View Full Version : Wall Editor

I've started on a wall editor that allows you to place walls in a graphical editor, and then export it into a settlement plan. Should be a lot easier then doing it manually by calculating all the coordinates.

UPDATE: first version is now available (http://users.skynet.be/Carthaginian/RTW/RTWwalledit.zip)

the editor can now export to a txt file (in the format of the settlement plans) and you can build a wall.

Now I just need to make it more user friendly

Looks like this could be a real aid to modder -thx Adherbal; I look forward to the release!

Very nice, Adherbal!! Looks good! Have you implemented diagonal walls yet?

Lord Adherbal
06-16-2005, 19:24
yup, it all works. Just reading/loading files still needs to be done.

ok I'll be uploading a first version soon (after some more final testing). It's pretty basic and still has it's flaws but it works :)

Lord Adherbal
06-17-2005, 13:21
ok here (http://users.skynet.be/Carthaginian/RTW/RTWwalledit.zip) it is. There may turn up some minor bugs (mostly wrong wall links) so if I notice any, please report here and I will fix them asap.

I just downloaded and ran it with no problem, and no password. Nice work.

What did you write it in (language)?

hm the download or the zip ? either way, I don't have a clue whats wrong

What did you write it in (language)?

the language is called "Fenix", which is based on DIV, which in turn is based on PASCAL. It's a high-level programming language (as opposed to low-level = close to machine code) ment for easily programming video games. Nothing fancy, but it does the job fine :)

I am using Download Accelerator, and the download needs an authentication...

Okay, using the regular IE downloader, it works now.

EDIT: Adherbal, are you planning to implement diagonals and diagonal corner links in upcoming versions? This is great!

Great stuff! Really great. Could Eadingas' dream of a settlement editor come true?

Lord Adherbal
06-19-2005, 09:36
@dsyrow1: those are in already. If your not sure how to place diagional walls in the correct positions load up some RTW settlements plan's walls first and check out how it works.

Lord Adherbal
06-20-2005, 18:50
is there some topic that lists RTW moding tools or should this thread be moved to the scriptorium ? If not then I think it'll soon sink into oblivion.

EDIT: just noticed this thread (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=44050). Could some moderator add this editor to the list ?

Adherbal, I actually do know how to use the diagonals, I've figured it out myself when I was placing wall segments MANUALLY. I literally spent -weeks- trying to do the wall for Rome, and finally figured everything out and finished my great wall, the day before you released your prog! :-P Doh

Lord Adherbal
06-21-2005, 09:44
lol - once you figure out how it works it's not THAT hard to calculate all the coords, but it's a pain to get there :) I did it like that for square walls, but diagonals just seemed too confusing so I decided to this graphical editor. I'll be making a lot of brand new settlement plans for ChivalryTW so it was worth it.

Lord Adherbal
07-16-2005, 16:41
looks like I'll be turning the editor into a full settlement plan editor after all:

http://users.skynet.be/Carthaginian/RTW/walledit2.jpg

as I said before, showing the actual dimensions of object is beyound my skill...
Maybe someone with more brains could write a program that saves the dimensions of a CAS file to a txt file, so that I could use that data in my editor. Basicly one would need to seek the Vertices with the greatest and smallest X coordinate, then calculate the distance between them for the width. Then do the same for the Y coords for the Length.

Added to the TWC modding resources thread (http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?p=500910#post500910). Vercingetorix would be the logical one to ask about CAS files, no?

eadingas will be so happy

Lord Adherbal
07-19-2005, 17:58
remember that a lot of things still need to be done in 3DSmax: Overlay and Underlay maps, and the pathfinding model. This editor only makes placing objects and walls a lot easier.

Shouldn't this be moved to the Guides and Tools subforum? And congratulations on this achievement Adherbal! It looks very good :medievalcheers:

Lord Adherbal
07-20-2005, 08:25
Shouldn't this be moved to the Guides and Tools subforum?

Epistolary Richard asked to move it there, but since it isn't really a tutorial on how to use this tool, I thought it didn't belong there. But if you think it does belong there, then by all means, move it :)

Epistolary Richard
07-20-2005, 09:30
The tool's already listed there, I'm more than eager to have a tutorial as to how to use it as well if someone would oblige? :beam:

Lord Adherbal
07-20-2005, 14:07
I might do a tutorial on this tool + settlement plans some day, but I'm too busy with my mod now - and I still got to figure out a couple of things concerning settlement plans myself.

Duke John
07-20-2005, 20:49
Hmm, I created the Tutorials, Guides and Tools subforum to have threads about those three. This thread deals with a tool, so it should be in there. If only tutorials about tools are allowed then I would have named it Tutorials and Guides... see the logic?

Lord Adherbal
07-20-2005, 21:33
so then what are you waiting for - my permission to move it ? :)

Duke John

Lord Adherbal

hm oh yeah you gave up all your moderator powers ?

so if any moderator sees this, move this thread to Scriptorium please

I downloaded the proggi because it sounds promising but, it does not work!
It loads but the the file import and save buttons show no reaction when i try to use them!!!!
Do you made a new version maybe ????

Lord Adherbal
07-24-2005, 10:22
it doesn't load/save the data in plan.txt ? That all that version can do - there is no file browser opening or something.

webbird
07-29-2005, 23:00
Adherbal even worse, the buttons to place a wall or tower work, left mouse klick direction changes also work but every other button on the screen simply do nothing, as if they where just graphics without funktion! no load no save.

Lord Adherbal
07-31-2005, 08:33
to get things clear: the wall, gate and tower buttons work ? what about the "clear plan" and exit buttons ?

try running the program in full screen (press alt+enter). That shouldn't make a difference, but you never know.

webbird
08-13-2005, 15:39
Adherbal you are right, it was no difference.
I wanted to find out how to place a correct loop of walls around the special pretty roman big fort, which i discovered in the game some month ago.
If this would be successful, i can use it as ambient settlement or like a default settlement for custom historical battles.
Maybe i send you the needed files and you try to do it with your tool!??
Let me know please.

Lord Adherbal

send me the files and I'll see what I can do. I'm terribly busy trying to get the new ChivTW beta out, so it might take a while before I do it (depending on what exactly it is what I have to do).

Same problem. How am I suppose to load up a plan with this?

Anyone still care about this editor? Deserted?

Hi there

I downloaded the wall editor program, but it does not start at all :(

It opens a dos windows and then give the error message:
"error al abrir walledit.dcb" (guess it means "can't open walledit.dcb")

I use Vista, abled the XP compatibility and started the program as administrator, no way.

Just want to know: anyone else using Vista have problems with that program?

Is there any other wall editor available around?

Thanks in advance.
