Just got back from Kansai, Nagoya, and Hida. I visited Himeji, Hikone, Nagoya, and Osaka castles for the first time.

I also saw Sekigahara. It went by me at 300kmh as I glanced out the window of the Shinkansen. Look fast!!!

Himeji had weapon racks full of teppo and yari. It was the first time I saw yari in person. The shafts were thicker than I thought.

Another fascinating thing for me was the large model depicting Himeji and its surrounding town in the 17th Century.

Hiei-zan was stunning, too. It was sad to think about Oda Nobunaga burning the place down. The monks were preparing for shogatsu.

Note: It was nice to see that the Japanese were celebrating the turn of the century/millenium this year, rather than last year. Americans have trouble counting to 2000.

Cool Tachikaze.

I too want to go visit and may manage to convince my parents to let me go during the World cup in 2002. (I don't live with my parents, but its damn expensive to go on a trip and my family is somewhat a soccer family.... as much as you can expect one to be in the US that is)

Draksen,
I only speak Japanese phrases, like "Where is the mizu shobai?" "This shabu-shabu is tasty" and "When is Crayon Shin-chan on?". Real conversation leaves me behind. I love learning the language, so someday I hope to get to a conversational level.

Zen-Blade,
Japan is quite expensive. My parents pitched in $200 as a Christmas present to help me.

I recommend a trip to Japan for anyone. This was my fourth trip, but only my first to Honshu. My previous ones were to Hokkaido, which is naturally the most beautiful area, but is almost devoid of historical stuff.

The castles, temples, and shrines are really great. I bought a model of Himeji-jo.

Thats what I was planning on doing as well to go to Japan for the World Cup. Just hope that Australia gets in but itr would be a bit hard for a student to get over there. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

Its too tempting to make some comment about Austrailia's chances of making it to the World Cup but I won't. But I do agree with you that Japan is probably top of my list in places to visit, but distance and therefore the cost puts me off. There's just something about the place that draws me to it.

They have a better chance of gewtting there than England Sama. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

They only have to beat the 4th or 5th best African nation which will probably be Chile or Paraguay or something like that.
