I have a friend who also just got RTW, and is it possible to connect from my machine to his directly without going through gamespy to play?

Not easily - the simplest way is just to go through Gamespy.
If Gamespy is not an option, then there are others like Kali.net that I think simulate a remote computer being part of the same network, so you can use the network play option. You could also set up a VPN which would have the same net effect.

Dont try VPN aproach,
It will not work, Well not unless you get some sort of network tunneling tool,
VPN does not send udp sessions,
And without the UDP you cannot see the hosted game to join it,

Both computers will conect and You will get Ip receved messages from your Firewall telling you some 1 conected to your Network game,

But the player who connected wont see the games to join,
and neither will any form of in game chat be working,

the vpn aproach has Been Tried and tried again,
And I have had No reports of It being sucsessfuly utilised for playing Network games, over the internet

[C++ Nerdology]Nice name iostream, but I like to use:

#include

more then I don't have to type:

using namespace std;
