View Full Version : Replayability: games you keep coming back to?

Just curious what games people have that they keep coming back to? Some games may be excellent, but never give you an urge to re-play them (it's early days, but KOTOR may fall in this category for me). But some just give gameplay and unique atmosphere that you can't get from newer entries.

Here are some games I keep re-installing:

Panzer General 2: the first was candidate for best game of all time, but it is the second - with its balance, mods and polish - that I keep returning to when I need a WW2 wargame fix.

Jagged Alliance 2: you just can't beat the combination of RPGish qualities (levelling, finding stuff, NPC characterisation, cut-scenes Elliot, you ..., etc) and rock solid gameplay (tactical AND a meaningful strategic layer).

Baldur's Gate/Fallout - every year or two, I seem to re-install these, just like watching a favourite old movie on a wet Bank Holiday (albeit around 30 times more time intensive...)

Medieval Totalwar - maybe early days yet ... ok, this is a lie, I don't reinstall as it's never off the hard disk. The replayability seems amazing, thanks to the variety of factions and the strategic options open to them. But above thanks to PBM here at the org. Strangely, I never get the urge to fire up Shogun again - the MTW strategic map and campaign gameplay is just so superior.

UFO Enemy Unknown (X-Com): has many of the attractions of Jagged Alliance 2, although due to its age lacks the chrome.

For me, it's the games that are fresh (and random to an extent) every time you play them, and yet there is a feeling of progression, i.e. campaign or at least very long scenarios. Possibly the biggest aspect would be non-linearity - if I remember everything what needs to be done, it's niether intriguing nor entertaining to do it again. If the game is linear, it usually lasts me however long it takes me to finish it, and that's why appreciate the games that have both randomness and a feeling of purpose at the same time. So:

MTW - I haven't uninstalled it at all
EU2 - also never uninstalled as of yet
Morrowind - I guess I use it to blow off steam every once and a while, and go hunting to add another piece to my museum collection; I don't feel like replaying it from the start though
HoMM3, AoW, Disciples 2, Jagged Alliance 2, Fallout Tactics - I reinstall some of them sometimes, but get bored again rather quickly; I guess I just played them to death when they were new

And the more recent entries that seem like they're going to have a long staying power are Combat Mission games (BtB and AK), and Dominions 2. They're interesting enough that I feel like leaving them on my HD even if I'm not actively playing them at the moment.

At the moment MTW reigns supreme with the coming back to it again and again games.
Besides MTW, I also come back to Counter-Strike alot. Although I almost always just play against bots with CS: Condition Zero. Don't really feel like going online anymore. Here I can choose more like how I want to play.

There are other games I've come back to in the past many times, but haven't played them in some/a long time now.

- Diablo 2: Lord of Destruction - Played it many times on and off.
- Morrowind - Recently reinstalled the game, but haven't gotten around playing it again. Same as D2: LOD playing it on and off.
- Starcraft (Broodwar) - Excellent game with an excellent story.
- Delta Force 2 & Delta Force: Landwarrior (3) - Too bad Novalogic decided to go a way with BHD that didn't appeal to me.
- Warcraft II + Xpack - My first true love (~:p) with PC gaming.

And there probably more games that I cannot remember.

Yep MTW is one of the first things i install on a new system or hard drive. I haven't played it in about 2 months but i'm sure i'll come back to it http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif i've got some saved games that are either in a really good position or a really poor turn of events have just killed an advance or something but they are still all fun to play.

I'd also say half life would have to be the most consistant piece of software for installed time on my PC, i don't think its ever not been on one of my HDs.

Other than that its genre setting games like the civilisation series or sim city series, and even Frontier Elite 2. I'm one of these people that like nice open ended games, i must not like restrictions http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Hmm Shogun is legions better than Medieval IMO.

It just feels right.

I mean is aim WAS ACTUALLY DONE.

As opposed to Medievals which STILL HASN'T been done and was just ridiculous at that period in time. medieval fails on sooo many levels it aimed for something special BUT MISSED and ended up being worse than shogun which worked and was amazingly polished. Not to mention the lack of support medieval got.

Civilization II - I only stopped installing-uninstalling it when I got Civ3.

Master of Orion II - it survived MOO3 and I recently installed it for the 1.000th (or something close) time

Master of Magic - played in for the first time on a 386DX/40 with 4 megs RAM... a few days ago installed it on my brandnew Athlon 3200+ with 1 gig of RAM... the only two things not changed are AMD and MoM http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

Bard's tale - compared to recent RPGs it looks, feels and plays silly... but it has a way of capturing the imagination. Not to mention the memories

Colonization - another MoM case. it was installed on my HDD a year after MoM, must've been one of the last games I installed on my 384DX before changing it for a 486/100. the last time I installed it was on my previous machine... when I get tired with Crusader Kings, it might find it's way into my current configuration too http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

A honorable mention goes to HOMM2 and HOMM3 and also to the only RPG next to Bard's Tale I've installed for a second time: Baldur's Gate (and 2).

Back when I had more time to play games, I used to have a yearly ritual of re-installing and finishing Dungeon Master and Star Control 2. Planescape: Torment and Freespace 2 also fit in this category. Other than Torment, these games aren't all that replayable, but they're very enjoyable.
http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif

Games that have never left my hard disk and that I still occasionally play:

Nethack
Steel Panthers: World at War
Rampart (Remember that? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif)
MTW (of course)
Alpha Centauri

Dominions 2 is rapidly becoming such a game, but it's too new to say for certain yet.

Often Reinstall:
Starcraft&Broodwars - I've wasted so much time on this.
Civilization 3 - Definitly the best of the series.
Medieval: Total War - Of course.
Morrowind - Great RPG.
NWN - Another good RPG.
MechWarrior 4(V/BK/Mercs) - Best mech fighting game out for PC.
Silent Storm - Good WW2 strategy RPG.
Warcraft 3 - Fun RTS, excellant editor.
FreeSpace 1&2 - Great space sim.
Independence War 2 - Another good space sim.
Battlefield1942 - Excellant FPS.
Vice City - Shooting and driving.
Mafia - Very good story along with shooting/driving.

Would Reinstall for nostalgia if I had time:
Lords of the Realm 2 - Medieval strategy game.
MoM - Fantasy strategy game.
MoO2 - Space strategy game.
Civilization 2:Test of Time - Civilization.
Jedi Knight - Star Wars FPS.
Metal Fatigue - Futuristic/Mech based RTS.
MechWarrior 2 - Good mech fighting game.

And yes, i've had all the games listed in often reinstall installed in the past few months. I'm thinking about starting up another NWN or MW4:Mercs game at the moment. The nostalgia group is games I did enjoy, but mainly when I had my old comp. For the most part the newer games offer more options.

Chaoslord, Rosacrux, you guys rock

Master of Orion 2 is the ultimate game I wish that they would make a MOO2.5 with exact same gameplay but better graphics. That would be such an awesome game...

MOO2 is my favorite game of all time and I would play it more but after I played it constantly for 6 years It's kinda getting old http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mecry.gif. I will still install it on my newest computer though. I just hope that I can still find the patch... Somewhere...

Half life is the only game that has never left my hard drive, i suppose that it also contains CS actually makes it two games. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

As for re-installing games I cant help myself from having another stomp through the Homeworld games. The story lines and cutscenes gives a good feel to the games and always leaves me with a nice sense of satisfaction.

But (rather unfortunately) the games I most frequently re-install are the fifa series. This is mainly due to an incurable itch I get every now and again for a footie game, but it doesn't usually last long and is off my hard drive in a matter of days

Here is my list:

* Ultima Online – Never left my hard disk since it was installed on early 1998 (well, it survived 4 computer upgrades since the Pentium I 133, each time immediately reinstalled). I rarely play it these days but can't bring myself to uninstall and close my account.
* Baldur’s Gate I & II – Seems like I will always keep reinstalling these sooner or later. One of the best RPG series ever.
* Morrowind – Another classic RPG. The urge to reinstall this comes every so often.
* Heroes of Might and Magic III & IV – Can’t really explain the charm of this series but I am always coming back.
* Diablo II – Yes, although it gets old pretty quickly each time, I still load it from time to time for some quick runs to Hell and back.
* MAME games – Well, this not exactly counts toward “reinstalling” but ever since I discovered this wonderful emulator back in 1998, I sometimes keep firing up those “Double Dragon”, “Galaga”, “Crime Fighter II”, “Tapper”, “Golden Axe” and other 80s classics.

I am sure that Medieval Total War and Neverwinter Nights will join this list as years go by, those are still too young.

SMAC, Civ series.

AOK, TC

Also, every so often I come back to play Black & White. It would be a killer game, except it's still somewhat unstable, and extremely hard to backup your creature. I always get discouraged when my creature loses its mind due to a new patch I installed http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif

I actually preferred SMAC over this, mostly because of the horrible combat system in Civ III. Plus the AI betrays you waaaaay too often, especially when you have a ROP.

And the best thing about SMAC was the unit creation system. I understand why they left this out of civ III, but still...

You should get (if you haven't) Call of Duty. I used to play DoD an awful lot from about the same version you did i think, and got a little bored with it just before i got CoD. The single player is good for a couple of goes but the multi player just keeps on getting better, and some mods that are up and coming look good.

Operation Flashpoint plus expansion pack great

MTW VI + SHOGUN MI classic

In no particular order, the games that have been removed then put back on my system time and again.

-Shogun: MI
-Quake III
-Homeworld
-Diablo II: LoD
-Americas Army
-RTCW: Enemy Territory
-KOTOR
-Half Life
-Unreal Tournament (the original not 04 or 03. Original UT just has that lasting effect imho)
-BF 1942
-Call of Duty

MTW is not on this list only because it has never left my system (if you don't count installing mods). I doubt it ever will, until Rome of course. But then again maybe even after Rome i may be playing MTW on the side just like i play STW every now and again.

My All Time Reinstall Champion has to be Pirates Although I didn't need to ever 'install' it on the older machines, I've made sure I always had copies available for every computer I've had from the C64 to the Amiga through DOS and Windows and I play it at least once or twice every year.

Other regular reinstalls/never-deletes/often-replays for me:

-Master of Orion 2
-Master of Magic
-Sword of the Samurai
-Shogun:TW
-Europa Universalis 2
-Transport Tycoon
-Rollercoaster Tycoon

You can have all the pretty, flashy games you want, but it it's usually the open-ended, deep strategy games that often have the most longevity. Of all those, sometimes it's the open-ended 'sandbox' options that make a game easy to return to (part of Pirates appeal, I think, was the ability to basically do anything you wanted to).

Oh yes it is I love the fact that you can finnish the game without killing anything, shame the game loses track of this after the Lebedev assasination. Manderley: 'like the terrorists that died by your very hands tonight', kind of a pity. I was absolutely amazed in my second run, that Anna requested another partner because I was too soft on the terrorists, and that the guy in the armory aplauded my nonlethal playing style (and gave me bullets for it http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-jester.gif). Did you play the sequal as well? Not as good as the first, but very much worth your time if you can look past some of it's inconsistancies.

Just re-installed another old favourite - Age of Rifles. A b**** to get working on XP, but well worth it. Fending off countless Zulus on a mountain in Hlobane, holding the thin red line at Inkerman, recreating the French triumph at Austerlitz, blundering through the rebel lines at the first Bull Run, machine gunning Ethiopians at Adowa ... you can do it all thanks to some wonderful user made scenarios still available on the web.

multiplayer games and long drawn out strategy or sim games seem to be the best for replayability.
strategies and sims just for the reason you can change your mind 50x over and have a different strategy.

multiplayer is rather simple, there is no end and who can get over shooting their mate in the head or backstabbing him when he isn't looking.

Spoiler Alert! Highlight to read. Kill Anna Navarre. The computer guy (I forget his name, he had big glasses, and he goes to Tracer Tong's place later on) deletes the records. Denton tells Manderley it was 'a surprise attack', and you even stay friends with Gunther (nobody knows you killed her). I just saw the topic of this and was reminded of all the old favorites I've been installing and playing lately. Right now on this computer (I was trying to cut down on hard drive space but all my old games have killed any chances of that) I have 1602 AD, Master of Orion 2, and the first RTS that i really loved; Submarine Titans Now that I started playing it again I keep saying how many things are now standard in RTSs that aren't in ST. If a Sub Titans 2 game was ever made it would rock so much... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/idea.gif

Does anyone know how to make X-Com or X-Com Apocalypse to work on XP? I haven't been able to get them to work.

econ21
07-11-2004, 10:39
I've got X-Com working fine on XP. I don't recally exactly how I did it, although I know it was a headache. My CD version did not work, but I think I downloaded a Gamer's lounge version that did. I got a lot of help from a post on usenet by Henri Arsenault (probably comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.strategic) on how to get X-Com working in XP. Here is what I cut and paste from this, to keep on my computer for future reference:

option>Now, for us idiots who can't make inferences, can you give a >step-by-step in how to install, set up and start the game with >XcomUtil? > Scott would be glad to do it, but since he is busy and told me how to do it, here is what I know. This is for Windows XP. The Gamer's lounge program works, although it says UFO instead of xcom.

Download Xcusetup 9.3 beta from scott Jones page. Unzip it into an Xcom folder. It is at the very end in very small letters in the middle of a paragraph (word beta). Version 9.30 might not work - it didn't work until I got that version, but there were other issues too...Unzip it into the same folder as the program you downloaded fromGamer's lounge (which is the PC Gamer version).

Run the program from start/accessories/command prompt and not from start/run. It will tell you to run it twice. The first time is an offer to run some fodder program (to avoid having to turn off 3D acceleration?), I said no, but I suppose you can say yes. It will ask you a bunch of questions about options for the game such as better weapons etc. ans wer any way you want, you can change it later. Before running Xcusetup (which manages Xcomutil), it is easier to go into the xcom directory, otherwise you have to type the path name every time you type a command. If the programs are in c:\xcom, then to do this type cd c:\xcom in the dos window, which will put you right in the Xcom directory. tURN OFF 3d ACCELERATION AND RUN THE OPROGRAM IN wIN 95 EMULATION (i AM NOT SURE IF THIS IS NECESSARY OR NOT). IN summary: 1)Get the right Windows version of Xcom (for instance from the Gamer's lounge). Unzip it into an xcom folder, say in c: So it would be in c:\xcom if it were in a folder in drive c: 2) Get the beta version 9.31 of xcusetup from Scott Jone's site and unzip it into the Xcom folder. (Vesion 9.3 will probably work for most people). 3) Opebn a dos window by pressing the start button and looking in the accessories folder for command prompt. 4) In the dos window type cd: c:\xcom or the path to where the program is. 5) It will tell you to do it twice. Do it twice and answer the questions about options. 6)Turn off 3D acceleratiobn by right clicking on the desktop window and finding the slider that says no acceleration (this may or may not be necessary for you). Right click on the icon Runxcom or Runxcomw (in my case it is the latter that works) in the xcom folder and tell it to run in Win 95 mode (this may or may not be necessary for you). 7) Start Xcom by opening the dos window as before and typing Runxcom or RunxcomW (capital letters are not required) and the program should run with the options you have specified. If you have said yes to improved base, your first base should appear as a C shape, so you know thye Xcomutil is working. If that doesn't work, contact Scott Jones on ICQ 61520209 and he will walk you through to find what is causing the crash. This could be the wrong version of Xcom, the wrong version of Xcusetup, 3D acceleration not turned off, old versions of xcom or xcomutil in the xcom folder, typing in the wrong dos window (start/run is no good), and maybe other stuff too. Have fun. Henri

Edit: the Scott referred to is Scott Jones, X-Com guru and author of the wonderful XCommutil. A google search should come up with his webpage and help you track down the Gamer's Lounge version of the game.

Quote (Fragony @ July 03 2004,16:59)]the Lebedev assasination.
You know, there's a third way to do that bit.

Later, after you escape MJ-12 facility, you don't have to kill Navarre to get the door key from the computer guy (did you kill Navarre with guns on the landing, or killphrase her, BTW?).
Wow this game keeps amazing me I always killphrase her, I am a wuss. Got me thinking, when you kill Anna in battery park, does that mean that Gunther won't attack me in the Templar Cathedral? I like Gunther, I always wanted to talk it out http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-jester.gif

Spoiler Alert! Highlight to read. If you don't kill Navarre in the station (you let her kill you), she calls on you in the MJ-12 facility cell (she says "I came to watch you die" to which Denton replies "You're early. I've got at least twenty hours left")
Do you save Paul? Or let him die in the apartment after you send the NSF signal?

I discovered I could save him on my second run, but I have yet to break the MJ12 sequence when that half-metal *female dog* taunts me. I took the oppurtunity of this thread to start a game once more, many thanks to you, I seriously thought I knew everything that there is to know about this game http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/bigthumb.gif Good to see a fellow deus ex fanatic ^^

ps did you play the sequal? Many people seem to hate it but it actually is quite rewarding.

I love replaying KOTR, and I still drang up my N64 for Ocirina of Time. Hmm... I think I'll go and play it now in fact.... https://forums.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/bigthumb.gif

https://forums.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/ht_bow.gif There's one other thing you might wanna know.

Spoiler Alert! Highlight to read. Remember the Rentons at the 'Ton? At the 'Ton hotel, second time through (when you get dropped off by Jock on the roof), he asks you for a gun to kill the gang leader (JoJo)? If you give him a gun (or a knife or something), he kills JoJo (with your help), and Sandra stays at home. If you don't give him anything, you do JoJo yourself, and Sandra Renton says to her dad: 'You wouldn't have shot anyonethank God for JC here I'm leaving

If she leaves, much later on at Vandenburg Gas station, she's with the two bums who give you the weapon mods and key down before you get up to the station itself. She says she was mugged and ended up there. Just something I found out once, really surprised me.
I played DX: IW demo. Hated it. No RPG, too much FPS. Too shallow.

I know that one yes. And you should really give DE:IW a try, when it is good it is GOOD. It is deus-ex lite, but it gets very interesting.

Due to picking up some sort of nasty spyware program that I could not get rid of, I finally had to perform a complete reformat and recovery of my system.

Of course being an HP OEM system I had to remove both the new sound and graphics cards that I had added and re-install the crap the came from the factory. Then re-install and re-configure the new cards plus my joystick.

Now I'm setting there with a clean system wondering what to install first.

Since I had been in the middle of a MTW campaign, and had copied the game save files, that was the first game I re-loaded---but then I thought--hey, I started in this hobby as a flight simmer, so I have to load at least one sim.

What was it?--IL-2, EAW, Janes WW II, CFS 2, Red Baron, or some space sim---Nope, I am proud to say that instead I loaded:

CRIMSON SKIES

What a stupidly fun and entertaining flight game. It's like the Indiana Jones of the skies.

Man, I wish they would port the sequel over to the PC, because I have vowed never to succumb to the evils of the console. Although with the price drops, I have been weakening my stance a bit lately.

I also loaded up the Shogun Warlord Edition since I haven't played it in well over a year.

I've heard so much good stuff about the new Aces of the Pacific mod for Silent Hunter II and the combo mod for Pirates of the Caribbean, I might just give them a shot too.

Heck---with all of this to do, I hope I don't forget about RTW and still have time for it. (Yeah, like that will happen---not)

List of most commonly replayed games:

1. Hearts of Iron: I'm a WWII fanatic, so any time I watch a WWII documentary I end up playing HOI.

2. Mech Warrior IV series: I've been fascinated with Mech's since the old Battle Tech games.

3. Dungeon Keeper 2: It's just too fun to be evil.

4. MTW: What can I say? It's just too unique to forget about.

5. Stars!: The level of micromanagement is a complete nightmare of fun ~;)

Obviously MTW I play a lot and is one of the most longlived games I have ever played. Usually with most games, I play them for a few weeks and that's it. But with MTW, apart from several months when I stopped, I have been playing it ever since it came out. However, it's the wonderful mods on this site that keep me playing it! :jumping:

Diablo 2. This game is so damn addictive! Again this is well supported with patches to keep me playing it; that and the fact that I play regularly with a friend. Multiplayer co-op is also a big pull.
