Just saw Kodô at UCLA. Great stuff; my first time seeing/hearing them in person.

Taiko makes a good background score for Shogun: TW, by the way. But Kodô is not the best for that because their music doesn't usually have a "military" feel http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif . Most other taiko is appropriate, though.

Ensemble performance taiko only goes back to the 1950s, but taiko drums were used in battle (among other, more-peaceful, events). They were used for signaling and morale. Performances today that draw on classical rhythms have the right feel for a "soundtrack" for Shogun.

I'm looking for a taiko group in San Diego, but there are only two. And I would have to join a Buddhist church to participate. San Francisco is the mecca for American taiko.

Any other taiko fans out there?

I have always been interested in Japanese music, but have never heard Taiko before, sorry.

I know only Koto and Shamisen music
(you know, Sakura Sakura...)

And I don't know for Taiko, but for Koto music, the first time I have heard it, it was very... "strange".
I can't say that I liked.
In fact, it becomes a good music for me after 3 or 4 "tries"...
My ears are may be too European.

Hiroshima is a pretty neat modern-era jazz band. They have both a koto player and a taiko drummer. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/wink.gif

The music is hardly traditional Japanese, though. It's very much a fusion between the traditional Japanese and more typical Western music styles, with Jazz theory as a basis. Which is interesting enough in itself, of course, but just maybe not something a Shogun player looking for classical Japanese music would really want. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif
