I know there are a lot of young members and generally the langauge is not too bad but there was a thread during and after the English match that was waaaaaaaaay tooooooo strong. I know between adults it's acceptable but all threads are open for younger members to read. There is no need for the extent of profanity that I witnessed.

frogbeastegg

It's not exactly a case of certain swearwords that you can't use, more that there should be no swearing at all, however mild you may consider it. The forum rules say no vulgar, profane, or sexually oriented language. I'll quote something A. Saturnus said in the tavern It´s not enough to put a * in a word to make it ok. Swearing, however hinted or alluded should not happen.

As YAKOBU said there are young members, and there are parents whose children may read over their shoulder; while they may not mind swearing themselves they may not want their children exposed to it, so please be considerate.

Does that mean we can still refer to the seedy undertones that run through all disney films or kill Bambi.

Pinned topics tend to get ignored, especially if there is a collection of them. Hmm, time for a bit of reorganisation...

You can kill Bambi as long as you kill him quickly without suffering (in the case of Mickey Mouse you can leave the rat to suffer if you want), don't swear in the process, and make enough venison pie for everyone in the arena, and provide something as an alternative for the vegetarians. Trophy kills are wasteful.

Right time for a disney Barbecue.
Venison steaks.
Pumba Ribs in hot and spicy source
Timon on a spit.
Mickey and Minnie mouse shall provide the entertainment accompanied by 20 very large very hungy cats.
Peking Donald Duck with pancakes.
Goofy Burgers.
Snow White and the seven Dwarfs will be entered for the Monty Python stupid twits 2004, hopes are high that all will succeed this year and kill themselves.

And for the vegetarians we will have specialty quorn burgers and salads etc.

I've been a bit of a lurker since around RTW came out and have come to enjoy the personalities of the people on this forum as well as the great ideas that show up. RTW definitely needs improving and a lot of that has come from the fans here and elsewhere.

Anyway, I suppose I shouldn't be raising an issue in my first post, or second can't remember, on this forum, but I thought why not. So here it is.

First off I agree with the org's step as necessary, but I've never really understood the double standard with parents cussing and not wanting their kids to. Is it something to do with the kids not knowing the proper context, or is their some power in the words that parents don't think their kids can handle? I suppose it's something to do with the kids not fully knowing what the words mean or what they can do. However, the part that always gave me pause for thought was that parents consider it improper for their kids to cuss but when they become older it's acceptable. I don't see this as an attempt to raise kids who won't cuss, in which case leading by example is a big help, but as an attempt by some to maintain a standard they don't understand, but think should be maintained. A standard they gave up for themselves in their mid teens if not earlier.

I, myself, am not against cussing. I would by a hypocrite if I said I never cuss, but I'm not really proud of it nor do I consider it just a part of who I am. I don't condone people, children or elders, when they cuss. However, I do understand that there are some cultural norms that say do not cuss in front of children and I accept them as right. Still when you think about it it doesn’t really make sense. The real danger of cussing is when it's used to harm. In some cases it can just be an adverb. But if it bothers someone when I cuss I won't do it. It's not really a necessary part of life.

I agree with the org's policy, because sometimes you just have to sacrifice a silly and really pointless right, such as the right to cuss, in respect of what is probably a more deeply held right and belief, sometimes religious and sometimes not. You may not think there is nothing wrong with cussing, and you may by right in your own right, but offending a person just because you think you should have the right to do anything you want is rather rotten. And it you think the org is just doing this in case, guess again. The reason they are probably doing it is because someone or more likely someones complained.

Sorry, about the dissertation. I had a lot to say and it's a complicated issue. I'll probably be flamed for this, but I won't fall to calling you stupid or unwilling to accept someone else’s point of view. Even the people who think they should be able to cuss do have a point.

Nice rezz elvis. You're lucky mods don't punish rezzing around here. :shifty:

I find the thought of children not cussing quite amusing, since wherever I've been the kids have been the most foulmouthed people around. Grownups don't swear unles they really have to or want to, while children just repeat the same dirty words over and over again. I know I did.:jester:

The point is though: children more often swear more then adults, so to say that this rule is somehow protecting the innocence of children is completely false. Ask any child above 6 if they know all the 4-letter swears and they will recite them all by heart. It's really quite surprising to hear but it's very common.

Maybe the Mods can send out an e-mail to everyone? Didn't we have to give them an e-mail address when we signed up?

Is there a meaning to frog-beast-egg? It's a good name.

frogbeastegg
06-23-2005, 17:04
Yes, I was serious and still am. It's org policy, and has been right from day 1, so far as I recall. The majority of patrons don't want to read swearing, for a variety of valid reasons. This topic is a hangover from an old, cross forum announcement. Discussion on the necessity of the policy, or complaints about it, belong over in the watchtower.

HunkinElvis, frogbeastegg comes from the game Thief: The Dark Project, an absolute masterpiece that everyone should go and play NOW! There were these little amphibian critters roaming around a few of the levels; they were called frog beasts. If hit or provoked into defending their territory they exploded. They were fast, deadly, and so silly they were funny. Frog beasts hatched from eggs, and occasionally you found those eggs lying around for collection. You could use them rather like grenades, tossing them to the ground near an enemy and hoping the frog beast went after the AI character, not you.

I had a desperate lack of inspiration when choosing my first internet screen name. I flicked through my copy of the Thief book in the hopes of gaining an idea, and it opened to the frog beast egg entry. This also explains the lack of a capital at the start of my name; I didn't automatically capitalise it because it didn't feel much like a name back then. It only dawned on me a few months later that there should be a capital. From inauspicious beginnings the name has really taken off and proven both versatile and full of comic potential; I love it.

HunkinElvis

Those are funny critters. Luring an AI to fight another AI is fun. I have done that in other games. I just relax and ridicule them. ~D
