept that nick.

Som my nick is Fanty since 16 years by now. (I am now 32) ;)

Red Yak
05-19-2004, 13:23
I've been using it for a couple of years now. It was inspired by Yakkuru the red elk that Prince Ashitaka rides in Princess Mononoke. Yakkuru is one of my favorite characters in the film (even though he doesn't talk). I got mixed up and ended up with Yak instead of Elk. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-confused.gif
The fact I also have red hair I thought was quite fitting.

Though I usually use Otterdance for most online exploits including Multiplayer MTW.

Hepcat
12-26-2006, 01:31
ok, I'll post the definition of my name.

Hepcat comes from the slang which was used by Jazz and Swing musicians in the 1930s and 40s and pretty much means a swing musician.

Though the word can be broken down to Hep (meaning cool, later changed to hip) and Cat (which was pretty much what musicians called anyone from the era). I chose this name because I am a swing musician and often use the name in the Jazz Band so it is starting to catch on among my friends who have started calling me Hep.

Well, this name is from the first game I ever played online: Sacrifice. Those were the days...

You played a wizard... need I say more? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

The sole variation is 'Wiz', which I have taken to using in online play now, after a seemingly endless slew of other nicks.

~Wiz http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-jester.gif

Since I've since changed nicks...

Let's first establish that I'm of Indo-European (Frankish/Frisian) as well as Semitic (Jewish) descent. Therefore:

Baba = Sanskrit (the most ancient Indo-European language still alive, IIRC) for father (curiously in Slavic it means hag :wacko:). Compare papa/poppa. Also Semitic and Eastern (Ali Baba).

Ga'on = Hebrew (the language of my people) for genius, sorceror or wizard.

Which gives us Papa Genius (lol, GZA)/Wizard.

Bijo
06-20-2007, 13:55
I preferred to make one anew but a quick search showed me this fine thread.

When I invent my username it usually has some expressive or descriptive meaning behind it and possibly other factors I try imagining thereafter. It is as follows:

MAIN REASONS:
(1) when pronouncing my initials as a word it would roughly sound like "Bijo" (in Dutch and English);
(2) a good friend told me I am like a strange or peculiar jewel or diamond or something of the kind of which there are only few; thus
(3) in French the word Bijou means gem or jewel (and I like the language);

ADDITIONAL REASONS:
(4) it allows shortness and effectiveness;
(5) letter-wise (including its character count) it appears balanced;
(6) when typing it on a typical QWERTY keyboard it gives (me) the sensation of both balance and imbalance and the keys are close to each other;
(7) another friend usually greets me with "Yo!" which sounds like the second syllable;
(8) "Bi" sounds like "Be" from "to be";

Therefore: Bijo.

Louis VI the Fat
06-26-2007, 00:50
I joined when MTW was the latest title. So I chose a medieval name. It is simply a real French king from the right period with a name I find somewhat amusing.

Wiki on Louis VI the Fat (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Le_Gros_Louis_VI), 1081-1137.

Some may also remember that I was called Louis IV for a while - I had my kings mixed up. It should've been Louis VI like it is now.
During a mafia game, set in the town of Fatlington, I briefly changed my name to Luigi VI di Fatlington.

Not exactly sure why I chose this name... it does have a rather Fruity Ring to it doesn't it? I had some swords I picked up in Okinawa, and at that time I was rather enthralled by Japanese History. But I'm not sure I want to change it. I've stuck with it since '04, so it wouldn't make a lot of sense to go with something different.
