More info may be needed: are asking about "Kanji" (ideographs mainly borrowed from Chinese); "Hiragana" (phonetics for Japanese words) or "Katakana" (phonetics for words borrowed from other languages)

???
Start here: http://www.kanji.org/kanji/japanese/writing/outline.htm
and here http://www.joyo96.org/
and if you are really serious go here: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0804820368/joyo96/103-0266873-7427805

(Caveat: I am not an authority. These are simply the results from a quick google search for "japanese kanji chart" or "japanese kana chart". Native speakers or language scholars invited to chime in with better references.)

Or maybe he means mon (family crests).

OK... if you mean "mon", here is a fascinating page full of various "mon" ...
all from the official list of "boryokudan" or criminal gangs: http://www1a.mesh.ne.jp/BOUTSUI/english/e-bou1/e-3.htm http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

...I know, I know... probably not what you had in mind... http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/wink.gif

How about "Japanese Family Crests" at http://www.netpersons.co.jp/kamon/

If you guys want to see a complete list of the flags for Takeda and Uesugi (including all major retainers' flags), check this out:

"...the best..." ??? Don't leave us hanging.
Which did you want: how to read/write, or the "mon"? When you said "symbols" and "what they mean" I got the idea at first that you were looking for an on-line dictionary. But after Tachikaze pointing pointed it out, asking about "mon" was also possible. Come clean... which?

cheers.

Koga -- Excellent resource! I had seen that page long ago and somehow lost my reference. ( I used to paint 25mm samurai myself, but my painting skills were not up to the task of doing large numbers of sashimono. I did a very few banner carriers with some made-up stuff, but this reference is great.)

...another good reference for "mon" stuff: http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Garage/4464/Kamon1.html

Do it yourself version: go to www.google.com (http://www.google.com) and search for "japanese family crest mon kamon"
