I tune in just now and go to the forums, dodging the pop-ups on the main site. However, as soon as I entered, I see an add banner at the bottom of the screen and pop-ups in between forum clicks http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/angry.gif Is it just me, or hasn't the forum been clear of ads for most of its history? Will the ads stay from now on?

i don't get the popups.
but if they have to have the banners, to keep it is the way it is now.

thanks, dessa

I'm sure Tosa-sama has his reasons. Probably involves raising some cash for an upgrade or something.

I get the ads too but i havent noticed it before you mentioned it so it doesnt really cause me any trouble i guess.
If the .org covers some expenses this way they are welcome , i ll even click on them. We dont want Tosa selling any more poor moderators to slavery to pay for the expenses. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Hello,

The banner ads are a necessary thing.

This server is on a free host and consumes quite some of the server. The site has grown and was moved to a better server several months ago. The performance improved a lot, but it still grows and it's pushing the limits again.

When a domain shares a server with other sites, it's running on a virtual server. Contrary to a dedicated one, which has only one site on a server.

Commercial hosts put anywhere between 70 and 300 sites on one server. There are pseudo dedicated servers which have less sites/machine. Pricing is much higher then.

This site share the server with only 10 other sites and the others are pretty low traffic at the moment. We're pseudo dedicated and everything costs money.

The Takiyama clan has a forum similar to this one. The host is a fully commercial one and pretty decent (70 sites/machine and OC-192, OC-3 connection). The forum is mostly used by only a handful of people, max users online at the same time is 6, and the entire database would fit on a few floppies. This one has 100's if not 1,000's of users a day, 30-100 active at any time of the day, 122 max online, 300 times more posts (more impressive ones too) and the database is somewhere near 400 mb (another 300+ for the archives). It still feels more responsive than the Takiyama one though. Purchasing a similar service would cost a bit. There will probably still be banners to cover the cost then.

our host did not at first require banners on the forum.
now they do, we are not really happy about it, but seeing they pay for our space and bandwidth we cant really complain,

trying to host this place on a commercial server would cost a bundle, which none of the staff can afford to pay,,

the org site is well over 4Gig in size including all downloads and bandwidth consumption would almost definately be double that per month,

so until one of the staff wins the lotto, or the org gets a patron who leaves their entire fortune to the site we will (most likely) stay on this free host

I'll put the org in my will but if i die tomorrow it wouldn't get much but my debt http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I don't mind the banners so much as the pop-up ads, and they are only annoying at work where I can't install software to prevent them.

Hi all

I don't mind the banners if it helps the .org to finance itself.
Let's watch out for them and find out what target group we are in. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif
Saw Weight Watchers a few time. Do they assume we're all fat geeks with nothing to do but eating junk and drinking softdrinks? http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/barrel.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-jester.gif

I don't mind the banners. I don't get the pop-ups because I don't go through the mainpage of the ORG. I've got a link directly to the guild on my desktop http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

does it help if we click on the banners?

im not getting any popups, or even any indication of them being blocked. however, i do see the banners, not taht i care, i never look at them anyways, and at the bottom of the page, they are unobtrusive. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

I see banners, but there's something wrong with them, as they only show some blue writing claiming that "Internet Explorer couldn't link to the page you requested".
That's strange...

Hello,

I wonder where those come from, I had one yesterday too. Not sure whether it popped up by itself or because I accidentely clicked something. It was a tiny window for me, size of a big stamp.

Lehesu

Those are exactly the pop-ups. They ask me to fill a survey for 18+ year olds. The pop-up is small and happens only rarely.

TosaInu

18+ ? You mean those intrusive ones about income and such?

hmmm there are no ads or banners when you have it in the sword dojo skin http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif they seem to be limited to the guild skin.

I have also had the pop ups about filling somethign in 18+

I don't really mind having the banners, in fact I don;t think anyone minds if it helps the org survive.

Lehesu

I was just worried about pop-ups. They don't happen often though, so life is good. I don't know what the pop-up was about; something about 18 year olds and than I just hit X.

Starting on Sept. users who want to access this forum will first need to have Gatorware installed (the download installs a critical plug-in which the Org board will look for before allowing you to read and post.)

We'll have the appropriate link and news on the mainpage once things get fully ironed out.

I'm relived http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-smile.gif. The thought of having to install Gtaor of BonziBuddy worries me no end. But if teh forums do require it in the future (probably unlikely), i'll be leaving.
