This is the first of a series of weekly newsposts, previewing some units and factions of the Chivalry Total War mod. And yes this idea is a shameless copy of Europa Barbarorum's newsposts but they forgot to register their copyright ;)

The mod and us:

The Chivalry Total War mod brings the medieval theme to RTW, covering almost the same time period as MTW: from 1071 till 1453. Although the mods first priority is an enjoyable multiplayer experience, it will also feature a number of singleplayer campaign and lots of histrical battles. Our main goal is to combine the strategic and realistic combat from MTW with the more flexible RTW engine.

The mod is made by a small team compared to some other mods, but it is progressing steadily none the less. We are currently working on a new beta version containing all early era units of all available factions.

Our official forum (http://www.stratcommandcenter.com/forums/index.php?showforum=40) is hosted at SCC just like our official website (http://www.stratcommandcenter.com/chivalry) (which really needs an update)

Faction(s):
The Byzantine Empire

The heavy cavalry of the Roman Empire (Rhomaioi Kataphraktoi) came from both the thematic and tagmatic soldiers and were often either nobility or 'sponsored' soldiers. Often, the interior themes of the Empire did not need to call up all their soldiers for war. So many would band together into groups of five and 'sponsor' the fifth soldier, effectively spending most of their income on this man's armor and equipment, effectively freeing them from duty and creating a class of heavy cavalry. They are armed with a suit of composite lamellar armor (layer of small scales, a layer of padding, and then a layer of chain) that allows them mobility and protection at the expense of weight. They are armed with a two handed lance (now called the kontos) and a large mace. Their primary function is to act as an exceedingly heavy shock cavalry. Their extensive training and heavy equipment suit them to this task quite well.

Menatarms

Faction(s):
France, England, Holy Roman Empire, Denmark, the Italian States

The menatarms are the proffesional infantry of most north european armies. There carry spears and large knit shields which make them a difficult to beat obstacle on the battlefield, provided they can stick together in their typical shieldwall formation. They wear good chain mail and leather armour, and most carry a sword around their belt for personal protection.

Faction(s):
Hungary, Mongols

Horse archers, a thorn in the flesh for all melee infantry and the slower heavy cavalry of the european nations. They need only to fear high quality foot archers and light melee cavalry. These men coming from the steppes are among the best of the mounted archers.

Faction preview:

The Teutonic Order
http://users.skynet.be/Carthaginian/RTW/news/FACTION_Teutonic.jpg

The Teutonic Order was founded in 1190 during the siege of Acre, when a hospital brotherhood was established to care for the many sick German crusaders. It was given a building after the conquest of the city, and in 1198 was turned into a military-monastic order on the model of the Hospitallers of Saint John and the Templars.

From the start, the order started a policy of conquering land and building up independent territory: in the Holy Land, in Hungary in 1211-25, and later in Prussia, after it absorbed the Sword-Brethren in Livonia. It was in Prussia that the order fought with the Polish dukes of Masovia and Silesia to subjugate the pagan Prussians and fight against Novgorod. After the fall of Acre in 1291 the Grand Master went to Venice, and, following the conquest of Pomerelia in 1309, to Marienburg in Prussia. Thus the Order, by now exclusively nobiliary, came to form an independent political entity. In 1243, Pope Innocent IV had placed the Order's possessions in the Pope's domain, but in practice the Order was completely independent. Its fortunes began to fade in 1410 with the defeat inflicted at Tannenberg by Poland-Lithuania, and a revolt in its territories in 1454-66 further diminished it and it became a vassal of Poland.

The Teutonic order will usualy rather small sized armies but they can rely on a large contigent of the excellent Teutonic Knights, who are among the most powerfull heavy cavalry of the medieval world.

Damn, I can barely contain my excitement at the thought of this mod's release. I still go back to MTW often because I love the medieval period; I'm hoping that thanks to you I soon won't have to.
