NOTES ON FLANDERS

The infantry troops of 14th century Bruges, Ghent and Ypres were quite different from their predecessors. Organized largely along guild lines into regular, uniformed militias, they were surprisingly well equipped, typically protected by mail haubergeons, steel helmets, gauntlets, shields, and often even had coats of plates, and armed with bows, crossbows, pikes and goedendags. Many of the militiamen thus armed has seen repeated service and deserve to be considered veterans.

Potential Units (Unique Flemish)

# PEASANTS
Vrijen
Mostly poor peasants forced to pick up the arms by their Lords, they wear no armor and are armed with a spear. These men are not a battle winning unit but can be usefull since they're a very cheap unit.

# THE TOWN/CITY MILITIA
Citizens from bigger cities were regular, uniformed militias. They had their own weapons and equipement and would be grouped by the generals into similar units. These units were better then Vrijen and quite effective againts cavalry.

Goedendags
Soldeniers armed with goedendag a typical flemish weapon which can be used as a mace or for thrusting like a spear. Cheap and highly effective even against the best armored knights . This weapon was so effective that lots of flemish foot knights used it instead of a sword.

badelaars
Soldeniers armed with a badelaar a sword used for slashing not for thrusting, it was cheap and effective.

Militia Piekeniers
soldenier armed with a pike, highly effective against knights

#MOUNTED CAVALRY

Edelknapen (Medium Cavalry)
Young flemish noblemen, who had the money for decent armor, weapons, horse and equipement. Not as good armored as a Knight and less experience but also cheaper

Brugse poorter (Medium Cavalry Bruge)[/
Rich patricians from Brugge, same quality as Edelknapen but has less experience.

Ridders (Heavy Elite Cavalry )
Comes from the german word Ritter which means Knight. The elder and best armed cavalry. Same quality as French Knights but fewer in number. A unit of these were commanded by an Baanderheren, he would have the best equipement and most experience.

# RANGED

Brugse kruisboogschutters
Elite crossbow units from Brugge

Goedendags: Soldeniers armed with goedendag a typical flemish weapon wich can be used as a mace or for thrusting ike a spear. Cheap and highly effective even against the best armored knights (they said that one goedendag could take on about 2 french knights while 1 french knight could take 10 normal soldeniers (not if they did a frontal attack))
this weapon was so effective that lots of flemish foot knights used it instead of a sword.

Brugse poorter cavalry: rich patricians from Brugge wich were about the same quality as Edelknapen but has less experience because edelknapen were trained to become knights since they were kids. But they are cheaper

Ridders: comes from the german word Ritter wich means Knight. The elder and best armed cavalry. Wich were the same as the french only perhaps in smaller numbers. 20 of these were lead by a Baanderheren the ones with the best equipement and most experience.

the Flemish faction is a graet idea ! Finaly, a mod wich contains the Flemish faction.

The units for the Flemish faction are great ! But, my question is : What area is your Flanders ? I mean , if you'll add the duchy of Brabant to the county of Flanders ( unique ! a count as a faction leader ! ) you'll need some other names and units.

I saw you had only one bow - armed unit, de Brugse kruisboogschutters.
Why not adding medium - bowmen ?
In Flanders, every city and village had a Schuttersgilde, dedicated to a holy person. This guild practised frequently and were armed with normal bows or crossbows.

Names:

In the county of Flanders, names linked to a profession were very popular.
But, In Brabant, names related to a place were very popular.
I presume that place-related were the most popular names in the Middle Ages

( please do not mind the spelling and grammar, I'm not that good at English )
