I just finished FarCry last night, and I would have to rank this impressive game in the top 2 or 3 FPS's I have ever played. (Bear in mind I have never played Halflife)

This is an FPS that you will not finish in a couple of evenings like Call of Duty or Max Payne, so at only $40 it is really a much better value.

I got my copy on sale at Sam's Club for only $34.96 which was even better.

The graphics are absoulutely superb, the effects and physics outstanding, and the A.I. is some of the best I have seen in such a game.

It is set on a series of tropical South Pacific jungled and mountainous islands, and the maps are huge. The water, the sky, the jungle, and the mountain vistas are just gorgeous and make you almost forget that you are playing a game. Many times I stopped playing the game and found myself just walking around like an awe struck tourist. Of course this kind of lolly-gagging will usually get you killed pretty quickly.

Without giving the plot away you are fighting lots of mercenaries working for an evil geneticist who has created some pretty nasty creatures that you also will eventually have to confront and deal with on many levels.

Besides the usual pistols, grenades, rifles, shotguns, machine guns, and rocket launchers you also get to use the crew mounted weapons while driving dune buggies, hummers, and patrol boats.

Another neat feature is that many times you can choose to hang glide from the mountain top over the various islands and jungle valleys to get from one point to another.

Also rather than a quick save feature, the game automatically saves for you at various stages of each of the many levels.

While some may not like this feature, it actually makes the game more challenging which in turn makes the game last longer. Believe me it works for this game.

One warning though--system requirements are pretty heavy if you want the eye candy. I had to take most of the effect settings down to medium or low on my 1.7 gig machine just to get decent frame rates.

I am in the process of ordering a new state of the art CPU, so I plan to play through this game again in all of it graphic glory when the new rig arrives.

Anyway if you have the system, I can highly recommend this game.

Cheers

I would be happy to have your current CPU. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif With only 1 Ghz and a PCI GeForce 4, my computer hacks up thick gobbets of blood and phlegm when playing UT2k4, although it is still playable.

Yeah I am actually proud of the Turkish guys who contributed to the development of that game. Farcry became something national here. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/cheers.gif

I thought Far Cry was overrated. Great looking game with some pretty mindless gameplay. I enjoyed the freedom offered by the outdoor maps and most of the interior levels until I reached the last two levels of the game. In those two levels Far Cry devolves into a mindless, close quarters sodomy-fest with in which ridiculous boss monsters and high level baddies bend you over repeatedly until you miraculously get past them thanking the gaming gods for delivering you from their clutches. Needless to say after the torment of the so-called final boss battle I used the cheats to get me through the actual final level. All that freedom and clever map design only to culminate in a mindless quicksave/quickload kill frenzy Talk about lazy game designers

Sorry that you were disappointed, and while I will also admit that the ending wasn't all that spectacular, the rest of the game more than made up for it.

I managed to get through the last two levels without any cheats although I will admit I was ready to throw in the towel a few times until I found the right strategy.

Since then I have heard a few more solutions that were even better than mine. One of the two best ones that I have heard about involved dumping extra weapons between the double doors before you open the last big door which in turn locks the inner door. The other one was that you push a chair in place keeping that inner door from closing permanently so they could go back for more ammo and weapons

Either way, I have to believe that the developers discovered these same solutions and purposely left them in the game. To me any game that will allow you the ability to beat it by thinking outside the box is a pretty inventive game and really not lazy level design at all.

In fact, all through the game there were many unique opportunities like this that allowed one a lot more ways that one to skin the proverbial cat--so to speak.

Cheers

P.S. just an additional note---with over 100 reviews at game ranking.com, the game has an average score of just over 90% while the individual rankings by players is 88%. T
Not to shabby for a $40 game.

That's got to be one of the most funny critics I've read about a game http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-laugh4.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-laugh4.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-laugh4.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-laugh4.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-laugh4.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-laugh4.gif
