I've noticed a method of improving the Phalanx "Collision" effect in battle noted by the ancient historians. Halve the attack value of the spear and give the weapon an area effect. The result is that the spears knock back the enemy troops allowing the Phalanx to step i.e push forward into the enemy ranks. A counter to this is to use loose formation and then envelop.
