Aren't stingrays inedible? And don't they just bask in the shallows? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-clown.gif

This is mine:

How could you possibly believe a fish story that you heard, let alone only read on the internet????? Even pics can be faked. I wanna touch that slimy little minnow to verify its existance http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

1 meter and +/- 70 centimeter, but it was not a fish and he did not like having a hook in his upper arm. Part of the fun with fishing is beer but it can lead to this kind of situations, but hey, better to catch something

whoever told you stingrays were inedible is so unbelievably incorrect, i ate some and they taste kinda like crab.

I caught a small crab once...

And a giant squid. Except it was a baby one in the plankton so it was too small to see.

Once when I was fishing in the Gulf of Mexico with my father on a 20 foot boat - this was by the way when I was 14.

We where fishing appoximately 12 miles out into the gulf - unable to see the shore at all and next to the oil rigs. We were trolling fishing for King Mackrel and Tuna. All of a sudden something grapped the line that my father's best friend was using - 300 pound test - for trolling for tuna and ran the line out so fast that the reel began to smoke. Once he got it stop the boat was pulled backwards against the current and the troll motor. Then it broke.

Most likely we hooked on to a shark of significant size or a dolphine.

But it sure makes for an interesting the one that got away story.

my big fish would have to be some of the salmon ive caught, i cant remember what the weight was, but some were getting close to 3 1/2 to 4 feet

A horribly poisonous one, about 5cm long, which I had to throw back...due to it's poisonousness.

My biggest catch was a 500lb. Blue Marlin I caught about 5 years ago while deep sea fishing with my brother-in-law about 50 miles off the Outer Banks of North Carolina. We got that fish up to the boat, after a 90 minute battle (I was exhausted), and we tagged it (for scientific study) and cut the leader letting it go.

My most memorable catch though was a fishing trip with my grandfather when I was about 8 years old. He was trying to show me how to fly fish, and it was very frustrating learning how to cast and not hook every tree branch in the woods along the small Pennsylvania stream we were fishing.
Luckily for me there was one dumb 12 brown trout in the pool, and I managed to drop my fly right in front of his nose. I hooked him and reeled him into my net. My shout of joy ringing through the woods, my grandmother could hear me from the house a quarter mile away. We laugh about that memory to this day.

One time when I was a little kid, I went grouper fishing on vacation on one of those huge boats with like 50 people. For those of you that don't know, grouper are usually only around 30-40 long, but can get absolutely monstrous. I mean like five feet monstrous. Of course, you usually don't catch those.

I was only like 11. I had my little piece of squid on the bottom; all I had caught all day were non-game fish. I thought to myself, This deck is kind of slippery, and even the tiny fish I have caught so far have fought far beyond the strength I would have attributed to them. If I get a large grouper on here, I might get yanked off the friggin' boat Of course I was only joking with myself. That'll never happen.

So, low and behold, in about two minutes, I get this monstrous yank on my line, lifted my feet a clear foot off the ground. (everyone was standing) Thankfully, I gained my foothold, and started reeling. The rod was bent over like an extremely sharp parabola, and I was hunched over the side rail, desperately trying to lock myself into an upright posture to fight this beast.

After thirty seconds, the line went slack. I thought the monstrous bending of the pole meant the hook must have set itself. I was dead wrong.

The thing must have been friggin huge, at least a few feet. I had seen another kid my age catch one of those thirty inchers, and it put up nowhere near as much fight as that. The worst part was, everybody put in a couple dollars to a pool which would all go to whoever caught the biggest fish caught. $100 is a lot of money to an eleven year old. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Redleg- How substantial is substantial?

dessa14

i think a five footer is substantial for a mako shark.
but to break 150+ kg line.
i don't think very many 5 foot makos could do that.

now i know a guy who caught a 300 kg tiger shark, he hooked up an entire ray and left it out on a sand bank at low tide, it had very heavy line linked up to a winch which was bolted deep.

hey octavian, i use predominatly nets, like cast nets and bait nets. other then that i use handlines and hand spears.

catch lots of 6-8 inch whiting in my cast net.
thanks, dessa

Mine was a net like you would use to get a bass into a boat. Not the best fish I ever caught but the most memorable. I was about 12 and I kept breaking lines on a fish in my pond. (it was line that was probably older than me). We always used to feed our fish, most were too large for the pond anyway. One day I noticed that the catfish would come up to the edge to eat dog food that had settled up against the bank. Being an odd child I decided to purposely put some dog food up at the edge of the water to lure them in and sneak up on them and net them. By some strange chance it worked.

I wish we knew - it broke the line with over half of it out - which means we never got a look at what we caught. No dorsal fin or anything. So we kind of ruled out the dolphins. But where we were fishing the Tuna run around 200-300 pounds and the sharks get over 12 feet. We were out where the water begins to turn from blue green to blue in the gulf.

nah, if it was a dolphin it would have had a dorsal fin, unless it was deep, but you would have seen it surface nearby i would think.

i wouldn't know about gulf waters, but i do know mako sharks run in the deep channel down the east coast of australia, they pick up on the tuna and such that move out of the straight or come up the coast of tasmainia.

really good eating if you get one, alot of flake in aus comes from them.

Personally I think we caught a shark that somehow got a sharp tooth thru the steel leaders we used on the test. But it makes a cool story and almost everyone that has never been out deep sea fishing thinks is one big lie - and its really humorous

The worst fish I ever caught was once again in the Gulf of Mexico - fishing in the shipping channels - I caught a rock fish - and my dad took out his 357 Magnum and blew it off the hook. Damn things are so deadly that we didn't want to take a chance taking it off the hook.

So being the rednecks we are - we shot it off the hook verus just cutting the line.

I've never caught a fish http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mecry.gif .
This is all my brothers fault, as I was standing and fishing, with my casting rod as I had done for half an hour then my little brother came, and said I want to fish too so I gave him the casting rod and he threw it out once, and got a fish http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/angry.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/angry.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/angry.gif

if i ever get a fish like that on the hook, i just chop the line off, but then again, my tackle on the line costs about 20c

i mean redlegs rock fish.

Have I told you about the time I went fishing? Well after putting that bullhead on my hook and dorget a few hours, my prey took the bait.
I struggled with the catch for several weeks without getting the damn thing onboard.
Finally people were sent out and told me if I didn’t let go the world would be destroyed... I loosened the line and vowed that someday I would get that damned Midgardserpent.

Explain to them what noodling is Major, a sport not for the faint of heart. In fact, I think one has to be a bit http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wacko.gif to do it.

Major Robert Dump

Noodling is where you go to a lake/creek/river/pond and search for underwater catfish nests (some call them lairs/dens whatever). The nests are typically a hole in the mud along a cliffy bank or under a rock at the bottom. Once you find a possible then comes the fun part.

YOU STICK YOU HAND INTO THE HOLE AND WIGGLE YOUR FINGERS AS BAIT, THE CATFISH BITES YOUR HAND, AND YOU GRAB IT FROM THE INSIDE WITH ONE HAND AND THE LIPS WITH THE OTHER AND PULL THE f&@*ER OUT AND EAT HIM FOR DINNER.

It really is exhilerating. You have to fight the sons of bitches to get them out, and I can't imagine what its like for these guys who are pulling out 50+ pound fish. Snapping turtles and snakes are always a possibility, so carrying a sharp blade and having at least two people with you is a necessity (some ppl noodle alone, and that is pure nuts).

I can't see well underwater (its usually muddy anyway) and I can't hold my breath for long so I typically use a snorkel and have used scuba gear at times in deep spots. I am also a crappy swimmer...I can only stay above water if I keep moving, so I do wear FLOATIES sometimes (go ahead and laugh, big tough guys) I don't have any scars yet except for a spot on my right ring finger where I snagged it on a hook that was already embedded in a fish's mouth. The abrasions u get from the fish teeth heal up quickly.

Most noodlers keep their spots a secret, and I just do it for obnoxious fun, not as an art or a way of life, so its sort of a side thing I do a couple times a year. That being said, I don't have any special places and know of none really, and may not ever. I have a few places I've heard legends about (like Jed Johnson lake at Ft. Sill Oklahoma where the mercury in the water has made mutant catfish...of course I wouldn't want to eat THOSE) and may give them a try sometime.

annual event, I go but don't participate (http://www.okienoodling.com/4fest.html)

I can only dream of catching one this big (http://www.snopes.com/photos/noodling.asp)

dessa14

that is completley insane, and i thought my spearing on 50kg rays and such was crazy.
when you have a 50kg ray like i have seen, but not caught, they really have a long tail and spike, and if they get you with the spike you will be off your feet for a week.
and you will have an oozing puncture wound for 3 weeks.
