The Pokemon games for GBA, even though they're Pokemon, are excellent RPGs and definitely one of the top. I'd have to say KOTOR takes the cake as my favorite though. I love games that really immerse me in the storyline and KOTOR seemed to accomplish that.

Does anyone know of any other games with really incredible storylines that make the game good?

I never got into Arcanum.

KOTOR and BG SUCK
GOT IT SUCK
SUCK SUCK SUCK

Pokemon Ruby and Saphire are great games.

But nothing compared to the grandaddy of them all.

ELDERSCROLLS 3: MORROWIND

Yeah, Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind wins it hands down. you can't beat it for its sense of freedom and open world (well, apart from mmorpg's and I dont bother with them). Shame we cant see more RPG's like this. Bit of an RPG drought on at the moment, don't you think?

Some of my favorites are:

Elder Scrolls 3
Gothic II

and in a way I like HoMM 3 as well, maybe not too RPGish, but still the mood in that game is GREAT, plus you have a hero and artifacts = rpg :p

Most RPGs nowadays are developed for the MMORPG market.

As far as good RPGs go anything from Black Isle would apply But by far the RPG experience I had so far was Planscape Torment (it didnt give you the freedom of Arcanum or Morrowind but nimmersed you in the best rpg story ever written) closely followed by the classic Fallout.
On Console any of the square stuff, if you like anime.

Amother Classic RPG would be the realy ancient Battletech RPG were you could capture Mechs and fight both with infantry and the Mechs you possesed.

Though Gladíus hardly qualifies for an RPG its also one of my favorites.
Sadly the Medival DnD/LOTR Fantasy kind of RPG is still the standard in both offline and online RPG.
It would be realy intteresting if a publisher would take up the ancient time of the Greeks and Romans and create an RPG in this theme

Having just replayed both baldurs gate games + expansions I would have to say Baldurs gate.
It has superb storyline well worked battles and replayability.
Although I have to say that I am sometimes dragged back to zelda OoT.
MorrowWind is very good.

Planescape: Torment is my favourite. The story is a work of art and wouldn't work in any non-interactive format(book, movie) as effectively. It's not too lacking in other categories either; great setting, excellent sound and music, fine art (though low-resolution...) and decent rp mechanics. The system _could_ be better, but that's nitpicking. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/tongue.gif

Fallouts score points with their immersive and original setting. I like the rp mechanics too.

Morrowind has a well-executed world, though the npcs are a bit bland.

Gothic 2 is a good game and has a nice laid-back, campy atmosphere.

BG2 and KotoR are in the same category in my book, both good games all round.

Btw, anybody here played Spiderweb's Avernum series? I just reinstalled Avernum 3 the other day. IMO, they are a good example how a good RPG doesn't need to have the bells and whistles to be involving (although they don't hurt either, of course).

Betrayal at Krondor owns anything else. best RPG ever. no question. end of story.

Betrayal at Krondor is the absolute best when it comes to both gameplay and story, the two most important elements in any RPG.

Morrowind is very good, as is Gladius.

Gladius is a very fine game, but it is more a strategiegame then a rpg. The best pure rpg would have to be Planescape:torment or Fallout 2, but I tend to like hybrids like System Shock 2 and Deus ex better

I guess I would have to go with Fallout 2. The setting is brilliantly evocative. The character creation and development system is about the best in any game - giving freedom, choices and rewards. The combat is fun in an OTT way. The quests were often inventive and interesting. Some of the character you meet are fun, while some of the monsters or enemies are worthy adversaries. There is a fine epic story arc. It has a lot of non-linearity. There is genuine freedom to role-play and make moral decisions that impact on the game world for better or worse.

Baldurs Gate 2 has many similar virtues and could be my number 2.

System Shock 2 is very different kind of game but also a competitor, a visceral experience that I suspect will remain vivid all of my life.

Ok here it goes:

1) Baldur's gate 2 : Simply the best , the atmoshpere , the storyline , the character interactions. Even its annoying aspects were masterfully implemented ( Jan Jansen who wont shut up for example). Nothing i played compares to it and i still remember the feeleing of killing my first Dragon. Great expansion as well.

2) Phantasy Star 4 : Its an old ( 1994) game for Sega Mega Drive. Amazing battles for the time. Really nice storyline , simple well made pixel graphics. Its a game i ll play over and over again everytime i want to have fun but not tire my mind with complicated games.

3) Fallout 1: Personally i prefer it that Fallout 2 since its most balanced ( with fallout 2 i always seem to struggle until mid way and then it is a piece fo cake). Innovative game , nice storyline , great battles, Dogmeat. What else can you ask? Its not number one because of its bugs

4) Morrowind: It tooks me a month of slaving in front of the PC for 10 hours a day ( missing all my lectures ) to finish this behemoth of a game. Amazing looks and atmosphere , i ve spent ages just looking at the sky ,the moon the stars or the landscape in general. However i m a fan of simple graphics and great storyline so i prefer the 2D looks of BG and Fallout than the 3D orld of morrowind ( call me weird). What spoils it for me is that the leveling system is imbalanced. The game is challenging in the beginning but by the end , provided you did most quests, your character gets practically invulnerable (my character's health regenerating custom-made armor was giving me 12 HP health regeneration , the Boss was a piece of cake). Luckily Bloodmoon was balanced but both expansions were awfully short compared to the original...

5) Shinning force 2: I love the battle system of this old 1993 game. You control about 12 characters in total and the game has a turn based chess-like battle system. I still play it from tiem to time

6) B.G 1

7) Fallout 2

I'd have to say that KOTOR is my favorite by far. Can't wait for no. 2 to come out.

Morrowind with its expansions are a close second.

Icewind Dale 2 comes third

I'm playing Lionheart at the moment. I am determined to complete it although it does have some faults.

My favourites are Morrowind, System Shock 2 and Fallout 2. I even like the classic 'fantasy' feel to Dungeon Siege, but that is much more point and click as fast as possible.

Morrowind would have to be the best though, its the biggest and has the most variety and things to do or aim for. And the amount of mods there are is astounding.

There are some very good mods out for morrowind. With some of the mods then morrowind is a better game than KOTOR. I was only thinking of straight out of the box. KOTOR is the better game than i think. Mainly because it has a better storyline in my opinion.

Also you should get the expansions (if you can't afford both i'd recommend bloodmoon).

Bloodmoon has a lot more to do than tribunal. If you want details bout it read the elder scrolls thread

I only got tribunal a little while ago and have installed it etc.

But how do i access the extras? Is it a point on the map or only once you've completed the main story (i have no saves of this http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif)

Extras? I'm guessing that you mean the contents of the Tribunal and Bloodmoon expansions.

Spoiler Alert! Highlight to read. Tribunal: after installing this one, when you rest you will be attacked by an assassin. It may not happen the first time, or the second, but it will happen soon enough. Report this to a town guard and he will direct you to visit some Imperial in Ebonheart, directly west of Vivec. He'll tell you what to do.

Bloodmoon: any citizen will tell you that they've heard of Solstheim, and that it is a terrible place. They'll also inform you that you can catch a boat there from Khuul, in the far north-west of Vvardenfell.[/QUOTE]

You don't need to have completed the main story, but it is damn good idea, as otherwise you just won't be able to cope with the monsters the expansions will throw at you.

Enjoy

A.

Nah, I always do bloodmoon main quest before the main main quest. But then of course the main quest is ruined for you as it sooooooo soooooo sooooo much worse than the bloodmoon quest

Deffinetly KoTR ( Knights of the Old Republic). Never been much of an RPG fan (not much there on XBOX), and I have always loved Star Wars. The hack and slash style of RPG never really did it for me.

The Grand List Of Console Role Playing Game Clichés (http://project-apollo.net/text/rpg.html) I found that rather amusing; so many of the RPGs I have played and enjoyed are packed full to exploding with these cliches.
