a war with france from the start of the game ended with the battlefield death of the king of france and the kingdom collapsed.
during the collapsed period of time i managed to gain ile de france.

then france reappeared and i took lorraine and champaign off them.
then the king died.

1780-King Bernaerd I takes the thrown.

1781-Champagne falls to General McDonald.

1785-Prince Boeyken turns 16.

1788-Prince Boeyken invades Normandy and the French commander retreats to Rouen Castle.

1790-Normandy falls and Prince Bartolmeus turns 16.

1792-King Bernaerd I attacks Anjou.
210 Dutch vs. 305 French
King Bernaerd vs Prince Loius

The French force consisted of 200 line infantry, 100 militia, and the Princes escort. While outnumbered Dutvh forces brought a battery of 4 pounders. 220 French were killed by cannons and there was no melee or skirmish. French forces retreated.

1793-Anjou is comepletely destroyed save the castle. Anjou would have a required a sizable garrison which a cash strapped Dutch Army could not afford.

French attacked Friesland with 1032 men led by Lord St. Cyr. Defending Friesland was Lord Poniatowski and 1173 Dutch soldiers. The Dutch held a large advantage in artillery with 3 full batteries compared to the half battery the French brought. The french advatage lay in cavalry which was unable to deal with the artillery barrages.

Dutch forces arrayed in 2 lines with standard line infantry forming the first line. The second line was formed by line infantry flanked on the left by Dutch Foot Guards and on the right by grenadiers. Off in the woods 3 grenadier batallions were in hiding they participated in a initial skirmish with French hussars. The Hussars were defeated in a matter of seconds.

The rest of the French force marched into the artillery fires of Dutch cannon. Their bravery was remarkable but proved futile. Their lines engaged the Dutch first line and the two lines shot each other. The French lines were stretched to far back though and were ineffective.

The only French success was managed by their cavalry. French heavy cavalry had manuevered themselves to the Dutch left and before the first line could respond the left most batallion was attacked. After suffering some losses to French guns and cavalry charge in their flank the batallion routed but, the Dutch Foot Guards managed to save the day and engaged the French cavalry. At the same time French and Dutch hussars fought on the left. The Dutch siffered heavy casualties 17 dead but routed the French hussars. With their cavalry routed the French line infantry fled the field. With only 33 cavalry left (Lord Poniatowski led 50 Dragoons) the Dutch did not pursue.

Overall it was a stunning victory for Lord Poniatowski losing only 89 men (most came from 1 batallion) and killing 681 and capturing 4. The victory was made possible by artillery without artillery the French would have been able to take advatage of Lord Poniatowski's error in exposing the left flank on the first line.

1794-Prince Beydijn turns 16 and a famine occirs in Normandy.

1795-French accept a ceasefire.

1796-Alliance with French signed and, all three heirs become married. 2 were married to French Princesses in 1790-1792 and one married a Austrian Princess in1796.

1797-French break alliance by attacking a Dutch vessel in English Channel. Upon hearing the news King Bernaerd suffers a heart attack.

King Bernaerd I dies at 56 and King Boeyken I is crowned.

Letter to King Boeyken I

December 31st, 1797

Unfortunately due to the French Wars [really just a long stalemate and naval war] I was unable to build a sizable Navy. Most of the time I was unable to build infrastructure due to financial constraints. The Dutch economy has never run at a defecit but, it has become clear that we will not be able to become a great trading power without first becoming a military power. The French simply will not allow us to live in peace. To this end it will become necessary to defeat the French nation.

I've never believed that war was the answer and strived my whole reign to end the war. When I finally do end the war the French stab me in the back and, now I'm writing from my death bed My son I hate no man alive but, let it be known, I hate the French

Your Father,
Baernaerd

BTW, can somebody tell me how to convert images so I can view them?

Thanks,
Billman
