it's funny how microsoft games are usually pretty interesting, but AoM is almost an exact copy of blizzard's warcraft 3.

anyone else played aom?

played it before.

game turned me off because of myth element.

I prefer the historical stuff and actually like AOK better.

all this was before MTW though. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

I prefer AOK over any of the new games of that style of strategy games, I am really tired of these new comepletely 3d zoomable games like AOM and Warcraft 3. I dunno why but they have just headed downhill from AOK and Warcraft 2 http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif

i liked the AoM format, however i liked AoK time frame and historical realism at least compared to the Mythology of AoM. imo, my ultimate game would be an AoM format (rotating map, graphics, etc) with the AoK time frame.

I'm not a big mythology fan so AOM wasn't my game.

I'm not a big mythology fan either, but i did have the best time playing Zeus - I'd rank that game among my top ten (mostly because of the cheesiness http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif )

One of my sons gave me AoM for Christmas. I like an RTS once in a while and this is a pretty good one. The god abilities are fun.

MS has done a nice job with their Age series. The production values are always high and they are well tested.

I dislike AoM because it is so rock-paper-scissors that I can't suspend disbelief. I don't care who you attack it with, an arrow is an arrow. It doesn't suddenly become a spit-ball just cause you attack an incorrect enemy.

AOM is one of my favourite strategy games. But I don't think it is a copy of Warcraft3.The most similar game to AOM is AOK(naturally).

well for a the usual RTS style of game, it's proving to be quite interesting. the campaign is way longer that i ever imagined.

Exactly my sentiments, it has lost balance of realism to gameplay. If you know what troops your opposition has you can outmaneuver them quite easily and effectively.

I don't agree... Age of Mythology was a shameless sequel to AoK... it had exactly the same gameplay, with new civilizations and spells thrown in for extra cheese on your average cheeseburger.

WarCraft III on the other hand, concentrates far more on micromanaging your troops and has elevated heros to a point where they are all-important; not just a useful addition to your army, not just a slightly stronger unit with (at times) a special attack. Microing your hero the right way, as well as troop positioning and micro techniques like surrounding and flanking your enemy are not present in AoM. The latter is just a counterfest extraordinaire...

well despite being a copy of whatever game (I haven't played AoK), I finished AoM, and it was okay. Although I had problems with it in the beginning, the script overcame them.
now I have the sequel, and it's turning out to be fun.

it's still reminds me of Warcraft, though http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

get the expansion you can have titans they take like 3 waves of my finest troops to bring them down http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/bigthumb.gif

Campaign isn't up to much, it took me less than a week to complete. Titans is better, although the actual Titans just make it a mad rush. About the only civ that can deal with them half well is Atlanteans IMO. Elevate lots of troops to hero status - them mounted javelin dudes will do because they can out-run the titan and keep picking on him.

I've found myself becoming very attached to Rise of Nations lately. Great fun, that game. It's almost like finding a midpoint between MTW and AoK with Empire Earth thrown in. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/bigthumb.gif

I agree... it seems that with all of these new 3d games with zooms that when you really do take the time to zoom in you notice more of the flaws and how some of the graphics seem terrible

for instance on some of these games you zoom in on a unit and just see the blocks that make up the form... or notice that the face or body motions, which from far away look superb, are really just made up a crude quick framing

Im not insulting any people who made these games, I think they did a great job on them and I enjoy alot of them, just leave the zoom out...

in response to liking AOM... I really didnt like it. Im not really sure what turned me off from it but I returned it a few days later.
