After sorting a lot of things out, the 'Samurai Archives' is back on-line (as mentioned elsewhere on the forum a while back). The Archives can now be reached at...

Thanks Seal,I wondered what had happened to it.

FWSeal, Those Achives answered a LOT of questions. I won't harass you as much now http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/wink.gif

You have some fantastic Battle scroll and I have a question about them (just one). I noticed something yellowish in the second Battle scroll for Kawanakajima coming out of the right side (kenshin's I think), is it smoke ? It looks like troop-produced smoke and, if so, it would be amazing to have this in the game.

BTW my favorite Battle scroll is Nagashino but do you have (okay, 2nd question http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif )the receiving end of the battle scroll ? It looks like there is another part at the right side (Takeda's).

We do have the 'Takeda' side of the scroll, and just haven't gotten around to posting it - and we really ought to.
To be honest, I'm not sure about the haze in the Kawanakajima scroll. My guess is that it represents the morning mists that were still lingering on the Hachiman Field when the battle began.

Thinking about the Archives, I do wish I had more time to spend on it. I also wish we had had a more detailed plan for the development of the page. Basically, the idea was hatched and, as time permited, we added new stuff here and there. This ad hoc composition is telling in the quality of writing in some of the earlier pieces, and in the generally chaotic (to be blunt) nature of the page itself. I think we bit off more than men with wives, jobs, (and, in my case, a baby) could hope to chew in anything like a year or even two years. For example, we've toyed with the idea of rebuilding the page and giving it a more compact, integrated feel - but simply haven't had anything approaching an opportunity to do it. Also, as anyone with a website probably knows, the rewards for all of your efforts are pretty intangible. Sometimes the punishments seem greater http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/wink.gif We reached a point where our associated forum had devolved into cat-fighting (my advice to anyone with a forum relating to the samurai - never include a Modern Japan section; you're just asking for trouble) and every other e-mail was 'why don't you have this? Why aren't there more kewl samurai pics? Where is all the info on Oda Nobunaga? Can you write my paper for me?' I mean, its funny thinking about that now, but, at time, the business really got on my nerves. It might also explain why I just wasn't up to snuff as a moderator here - Zen seems to have a lot more patience http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif
Oh well, just felt like babbling for a bit...

FWseal, you're just like a cook: Forever unpleased about his meal even if all your 35 guests cannot get enough. You know the type: "it's too/not enough salty, I should've cooked it at 312.5 instead of 312 degrees...".

You have a great site, people forget the amount of work that took to build such a site. When it is free, people still expect
more and forget to say little things like "thank you".

Well THANK YOU, I wish my history teachers would have been as devoted as you.

Great stuff, FWSeal-san. As we're on the subject of battle scrolls, have you ever seen the entire Mongol Invasion Scroll (Moko Shurai Ekotoba) reproduced anywhere? The most I've ever seen is in a book called 'Japan, A History in Art' by Bradley Smith.

In fact I would be interested in knowing about *any* entire scroll covering the 11th-14th Cent wars reproduced in books.

Cheers

Great to have it back, and nothing to appologize about, worried some the other day when couldn't pull it up.

Seconding grim's comments.

Especially like the maps in there, helps to put it all together.

Used it to find out about who Koriki Kiyonaga really was when he became pretty legendary in one of my campaigns.

Thanks, guys!
We're in the process of (finally) adding some new sections and solid info, including sengoku daimyo chronolgies (important events in the 16th Century for the Takeda, Oda, etc...) and a major overhaul of the samurai registry (for about the past year we've been tossing out any information derived from english sources in favor of Japanese material. Hopefully, we'll be ready to post the results by the end of the month).

Here is where you can apparently find the entire Mongol invasion scroll - problem is, I have no idea where you can find the book...

Wow! Thanks, Mr West http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

Found it at: http://www.einaudi.cornell.edu/bookstore/eap/item.asp?id=44

The entire scroll plus all the text translated. Author contends that the Japanese defenders didn't need the 'kamikaze' to defeat the Mongols so may be quite controversial...

Luckily they ship to the UK so have put in my order. Isn't the Internet a wonderful thing?

Cheers,
Mike

Just for everyone's info, I've finally uploaded what I think amounts to the first real update in a number of months to the Samurai Archives. A 'Clan-specific' timeline has been added. For the moment it just includes the Mori, Sanada, and Takeda, but an Oda timeline is in process - and more info will be added to the existing ones, as well.
I've been able to dig up a fair amount of new info on Shingen's actions prior to his many contests with Kenshin, and on the coming Oda timeline I've dug up some interesting info on the daily movements of Imagawa Yoshimoto leading up to Okehazama. F.W. Seal is responsible for verifying the dates, so if anything is too far off, blame him http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/wink.gif
Thanks for the comments, we definately appreciate it, and if it wasn't for the 'time-poverty' caused by school, work, and family, I think we'd have quite a bit more done - and that damn book finished, too! http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/wink.gif
The homepage URL is http://www.samurai-archives.com - just look for the 'clan-specific timelines' link under the 'chronology' section.

Also, on another topic, if anyone is interested, it is now possible to order books internationaly from amazon.com japan - the shipping rate is 1500 yen to the USA (somewhere around 12$), so all those Gakken history books are now available. You don't necesarily need to be able to read Japanese, but it helps. Basicaly the process is the same as for the english version of amazon.com - just make sure you click the 'international' button, and fill out your address, credit card info, etc. Shipping apparently takes 3 - 4 weeks.

Yagyu Jubeï:

I do not know if your asking me but if you are, I could not do it since 1) I post through a public cpu and 2) I don't know the Yagyu Mon. (but I'm reading Musashi right now and he encounters the Yagyu clan so maybe there is a hint of their Mon in there... I'll keep you inform if I find anything interesting).

thanks...I am asking if somebody from the samurai archives could send it to me....I have found it in the samurai archives. It is located on this page
http://www.samurai-archives.com/crest7.html
..but the only way to copy it is if I copy the entire page and then crop....resolution is terrible....It isn't in the Musashi book...Great book though! I subscribe to the only English Language Kendo magazine and in the next installment they will have an article by the premier Musashi historian....can't wait to read the real deal......

Actually, all you have to do is go to File>save as, and then save the page (and associated pics) to your harddrive. you just can't right click. that's it.

CEWESTSAN,
I did that m8....but the mon gets so pixalized that it is worthless to me http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/frown.gif

I copied the whole page and then cropped it, but it looked pretty bad...any other ideas? or do you know another place to find it?
