Hello,

seeing that we have info all over the place and people have difficulties finding the download links or installing the mod, I thought I collect all info in this thread. If you encounter any problems, post here.

What do you need? (pre-install requirements)

1. A working version of Medieval:Total War/ Viking Invasion (M:TW/VI). (Gold or Eras versions should also work)
2. The 2.01 patch for Viking Invasion. (check your games version by going to the Main Menu (in game), in the upper left corner the version number is displayed) Available here (http://www.3ddownloads.com/strategy-gaming/totalwar/MTW/patches)

Current stable Multiplayer version: Download here (http://www.mizus.com/files/files/MTW/Stats/STWmod_beta5_11b.exe)
If you just want to join us on Sundays for Multiplayer games, you just need this one download and don't need to look further down. Maps for Multiplayer are in teh old Multiplayer Mappack 1-3 for MTW/VI.

]-----------------------------------------------------------------------[

The Shogun-mod beta 7 files:

Shogun mod beta 7 (Samurai Warlords) files, Install in this order:

1. Shogun mod beta 7 For your convenience it comes as a self-installer.
Download link (http://www.mizus.com/files/files/MTW/Stats/STW_Mod_BETA_7.exe)

2. patch for the Beta_7 version that fixes some things. (for list of changes see beta_7 thread)
Download here (http://www.totalwar.org/Downloads/Mtw_Uploads/MTWupload/STW_Mod_BETA_7.1_patch.exe)

3. MP Mappack:
Download here (http://www.totalwar.org/Downloads/Mtw_Uploads/MTWupload/SamWarsMP_MapPack_2.exe)

4. Two patches or hotfixes for MP. If you want to be up to date with the beta_7 MP testing you need these:
1. MP patch, issued Sunday 15.10.
2. MP patch, issued Sunday 22.10 (http://www.totalwar.org/Downloads/Mtw_Uploads/MTWupload/SamWarsMP_fix2.exe)

The Shogun-mod beta 5 files:

Due to desync problems in Multiplayer we decided to go back to the beta_5 version for the time being. If you want to join us you need these downloads:

Either (and this is recommended) the new beta_5 installer with 11b stats, by CBR: Download here (http://www.mizus.com/files/files/MTW/Stats/STWmod_beta5_11b.exe)

or

1. The mod itself in its beta_5 version. This was uploaded November 2004
and is the latest version. Download here (http://www.3ddownloads.com/strategy-gaming/totalwar/MTW/Stats/STW_Mod_BETA5_20nov.zip)
The file is in .zip format and is 70MB large.
It contains everything for a single player campaign. or CBR's Samurai Wars installer (http://www.mizus.com/files/files/MTW/Stats/Samurai%20Wars%20updated.exe) (older version)

2. The Samurai Wars (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=41796) Multiplayer Add-On. This contains the MP stats 11b plus a working Deadpage file, needed to show corpses on the field.
This set of stats was developed by the Multiplayer community and is said
to provide on of the best gameplays in whole Total War. Download it here (http://www.totalwar.org/Downloads/Mtw_Uploads/MTWupload/samuraiwars_11b.zip)

3. STW mappack (http://www.mizus.com/hosted/Yuuki/stwmaps.zip)

Install info: The beta_5 mod files come in zip archives, except CBR's installer. These are compressed files that need decompressing. This is either done with an archiver such as WinZip or WinRar or with the build in function of XP.
Either way you need to specify a target folder for the decompression. This should be the main folder (including the medieval_tw.exe file) of a working version of Medieval:TW/Viking Invasion. You have to accept all overwrites when asked.
Start by decompressing the file STW_Mod_BETA5_20nov.zip then proceed with samuraiwars_11b.zip and finally stwmaps.zip.This last file needs a different target folder. Unzip into Medieval_Total war\battle\maps.
Important note: Please use Winzip or WinRar(free) with these archives because the Windows Unzip function often produces faulty results, puts the files in an extra subfolder.

]-----------------------------------------------------------------------[

Shogun Sound mod

If you have an install of the original Shogun:Total War you can use TosaInu's music/sound-swapper to copy the music of Shogun into Medieval.
Download it here (http://www.totalwar.org/tosa/STW_Mod_Sound.zip)
It comes with its own Readme file.
Please note that in beta_7 we switched the religion from Catholic to Orthodox. The Sound swapper hasn't been updated since. For information on how to get the correct sounds playing please post here.

Just a bit of clarification. The Samurai Wars Installer is a self extracting installer of the STWmod which is about 40 MB. The zip version of STWmod is 70 MB. The Samurai Wars 10b is a zip file of the Samurai Wars10b unit stats, deadpage and stat swapper which should be installed after installing STWmod. Unzip this to your main MTW/VI game folder. This leaves your game with the Samurai Wars stat enabled. To switch back to regular MTW/VI stats run the STWmod.bat that you'll find in the main MTW/VI folder. Always exit the game to swap stats. This stat swapping is necessary because the game only supports a single projectiles.txt file, and that file had to be modified.

If anything new has been added I can make a new installer? Afterall it does manage to compress the file better than when using winzip (70 mb v 40 mb) Or Ras or Barocca can do it.

we have added nothing new to the available downloads yet,

there is an awful lot under construction
(actually there is a ton completed too, but the "guts" of the next update are still being made)

I only have an hour or two a day to work on this and R'as is in the same boat,
but every day progress is definately being made

hello, am new to the guild but have been playing total war since Shogun (I even played the board game) and own all total war games (STW-WE/MTW+VI/RTW). anyways I tried to download the file "STW_Mod_BETA5_20nov.zip" using the link but am getting a 16 KB file ~ . I used both Flashget (GetRight) and direct download, but I have a pop-up stopper. The other files are all OK. I'm really interested in playing this .mod so if there's a problem I hope it will be corrected soon, if the problem is in the way I'm downloading it please tell me what I'm doing wrong.
or if anybody could post a link for the Samurai Wars installer it'd be greatly appreciated ~:)
Thanks in advance.

Hi del Castillo,

right-clicking and "Save as.." doesn't work.
The file is hosted on 3D Downloads.
You have to left-click the link to get to 3D Downloads.
Once on their page, you click "Start Download" and this
will open a pop-up-window (allow this). In this window
your position in the download-queue is displayed + your estimated
waiting time. Mine (just checked this) was 3 min.

The link for Samurai wars is here (http://www.mizus.com/Files/k0rgs8gVt/STW_WE/stats/Samurai_War2fix.exe) .
Need more info? Ask!

Excellent! You're welcome.
For the next version we have some additions up our sleeves.
The whole start position situation, the titles and heirs are all gonna be changed - we've a bit too many high* generals out there.
The Geisha as strategic piece will be added.

Sorry for the late reply. Missed out the post.

It's certainly worth it.

You mean www.amazon.co.uk ? (I'll check my own link afterwards, if it's a site)

I am only afraid the way of paying won't be possible for me. I can pay in cash, but for that I'd need to find MTW in a store.

I'll certainly keep my eyes open or just order it somewere.

Just a question, the other eras in MTW will work except I have to run an application to switch the projectiles file? That's it? ~:)

That's right. You need to run the .bat file just before you load the game, if you want to switch from VI to SamMod.
As stated above:

To switch back to regular MTW/VI stats run the STWmod.bat that you'll find in the main MTW/VI folder. Always exit the game to swap stats. This stat swapping is necessary because the game only supports a single projectiles.txt file, and that file had to be modified.

Guys, seriously, this is a piece of superb work.

I abandoned MTW for some time and it's the mods that made me come back and start anew.
This mod is what STW should've been in the first place.
Many, many thanks.

Im with Hideyoshi,

I love the music from STW but do I really have to install the game and extract the files, surely someone has done this already :help:
edit: in fact Im pretty sure Ive got the files in wma format from the .com site some years ago and converted them ... I prolly still got them buried somewhere... maybe under that 7ft stack of pornos?!!!

I seem to remember there were some minor modding that need to be done to the preferences file to get it to work ... any feedback on this please

am planning on loving it some more with this updated version

If you own the original Shogun version it shouldn't be a problem
to copy the files from the cd into your Medieval folder. No installation needed.

I'm quite sure that those files aren't free to distribute. I don't think
CA has put them on their .com site, either.

The sounds of the christian/ western factions is used in this mod.
Go to the folder which stores the christian sounds and exchange
the files against those from Shogun. It is required that you keep the names
of the original Medieval files, otherwise the game can't locate them.

This is the readme file for the sound swapper:

Required
-about 283 mb for a Rollbackfolder.
-STW WE/MI install.

Run SoundSetupSTW.bat to setup the rollback folder.
Copy STWSoundcopySTW.bat into the STW maindirectory and run it in order to grab the
relevant music/sound files. *
Move the newly created STW directory into the newly made dir Sounds in this directory.
Use SoundSwapperSTW.bat to select music.

Japanese factions use Eurosounds.

well Im quite sure your wrong

because thats exactly where I got them from, the fact they no longer provide them is neither here no there, they provided them for the fans who like the music and didnt want to extract them themselves, and they were downloadable, (pls ask any STW member you like) and CA staff came onto this forum and told us how to use them to get STW music in MTW, somewhere back in the MTW mods forum i think.

thanks for the rest of the info

I guess I could've been more polite. I did intend no offense.
Please understand that people ask frequently for things we cannot provide due to copyright restrictions.
I misunderstood your request as such.
This is because I mixed up sounds and animations.
The animations are on the cd, the sounds are not (i.e. compressed).
I stand corrected.

I was looking for them to provide you with a link.
Unfortunately, this is the only thing I can come up with.
From http://www.archive.org:
The version of totalwar.com from Mar 01, 2005 (http://web.archive.org/web/20050301013647/http://www.totalwar.com/) contains this info:

TOTAL WAR MUSIC TO BE RELEASED
Those of you who are big fans of the music from the Total War games should soon be able to buy special edition CD's featuring the music from Rome: TW, Medieval: TW and BAFTA award winning music from Shogun: TW. With extended versions and remixes these will be an awesome purchase for any TW fan. Any one interested should send an email here so we can contact you first, as soon they become available.

This sounds to me as if they intended to sell the music. This would support my thesis that it wasn't free to download.
I'm sorry, I can't provide a download source for the sounds. My folder is 240mb large and the mentioned copyright issue isn't solved.
So, even if I intended to upload them I wouldn't know if I was allowed to.

I think the easier and faster way is to install and delete the rest you don't need.

Yun Dog
01-23-2006, 08:12
So their going to start selling cd's that would explain why they took the music downloads off the .com site

as far as what the leagality's of providing links to the music that they had provided freely in the past - I dont know - soft ground

Tropico did this - and very successfully, but this aint tropico if you get my drift, listening to cuban regae on a saturday afternoon is a bit different to listening to RTW latin harp music - people would think you're a freeaak !! and theyd be right :inquisitive:

looks to me from Tosa's readme you can get alot more by using his extractor than the 4-6 music files they provided anyway.

Guess the solution is as you say... suck it up and do the install and grab the files *looks at ceiling high stacks of pornos and sighs * there in there somewhere :sweatdrop:

or do i use the sound swapper from the stw folder?

Hi YD,

I have to check out my own folder structure when back home.
I do remember that the .bat file is to be started from the main Shogun folder.
The sound folder also needs to be somewhere in the Shogun structure.
Are you able to run .bat files properly on your machine?
Some people need choice.com in their system32 folders.
Here's a link (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showpost.php?p=792035&postcount=216) to an older post from Tosa.
I'll get back to you later.

Ya the .bat files appear to work, maybe i installed something earlier for this purpose

but I get a little menu asking if i want a:stw music/b:mtw
or C:stw orders/D: mtw

but when I click an option it attempts to find certain file paths which because of my moving stuff about manually isnt working

so Im thinking I sort of understand now, If I set up the STW/Sounds folders as per the instructions, and leave MTW as it was - and run the swapper from the stw main directory - then maybe - Does it have to be WE/MI install or will vanilla STW install suffice?

I will give it a try tonight

Don't hesitate to ask....
I guess you can have a slightly different structure.
The most important thing is that the swapper finds the path.
You could try to put the swapper in the main folder and create
the STW folder directly under sounds (1. subfolder) without
creating the extra sounds folder that I have. Actually I'm not sure
why I did it the way I've done it. Ah well...at least it works

edit one last question

I kept a back up of the mtw sounds cause I knew I wouldnt have the thing setup correctly

what folder structure does the swapper keep the backup MTW sounds in

Content of SoundSetupSTW.bat:

MD Sounds
MD Sounds\STW
MD Sounds\STW\Orders
MD Sounds\STW\Troops
MD Sounds\STW\Frontend

MD Sounds\MTW
MD Sounds\MTW\Orders
MD Sounds\MTW\Troops
MD Sounds\MTW\Frontend

COPY ..\Sounds\Battle\Orders\Latin\*.* Sounds\MTW\Orders
COPY ..\Sounds\Frontend\*.* Sounds\MTW\Frontend

MD is the command for Make Directory. Normally you should run
this .bat to create the correct folder structure.
Now that you've proceeded otherwise you can look at the above for hints.
I'd recommend to read the text file that comes with the swapper and you
can also get info by right clicking the .bat's and select edit.
They should open in notepad and you need not be a geek to understand the commands.

Axel,

doubleclick the installer you downloaded (try the 70MB first).
A program window will open, asking you where to install.
Answer with your install destination (the folder where your MTW version lives).
Second, smaller installer works the same way.

Once installed, you'll find a new "era" after "Late".

Updated the first post with new information for the beta_7 install.
I would recommend deleting all the maps in \battle\maps, including the two subfolders (viking and smap), before installing STWmod beta_7. None of the MTW/VI maps will look right with the STW textures until they are manually retextured using the map editor. This will be a lot of work, and will take time to build up the available maps for use in STWmod.

Right now, the beta_7 install overwrites the maps used in the campaign with the 60 retextured STW maps from the original Shogun v1.12 campaign. MTW does not assign a particular map to a particular province, and instead selects a map from a name group based on the terrain of the two adjoining provinces. For example, if an attack comes from a flat province into a hilly province, then the game selects from the flattohilly group. At this time, I'm not sure that a map that matches the description of the terrain will always be chosen, but I did group the STW maps according to their terrain type such as flat, hilly or mountain for both non-river and river maps. This is going to require further testing. Some of the name groups contained a lot of maps, so I used suitable STW maps for some groups more than once. If deleting all MTW/VI maps becomes a pre-requisite for installing STWmod, these name groups can be made smaller thus reducing the number of maps needed.

The STWmod beta_7 also puts the original 60 maps in \savemaps under their original province names so they can be easily identified for use in custom or MP battles, and also includes 24 castle maps and 38 of the custom maps included with STW v1.12 or created by players for a total of 122 maps. Some of these maps provided excellent tactical gameplay, but all are small maps and not suitable for more than a 2v2 in MP because the red zone was expanded to 3 tiles in MTW which significantly reduces the playable area, since unlike original STW, it's not possible to cross into the red zone.

I think these original STWmaps should work well in the campaign. Battles with reinforcements will be shorter, and the fatigue rate is better suited to small maps. One issue I noticed in testing is that terrain which should be impassible is, in fact, passible. I'm not sure why. I'll have to look into this.

The next phase of map conversion I'll work on is retexturing some of the better custom maps from WE/MI such as Horselands. Since water is impassable in MTW, some interesting maps such as Riverlands will have to have the water removed to be playable. Once enough large MTW maps have been retextured, they can be used as the campaign maps for those who want to have large maps in the campaign.

In testing, I saw a problem in one castle battle. The AI which was supposed to be sieging a castle started inside the castle. I believe this happened when I sent reinforcements to lift a siege. This will have to be looked into further. The castles themselves may be too strong or too weak. Some feedback on this would be welcome. Right now, all walls, towers, keeps and guardhouses shoot, so the castles are exhibiting their maximum firepower. There are non-shooting versions of all of these structuces which can be substituted. Also, the rate of fire could be increased by barocca if the castles are considered to be too weak. I don't yet have maps for castle sizes 6 and 7 since original STW didn't have castles that large.

(As the question came up last Sunday)

Just a note on the fresh install of MTW/VI for Samurai Warlords modification.

Viking Invasion can be installed over Medieval v1.0 directly, as VI has the v1.1 upgrade. Do not reinstall v1.1 after you have installed VI (not needed, and will cause errors).

All you need is MTW, VI, and the v2.01 VI patch, before installing the Samurai Warlords mod.

For beta_7 testing, you also have to copy the \Textures\Ground\Lush and the Winter subfolder under that from a regular MTW install to the STWmod install.

Well, I've this bold theory that once we switch back to beta_5 cav with the MP fix 2, we can use the textures and models from beta_7. That is if we ever test this again before we finish beta_8.

I'm not implying to be not satisfied, I've recovered from the desync frustration and after looking at the files and detailed differences between beta_5 and 7 again, I'm pretty sure that it's the cav.

I for one imagine an MP version with all the goodies and no desync. :2thumbsup:

Update:

Sorry, I didn't post the alternative way to access the site clear enough (took a while to figure this all out). https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showpost.php?p=1279386&postcount=14

One year ago, the site was moved from one server box to another at the same hosting company, because the host deemed the site needed more resources. The old one had to be deleted after 72 hours. That was not done, and part in the host administration told them that we were still on the old box.

All went 'well' for a year, but last Monday/Tuesday the DNS at the host was fixed and that included a pointer of mizus.com to the old server.

Quite a bit of confusion and it took a while to fix (while the fix itself is pretty straightforward).

I apologise for the inconvenience and will work harder to have the 'mirrors' up to date.

Okay, that's a bug in the localisation file, meaning I haven't specified the plural of Geisha. Will be fixed and should not interfere with gameplay. You can use the agent but the identifier will not display correctly.
Thanks for pointing that out. Would you mind posting feedback in the feedback thread in future? We'd also like to know what you think about the smap_7 campaign. Is it too hard? Is there enough income? Is the troop production balanced? What's the AI doing? Etc....

Okay, that's a bug in the localisation file, meaning I haven't specified the plural of Geisha.

I'd strongly recommend not over-adapting the language. That is, leave it Geisha. There are no direct plurals in Japanese. Geisha (or katana or tachi or whatever) can mean either one or many; you can specify just how many, but if the specific quantity isn't a focus of the sentence then you're usually left to pick it up from context.

Yes, I was going to.
In his specific case the game looks for an entry that's not there and because of that displays an error message instead. I'll just put "Geisha" in the place of the plural and we're done with that.

Hi all, I've just tried this mod, and so far I like it a lot. I have one problem, though, with copying music from STW to this, and since I couldn't find a thread for that swapper utility, I thought I'd post it here. So, it says as a first step to run SoundSetupSTW to create a rollback folder. But when I start that .bat file, nothing happens. I checked the contents of the file, and saw I should get some info message, and a choice of continuing or quitting, but that doesn't happen. Could someone tell me what to do? Or redirect me to a thread dedicated to this music copyer?

Running SoundSetupSTW.bat and SoundSwapperSTW.bat

The bat file needs choice.com, which is an old DOS command file, to display the menu. You should already have it in your main game folder, and I know it's included in the samuraiwars_11b.zip (http://www.mizus.com/hosted/Yuuki/samuraiwars_11b.zip). You can put it in C:\WINDOWS\system32 folder so that any bat file can find it. Here (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=39452&page=10) are all the posts I was able to find on using the SoundSwapper. I'll repost them here:

Tomisama:

Ok, lets give a full explanation a go

If you are running the SoundSetupSTW program in the Medieval – Total War\Sounds folder, it will create a new folder called Sounds in that folder, and place a STW folder and MTW folder in it, with empty Orders, Troops, and Frontend folders in "each".

*MD = Make Directory

MD Sounds
MD Sounds\STW
MD Sounds\STW\Orders
MD Sounds\STW\Troops
MD Sounds\STW\Frontend

MD Sounds\MTW
MD Sounds\MTW\Orders
MD Sounds\MTW\Troops
MD Sounds\MTW\Frontend

*Then it copies some of the original MTW files from the program, to the empty Sounds\MTW folder. First all of the Orders\Latin files, then all of the Frontend files.

COPY ..\Sounds\Battle\Orders\Latin\*.* Sounds\MTW\Orders
COPY ..\Sounds\Frontend\*.* Sounds\MTW\Frontend

*Then the original Music folder files directly into the new Sounds folder (Mtw or MTW is the same to the DOS program).

ECHO. This may take a few minutes, have patience please.
COPY ..\Sounds\Music\"Euro Battle 1.wav" Sounds\Mtw
COPY ..\Sounds\Music\"Euro Battle 2.wav" Sounds\Mtw
COPY ..\Sounds\Music\"Euro Battle 3.wav" Sounds\Mtw
COPY ..\Sounds\Music\"Euro Lose 1.wav" Sounds\Mtw
COPY ..\Sounds\Music\"Euro Mobilize 1.wav" Sounds\Mtw
COPY ..\Sounds\Music\"Euro Mobilize 2.wav" Sounds\Mtw
COPY ..\Sounds\Music\"Euro Mobilize 3.wav" Sounds\Mtw
COPY ..\Sounds\Music\"Euro Strat Summer 1.wav" Sounds\Mtw
COPY ..\Sounds\Music\"Euro Strat Summer 2.wav" Sounds\Mtw
COPY ..\Sounds\Music\"Euro Strat Winter 1.wav" Sounds\Mtw
COPY ..\Sounds\Music\"Euro Strat Winter 2.wav" Sounds\Mtw
COPY ..\Sounds\Music\"Euro Tension 1.wav" Sounds\Mtw
COPY ..\Sounds\Music\"Euro Tension 2.wav" Sounds\Mtw
COPY ..\Sounds\Music\"Euro Tension 3.wav" Sounds\Mtw
COPY ..\Sounds\Music\"Euro Win 1.wav" Sounds\Mtw
COPY ..\Sounds\Music\"Frontend.wav" Sounds\Mtw

*And finally the original Battle\Troops\Horn files into the Troops folder.

COPY ..\Sounds\Battle\Troops\"Horn_Euro_Alpine_Advance. wav" Sounds\MTW\Troops
COPY ..\Sounds\Battle\Troops\"Horn_Euro_Alpine_Retreat. wav" Sounds\MTW\Troops

*All of them now reconfigured to fit a format that the SoundSwapperSTW program expects to see.

The “reconfiguration” is the key.

In the Medieval – Total War\Sounds folder you will now have the original game program sound files in their original configuration. And you will have the original game program sound files in the “reconfiguration” order inside the “new” Sounds\MTW folder.

When you copy the STW folder contents (guess you could do it whole, and answer “yes” to the copyover) that you made in the Shogun – Total War main directory, into the Medieval – Total War\Sounds\Sounds\STW folder, you will have a “reconfiguration” of the Shogun sounds.

When you run SoundSwapperSTW and select either the Shogun or Medieval files to be transferred, they are read in their “reconfigured” state, and are sent to overwrite the original game program sound files in their “original” configuration.

At any given time thereafter, you will always have “one” original configuration (either Shogun "or" Medieval) of sound files for the game program to use, and "two" sets of reconfigured files (Shogun "and" Medieval) that the swap program will use to reload your choice, when changing from one type of operation to the other.

Puzz3D:

This command: COPY ..\Sounds\Music\"Euro Battle 1.wav" Sounds\Mtw means the bat file has to be run from a folder just below the Sounds folder. The .. means to back up one folder and then the command goes down the Sounds\Music branch, gets EuroBattle 1.wav and copies it to Sounds\Mtw. Sounds\Mtw has no \ in front of it so it will be a folder under where you are running the SoundSetup.bat.

Make sure your system can find choice.com. Put it in C:\WINDOWS\system32 folder.

Jochi Khan:

Update to STWSounds install.............

I have now manually copied the files that Tomi listed in his post above.
I still cannot get the STWSound to work.

Below is the information that I get when I run the the SoundSwapper.

*************

STW SoundSwapper....Choose stats A STW Music
B MTW Music
C STW Orders
D MTW Orders

A. The system cannot find the path specified
0 file/s copied
Repeated about 20 times STW Music

B. Sounds\MTW\Euro Battles1.wav
The system cannot find the path specified
0 file/s copied
Sounds\MTW\Frontend\DESELECT.wav
The system cannot find the path specified
0 file/s copied MTW Music

C. The system cannot find the path specified
0 file/s copied
Repeated about 16 times Japanese Orders

D. Sounds\MTW\Orders
The system cannot find the path specified
0 file/s copied MTW Latin Orders

All the copied files appear to be in their right places.

Puzz3D:

Jochi,

Apparently, the SoundSetup.bat and SoundSwapperSTW.bat can't find the files to copy them. Those bat files have to be in the right place relative to the files they are trying to copy. This is the folder structure you need under your main game folder:

\Sounds

\STWsetup
\STWsetup\Sounds
\STWsetup\Sounds\MTW
\STWsetup\Sounds\MTW\Frontend
\STWsetup\Sounds\MTW\Orders
\STWsetup\Sounds\MTWTroops
\STWsetup\Sounds\STW
\STWsetup\Sounds\STW\Frontend
\STWsetup\Sounds\STW\Orders
\STWsetup\Sounds\STWTroops

SoundSetupSTW.bat and SoundSwapperSTW.bat should be in the STWsetup folder. The Sounds folder and the STWsetup folder must be directly under the main game folder.

Hi dimitros,

it sounds more difficult than it is.
You actually only need the beta_7 and the beta_7_patch download. (see my signature)
Both are installers that will ask you for the main directory of Medieval.
Only if you want to copy the sound files of your original Shogun install over to the mod, then it can get a bit hairy.

Beta_8 should be finished soon (end of week hopefully) and will come as a single installer that does all the work but the sounds won't be included in it either.

If the next revision is going to provide a dedicated copy (no file swapping), then the sound transfers from STW should be a snap

Has anyone ever ask for “special permission” for limited distribution of the copywrited STW sound and voice files (can be done through a large file transfer site). It is not as if there was any profit making involved or anything.

I mean, at one time, the background music was being made available for free download from the dot com, and I don’t think it really should be a problem...

Battlefield weather effects and the atmosphere on the strategic map were better in the original game. You also had four seasons which affected both the strategic and tactical gameplay. On the downside, the strategic AI had no limit on the money it could spend (original STW), geshias stalking your daimyo were a pain and the AI taisho tended to suicide charge in battle. Samurai Warlords makes use of many of the enhancements to the strategic campaign gameplay of mtw/vi which is a plus, the battlefield AI is slightly different and the suicide taisho is fixed.

On another note I am trying to remember if 1.1 is the furtherest patch of the old MTW by itself.

Thanks I'll fix that.
Here, try this link:
http://www.3ddownloads.com/strategy-gaming/totalwar/MTW/patches

You can access all TW related downloads via your forum menu. At the top is a menu bar, in it is an entry "Files". Try it. :beam:

1.1 is the latest for MTW.
2.01 is the latest for VI.

1.1 is the latest for MTW.
2.01 is the latest for VI.

Just a reminder: If you are reinstalling VI from the ground up, you do not need to add the 1.1 patch to MTW before (or after) adding VI. VI has the MTW 1.1 patch in the install.

Some folks have had problems because of this error.

All you need is MTW, VI, and the 2.01 patch :2thumbsup:

dedicated copy = including the sound files?
Dedicated meaning a copy of VI dedicated to only playing the Samurai mod.

That way there would be no swap files involved. No fuss no muss :beam:

Just remembering (or trying to): Some sound files did not have STW counterparts so substitutions had to be made. And the voice files had to be done seperately, but I don't remember the details on that. Was there a program to help...sorry I should just start looking through my file collection

After beta8 is released, I'll be transferring the sounds from STW, and I'll post my method at that time.

Okay, as said before, the beta_8 will be a complete overwrite.
This means you preferably need an extra copy of MTW/VI.
The other Medieval eras will not work properly.
A paralell install with other mods is also not possible.
For the stats and sounds this means that no swapping is required anymore.
The installer will only be a single file and it will also install the sound import tool from TosaInu. (it needs slight alterations, though)

I've been looking into checking this mod out, but decided to wait until the beta_8 was out. Never tried any other MTW mods before, so please forgive my ignorance. I should be able to install a second MTW/VI instance on my PC, and then put the beta_8 over top of that, while still maintaining my original vanilla MTW/VI, correct?

It's looking good, can't wait to try it out. :2thumbsup:

Hi drone,

yes it's possible to install MTW/VI a second time.
But you can't use the install routine that's on the CD, that would give you an error telling you that you already have it installed. What you have to do to get a second install is actually much simpler (You just need your Windows Explorer and your mouse):
1. Find the main "Medieval - Total War" folder on your harddisk. (default path is "C:\Programs\Medieval - Total War"
2. Right click on the main folder and select "copy"
3. Right click in the parent directory ("C:\Programs\" in this example) and select "Paste" (Insert). Your PC will now make a new folder called "Copy of Medieval - Total War" in the directory C:\Programs\
4. Your "Programs" folder now contains two versions of Medieval:
"C:\Programs\Medieval - Total War" and
"C:\Programs\Copy of Medieval - Total War"
5.You may now rename the "copy of" to "Samurai warlords" by right clicking the folder and changing the properties/ the name. (not required but looks better)
6. As a last step you find the Medieval.exe file in your new folder "copy of...." and with the right mouse button drag it to the desktop and drop it there. From the menu that pops up when doing so, select "Create Shortcut".

You now have a second copy of Medieval and a shortcut to it on your desktop.

Yes, surprisingly you can just copy the folder, despite the involved installer. There's nothing noticably changed by the lack of registry information. Total win.

Even better, thanks for the help.
