Well today is the day we all take to the streets and wave our beautiful flag shouting hooray…
Congratulations to all people with Norwegian blood running in their veins, and to all others joining in the fun.

What are you actually celebrating?

Or is it just a chance to get drunk?

We celebrate the constitution.

For some it might be only a chance to get drunk, but for most it is about pride in our country and celebrating and having fun. (even if they are drunk)

One aspect of the 17th of may is the russe celebration (which I were part of this year). And this is a celebration where drunkeness is rampant. The russe celebration is a celebration which last the entire third and final year of high school, but is officially in May month. During our senior year we clebrate that 12-years of primary education has come to an end and that a life as responsible adults await. But for most it is mostly a chance to get really shitfaced for a month before final exams.

The 17th of May is celebrated with different parades. And most spend time with their family or friends. And most (mainly women) dress up in the traditional costume, the bunad.

Is Independence Day so important in Norway?

In Belgium Independence Day is popular because it's just a day off in July, but there's no national feeling at all... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wacko.gif

It is important to us because it marked the end of 400 or so years under Danish rule. And eventhough we ended up in a union with Sweden for the next 90 years, we were an independant country with our own laws and parliament, in contrast with the years under Denmark, where we were governed from Copenhagen.

Some of the reason for the pride is probably also because we gained our independance and constitution without bloodshed.

So independent Norway is a rather young state too (as Belgium, only independent since 174 years)?

Yes the constitution was written in 1814, but we didn't become totaly independant untill 1905.

Also an occupation by Nazi Germany 35 years later which put Norway yet again under foreign rule makes this Independence Day important.
The last German soldier left Norway on the 8th of May 1945 and needless to say the 17th became a tremendous celebration with everyone taking to the streets waving that which was forbidden; the Norwegian colours and themes... we continue this tradition today.

Didn't they gain their independence from Denmark on May 17th 1814? then in 1815 they were taken by Sweden and held until 1905.
