View Full Version : Mongol Units
I think a previous discussion between Orda and I on Mongol units got this far:
Yuan Imperial Cav..... ( MTW Golden Horde HC )
Mongol Heavy Cav.... ( STW/MI MHC )
Yuan Imperial HA ..... ( MTW Golden Horde HA )
Mongol HA............... ( STW/MI MLC )
Mongol archers ........ ( MTW Golden Horde Infantry )
Spearman................ ( MTW Chinese Infantry)
Guardsman............... ( STW/MI Korean Guardsmen )
Specialty unit........... ( STW/MI Thunder Bombers )
No Korean Skirmishers??
No Korean Spearmen??
why not?
No Korean Skirmishers??
No Korean Spearmen??
why not?
The list wasn't mean to be complete. It's mostly to show the two new cav types, and I included 3 basic infantry. More unit types can be added.
It's my understanding that Korea at the time was noted for its archers. I guess you could have some Korean archers, spearmen and javelins which are not very good in melee.

My unit list included both. It is way back in archives but I think it was something like this......
Yuan/Imperial HC
Mongol HC
Yuan/Imperial HA
Mongol LC
Korean Guardsman
Korean Spearman
Korean Skirmisher
Yuan/Imperial Archers
Yuan/Imperial are the Golden Horde units from MTW
Added to this I suggested Thunder Crash Bombs for Artillery units, if this is not possible then maybe revert to using the Thunder Bomber unit

That list looks good to me.
what would you recommend as combat stats, costs, unit sizes for MP?

100 man units would be nice ~;)

That will take months of work with a guideline for the desired gameplay to figure out.

Maybe it's reasonable to
1. make them available at all (importing Graphics etc.)
2. Give them values that work reasonably for an SP-Campaign.
3. Release a new beta version of the mod for all to playtest and evaluate
or
4. Release a test version to dedicated players like Puzz3D and CBR
to work out the values before the finished version goes public?

Oh! Missed the return of this project 'til now...
The Wargames Research Group produced a couple of great, well researched army lists for the Yuan Chinese/Mongols for their miniature rules ('classic' and D.B.M.). I've condensed them down to the following at the time of the invasions of Japan:
both invasions:
Mongol Guard Extra-Heavy Cavalry (regular, lance and bow)
Mongol Heavy Cavalry (regular, lance or bow)
Mongol Light Cavalry (regular, bow)
Chinese Guard Heavy Infantry (regular, sword and shield)
Han-chun (north Chinese) Medium Infantry (regular, armed with sword or spear and shield)
Han-chun Crossbowmen and archers (regular, medium armour)
Korean Medium Infantry (regular, spear and 'pavise' shield)
Korean Light Archer skirmishers (regular)
counter-weight catapult (stones or 'thunder-crash' bombs)
second invasion only:
Hsin-fu-chun (ex-Sung south Chinese) Medium Infantry (irregular, spear and shield)
Hsin-fu-chun Crossbowmen and archers (irregular, medium armour)
Hsin-fu-chun Light Archer skirmishers
Hsin-fu-chun Firelance skirmishers (irregular, medium armour)
Hsin-fu-chun Handgunner skirmishers (irregular, medium armour)
Southern Tribal Medium Cavalry (irregular, light spear/javelin and shield)
'Regular' vs 'irregular' in WRG terms roughly means the difference between enlisted troops trained to fight and manoeuvre in formations and obey formal orders versus a less formal, tribal or clan organisation.
The army list notes mention handgunners first being recorded in 1288 but 'possibly used earlier'.
Not sure how this equates to the STW/MTW troop types - I'll have a look.
