~ So since Australians use a high amount of sarcasm does that make the rest of the world brain damaged?
I always thought the definition of an Irish man was the removal of 20% of his brain. While the definition of an Australian was retaining just 20%.

Sarcasm is reportedly almost absent in Japan and Korea, at least according to my ESL students and wife. However, my wife has started picking it up. I don't know where from.

Is this maybe a more general asian thing? I had a friend who had a Singaporean girlfriend who didn't understand sarcasm at all. One evening after a few misunderstandings he turned to her and said "you know, I think you are REALLY getting the hang of sarcasm now."
"Oh, thank you very much" she replied, to our delight...
She dumped him a few weeks later obv.

You are so cruel and mean, the world would be a much nicer place if fewer people were less understanding.

Sarcasm is almost always meanspirited. I prefer to avoid it unles it's really obvious. When you have a diverse group of people misunderstandings can get quite numerous with sarcasm.
