Italia ~ total war

buongiorno a tutti!
Hello, as seeing that there is a need for a mod covering the start of the roman empire throughout the Punic wars, basically offering what the prologue couldnt, i present to you the Primary modification and later to build Spartacus Total war, like others i was disapointed at the lack of any hellenic Rome and there brutal fight up throughout the Italian penisula, fighting Extruscans, samnites, greeks and carthaginian, The founding of Rome was a bloody one with can never be equaled in history,
I make this mod primaraly in honour of my home country, i now if England, and wish to commemorate my country, and its stunnning history, i dealing with a time when romans were romans, before they conquered and mixed in ther way they did, a time when alexandra was fight his way east and rome was just surviving, a small remote city little knowing on what it would soon become. . . . . .

Knowing my history, i began comprising a map, which is in its very, very early development,

http://img63.echo.cx/img63/1672/italy38be.th.jpg

The map is extream early WIP and i need to do a lot a work on it, no exact regions have been added yet, nor hav proportions, however the map will be extended more, perhaps all the way to switzerland ;-)
ALso, i might streatch it too the balirics in necessary though it is a bit far,

thanks ~KingJo5~

Spartacus ~ total war,
The soon to come sister mod to Italia total war
A slaves battle against Romes late Republic,
For those who want to know the true historical background of this great man, you can read it on this web page, (even though the film was next to perfect)
Its a very interested period of time, with arguing Romans, and Spartacus's ambition to leave Italy, ( This will be shown into the game )
more information soon to come,
thanks

This would be one of the most interesting short campaigns if you succeed in making it work.
As you know, playing with slaves can be buggy and perhaps it would be better to transform one of the factions into the new rebels.
Another problem is that a faction with no settlements disappears at the beginning of the first turn. Thus you will have to assign one region to the slaves, perhaps a very small one, without any economical resource, or a non-accessible corner of the map.

In any case, I see this campaign perfect to be guided by a script, although this would be a really hard work. In this way you could assign missions to the slave army and, as a reward, more rebels would join the army.

My advice, design first the type of campaign you want to develop, the number of factions, which will be playable and how.

Good luck!

And you even mention a script in the second paragraph:dizzy2:...

Looking good...

I'd certainly split up the regions (that were on your screenshot), as large regions are really just wasted map space. For instance having the whole Island of Sicily as one region is just a waste of what could be an island packed with beautiful scenery - players will just land at Messana in order to capture it and ignore the rest of the island. Split Sicily into at least 5 regions, probably more. Likewise with Sardinia and Corsica. They should have at least 2 regions each. The regions in the top-right hand corner were just a joke in the prologue campaign - there was no need to leave the coast. I would certainly add some cities inland there. There were plenty of cities in Italy, just pick the biggest ones and use those as region capitals, eg: Rhegium could be added in the 'toe of the boot'. The Tunisian part of the map could also be split up a bit.

Just my advice, don't feel obliged ~:)

Well done, keep up the good work, campaign mapping can be very frustrating and tediuous I know. I'll be impressed if you can pull off the scripting, it could open the door to an 'Odessey' campaign for Troy: Total War, which I am contemplating...

The map you saw, resembled no such form of the current map,
The only probolem im having is naming my regions,
Ive got the cities, however, if i went for historical accuracy, in history,
roman italy didnt have that many regions, 1 region would equal many cities,
any advice wuld sure be helpfull,

you could take one region and split it up into eastern, western, northern, southern, and such. i.e. if you split latium up. have southern latium, northern latium, etc, etc,......
maybe not historical. but would achieve the game play you would be looking for.

Regions were often given the same names as their main city. If you are stuck for region names just use the name of the city for the name of region as well.

After a long night i have sucsessfully concluded Sicilia,
all the regions and cities are finished, though it needs some work,
Also just look at sicilia and pretend that the rest of the map doesnt exsist at all, as its all out of proportion, and needs the regions added,
Sicily is mostly done, however, i need to add the recources and characters, also, i plan to change the climate a bit over the island, for example, from my experience, Sicily is very dry, arid, and rocky in the south, towards the north more mediterainean, so ignore the climates please,
here you are, also , please tell if all the cities look right,

http://img135.echo.cx/img135/1734/sicilyupdate5gh.jpg (http://www.imageshack.us)

I plan to get a lot more regions on the whole map, to stimulate an epic campaign,

Sicilia was one of Spartacus's first targets to land his slave army, as he already had a lot of surport on the Island,
also sicilian rebels often popped up and caused the romans grief,
Another thing is that compare to the rest of Italy Sicily was less defended and less technologically advanced, probably due the Romans love of killing the natives ;-)
As you escape from Italy, you may want to land on this Island, I suggest particually the south coast as it is less defended and the cities are easier to take, also many rebels and mercenaries operate in the area and would be willing to join you forces to takle the romans,
Im also thinking of ways i can show the Romans arguing and their generals fight for dominance,
So to do this he 3 family tree will be present, i also want to try and make them have their civil war at one point, as if to add more tactical sense and historic content, this will certainly be interesting,

I would like to thank everyones surport of the project so far,

Also, the map may be used for more projects once it is done, for example,
one of my first ideas, was an Italy ~ Total war,
King Phyrrus and the romans battle it out,
like others, i have a love the country Italy ;-)
As i am from Campania, now living in London :( I hope this map does this country justice,

thanks

Ooooh I'd love to work with you on a Phyrrus map :balloon2:

Sicily is looking pretty cool ~

A couple of things (this is my specialist subject lol):

-Panormus should be nearer the coast (directly north of its current position)
-Messana should be right in the north-east corner of the island
-You might be overdoing it a bit with all those mountains ~:)

Well done that is looking good! Watch out for blocky corners on the south-west and north-east facing coasts - use RGB 111 for these coasts in map_heights.tga and they won't have corners on them ~;)

Keep up the good work.

thanks for the advice spoonfrog,
Your seem to be the guilds top leading expert on sicily,
It appears we are a new breed of mini campign map editors,
My interest in Roman Italy has inspired me to work on this map,
as i work more and more on the map, i shall split the mod 2 ways,
there will be a sister mod, a mini campaign i guess you can say,
ITALIA~Total war,
How about setting in the days of the roman early republic, one of my favorite era's, with the carthaginians , greeks, romans, gual, perhaps,
Or how about making a team?
Adding in the factions of the day including the Etruscan, siculi ect ect,
I can skin to some extent but cant make models,
Spoonfrog, perhaps we can work together, you style is very much like mine,
My knowledge of city locations is poor and much work and reserch must me done of my behalve, perhaps Spoonfrog as soon as you finish your Sicily campaign we can work on this, i have the intial layout, though i will add more mass to inclued Malta, and more of France and you fill in what i cannot do,
thanks

I don't know about me being an expert - I'd say Monkwarrior is an expert.

As for the Italia map, how about having Thrace or Macedon in the top right hand corner?

Extending the map to the west a bit would allow the islands of Minorca and Majorca, and the Greek colonies of Massilia (Marseiles) and Nikea (Nice) to be included, as well as Hippo Regius and Cirta on the African coast.

I will drop you a line when the Sicilian Campaign V2.0 is finished.

Hi there,I'm Italian too,so I'm happy to hear about some Italian well made map and Campaign,I would add Northern Italy,at least 'till Switzerland, and Northern Yugoslavia also,to have the Istrian peninsula included, the island of Elba (Ilva),with its iron mines,in front of southern Tuscany,if you want infos or advices about historical data and geography just ask I'll be glad to help.
Also I'm a modeler and skinner so..... ~;)
A "focused" Italian campaign would be my joy.....

By the way some of your image links in the first post are messed up.

The second one should be http://img63.echo.cx/my.php?image=italy25ub.jpg
And the third one should be http://img63.echo.cx/my.php?image=italy38be.jpg

Sardinia is looking pretty sweet, watch out for blocky edges and try to make the region boundaries a little more varied (not just straight lines). Malta is looking rather high, try using a darker colour in map_heights.tga (eg: RGB 777).

You have nice big map (although i think you could make it eaven biger), but you dont have to place only citys in it. Make some Towns, small viliges that will make map more alive. Dont use only big citys with walls. There where lots of villiges. You can always use hidden resources to prvent those villages from growing.
The great thing about having big map of small area is that you can put lots of details in it. Go for it. It will make this map realy unike.
And now Sicily. I was never in sicily but i have big map of Italy and Sicily in front of my desk. And when i look at this map i see lots of Mountains, hills. Your sicily map is kinda flat. IMHO you should meke more hills and Mountains to make it realistic.
