tornado hits melbourne (http://www.couriermail.news.com.au/common/story_page/0,5936,9800006%255E1702,00.html)

We have had a few here in brisbane too, one tore a 50 metre wide path of devastation through a graveyard and bushland, crossed a freeway 3 times winding back and forth,
from the air the relults looked like some drunken looney with a D9 cat simply could not drive straight...

- it is very rare for people to actually get hurt, and we dont seem to see them to the same immense size the USA seems to get...
must have something to do with the USA always has to have the biggest and best heh?

that's cause a lot of them start in texas ;)

we've had two come through here, close enough to hear, since i've lived here. one came up the river at treetop level. it was like a giant lawn mower had just floated over the bank and mowed all the trees.

the other was more recent and a LOT more powerful. trees uprooted everywhere. power lines down. and, in one odd case, it took a round, steel grain bin (holds about 10,000 bushels of corn) and lifted the entire thing up into the air and scattered steel for miles. the odd part was that it left all the grain right where it had been. when they came back after the storm to clean up, there were only a few bushels of corn that were missing, but every piece of steel was gone.

We get tornadoes here in Maryland too. They are uncommon but not unknown. We get more watches and warnings than actual twisters. Three years ago one ripped through the University of Maryland campus tearing things up and killing a couple of people. My son saw a car go right past his 8th floor dorm window as the funnel passed. He said he was too mesmerized by the awesome sight and sound to flee. Which just goes to prove that he in fact has no more sense than his old man.

barocca, do you get many violent thunder storms in Brisbane? The commom summer storm here in the states is wicked with lots of lighting, high winds and hail.

storms,
we had one a few months back that took down the power grid for most of brisbane, it took 3 days for us to get electricity back here
- it was scorching hot and ice sales went through the roof while people tried to save the contents of their freezers,
i am told the bosses at the ice works did not get the chance to call the workers in for extra shifts, they just turned up at work of their own accord,
- they needed ice for their freezers, so they figured the rest of brissie would as well...

that storm also took out both my computers when lightning hit the pay tv cable, which also carries internet and the strike fried a cable modem, hub and both my computers, the ancient 586 that is my firewall was not harmed, mind you that old dinosaur has had all sorts of things happen to it - including one power supply that actually exploded inside the case - and it still trundles along,

we get plenty of heavy storms but, luckily, we dont get too many of that intensity, (1 or 2 a month and ONLY during storm season - decmeber to march).
During storm season we get 3 to 4 storms a week.
