Just saw Kodô at UCLA. Great stuff; my first time seeing/hearing them in person.
Taiko makes a good background score for Shogun: TW, by the way. But Kodô is not the best for that because their music doesn't usually have a "military" feel http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif . Most other taiko is appropriate, though.
Ensemble performance taiko only goes back to the 1950s, but taiko drums were used in battle (among other, more-peaceful, events). They were used for signaling and morale. Performances today that draw on classical rhythms have the right feel for a "soundtrack" for Shogun.
I'm looking for a taiko group in San Diego, but there are only two. And I would have to join a Buddhist church to participate. San Francisco is the mecca for American taiko.
Any other taiko fans out there?
