View Full Version : Arthurian Era Mod for VI?

Has anyone done this before? I'm kicking around ideas for my own little mod based on this time period and I wondered if anyone had actually finished one previously. I'm wondering specifically if anyone has a campaign map kicking around, showing the British Isles and parts of the Continent.....

If not, well, I'm working on an Arthurian mod for VI. As this was originally going to be just for me I was planning to just use the Viking era map and mod the factions and units from there, as that's all I really know how to do. But I wonder if other people might be interested in this. If so, I'd like to expand it a bit by having a new campaign map, more provinces (including Brittany, parts of France, etc.) and maybe even new unit graphics. First things first though: I need to find out if someone's done this before. Any thoughts?

A mod like this was released and he did a great map for it. He was called old and faded or something to that effect.

there are two arthur mods? (not including camelot)

i have not played either of them, so i have no idea how "complete" they are,

one can be found by reading this thread
old n faded's mod (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=36108)

the other is a campaign with some new units?,
but i have not tested it to check what it actually does

download link (http://www.totalwar.org/Downloads/Mtw_Uploads/MTWupload/bak-jun-2005/arthur101patch.zip)

NOW
if you take these two and see what they have,
then add in your own ideas

THEN make your own mod

you may freely discard or add to the work they have done
as long as you mention the authors of these works in your mod credits you should have no troubles
:-)

ALSO have a browse of 3D downloads (http://www.3ddownloads.com/strategy-gaming/totalwar) and look in the beta files section,
- it's where we stash any old thing, incomplete mods, bits and pieces
a real treasure trove of resources

also check these for ideas

good luck and have fun

Rock!!!!

Thanks for the links, Barocca, and BKB. :charge:

At the moment I'm downloading oldnfaded's mod.... at least I HOPE I'm downloading it. I've never downloaded someone else's mod before so I'm not sure if I'm doing it right. When I started, I had the option to "Run" or "Save", and I picked "Save". Then it wanted to save it into what appeared to be my Save Games folder. I figured the computer knew what it was doing so I said ok.

Now, though, it's going to take something like 4 1/2 hours for me to see if it will work.... Then I've got to install it, which will be another interesting challenge. Hopefully there's some very idiot-proof mechanics behind all this or I may be screwed!

Alright, this is probably not the right place for this but I'll make it quick:

how the heck can I get a downloaded mod working?

As I said above, the Arthur mod was downloaded to my savegame folder. I can see it in there; it looks like a disk drive with an arrow pointing down at it. When I double-click it and click Run, it says there's invalid material.

Should I move it someplace else? What do I need to do? How do I install?

I'm Hopeless!!!!!! Help!!

did you make a clean copy of Viking Invasions

and i think the mod checks if you have deleted the VI starpos files

Viking Invasion\campmap\startpos\ early, high, late etc

CountMRVHS
06-27-2005, 23:53
Yes I just reinstalled VI.

So I need to delete the Viking era startpos? Or all of them?

That would mean I couldn't play the Viking era and have this mod on the same installation....

something seems wrong here. I'd understand if the mod saved to the place where the startpos files are... maybe I'll try moving it there and see if it works.

CountMRVHS

Still can't get this thing to work;

Barocca, do you mean that I'll need to delete all the current startpos files in order for the mod to work?

Hoping I can get to play this mod, it sounds great...

CountMRVHS you need a program capable of extracting zip files(a type of archive). I recommend WinRAR, you can download it from www.rarlabs.com or alternatively you could just use www.google.com to find a download link for WinZIP(another program capabel of extracting zip files).

Once you have a program capable of extracting the zip you should extract its contents to the main M:TW folder. It might create a folder called arthur101patch in the main M:TW folder instead of extracting right to it. If thats the case just go inside that folder and copy all the files from it into the main M:TW folder. Remember to back up beforehand if you don't want to have to reinstall if you find the mod not to your liking.

I haven't actually installed the mod myself yet as I have another installed already. If you experience any problems let me know and i'll go about installing a fresh copy to test it.

CountMRVHS

Thanks very much for the advice, ChaosLord. This is the first mod I've downloaded so I'm trying to get used to this.

I think I already have something that allows me to extract files. I've done it before with other things like Gnome Editor, and a couple of other things that came already "zipped". But maybe I need WinRar *specifically* in order to open this mod.

On another note, I downloaded the second "download link" in one of Barocca's above posts last night. It appears to be an updated version of the campaign I'm trying to get working, but the difference is I can actually open it and look around at things like the startpos files and unit files. Maybe THIS is the thing I should be trying to install?

I'll try a few things and get back to you. Thanks again!

Ok, a bit of progress has been made, I guess. Here is what I did.

That thing I downloaded from Barocca's post (mentioned above) actually seemed to be the thing I wanted. When downloaded to My Documents, it showed a file folder with a little zipper on it. It was called "arthur101patch". I can open it and look around. There are 3 folders in there:

a Battle folder
a Campmap folder
a Loc folder

and 3 text files:

ARTHUR_BUILD_PROD
ARTHUR_UNIT_PROD
and "changes".

I chose to "extract all files" and selected the MTW directory. It seemed to work: the 3 txt files are all visible in there and when I go to Campmap/Startpos I can see a txt file that says "ARTHUR".

All that done, I start up VI, go to New Campaign.

Now, at the top of the list of campaigns, right above the Vikings, is "Arthurian Legend". There is a description underneath that tells me about the campaign. However, there is no mini-map to the right showing me what the campaign map will look like.

I click to start the campaign but, instead of going to a screen where I would be able to choose factions, I am dumped to the desktop.

I go back, open up VI again and select a different campaign -- the Vikings, or Early. Every time I select a different campaign I am automatically dumped to desktop.

Apparently some of the stuff I need IS actually in there... but I can't play it.

Perhaps what I just downloaded from Barocca's link is actually just a sort of patch for the arthur campaign and I'll still need to extract the files from the FIRST thing I downloaded; the thing that took me to 3ddownloads and took 5 hours.

Problem is, that thing doesn't give me an option to unzip it. The icon appears to be a disk drive with a red arrow pointing down at it. Whenever I doubleclick it, it tells me there is "Invalid data". Do I need WinRar to get to a point where I can open that?

Only other thing I can think of is that, since I just reinstalled VI, it's still unpatched, so I'm working with version 2.0. But I don't think that would make a difference.

ChaosLord, if you could try installing that as well I think it might help me out a lot, to see what I'm doing wrong. Your help is really appreciated,

Hmm, I didn't pay enough attention, thought the zip was the mod. You're right in thinking the first link goes to the main download of the mod, and the zip is just a patch. The file is an .exe and from what I can tell reading the thread they made a self-extracting installer using WinZIP or WinRAR. You shouldn't need WinRAR or any unarchiver to extract it though as it should have everything it needs in the .exe.

But you could try downloading WinRAR anyway, then going to the folder with the file using WinRAR and opening it up. Any self-extracting installers made by WinZIP or WinRAR, WinRAR should be able to open and extracted manually, so maybe that could do it. I'm gonna start downloading the mod and see if I have any problems installing it but since i'm on dialup it won't be until later today before I can install and test it.

I'll let you know how it goes.

CountMRVHS
06-30-2005, 18:28
Thanks ChaosLord. I wonder if something went wrong with the downloading process, as both times I tried it (downloading the mod, not the patch) the same thing happened: once I got to the point where it said I had an hour left, the download finished.

I also patched my version of VI to see if that would help, but nothing.

Forgive my ignorance of this, but would it be possible for me to contact the guy who made the mod and ask him to just send it to me? Or would that entail a crazy amount of time-consuming uploading on his part? Just wondering if that's a last-resort option.

Thanks again, and I'm curious to see how everything goes for you

Oh, that may be your problem CountMRVHS. The file you download should be 39.87mb according to 3DDownloads. It might be a little smaller or bigger then that (by a few .mb) but if its 1mb or more smaller your download ended too soon and you need to re-download it.

As for the mods creator e-mailing you it, i'm not sure if hes around or not and most e-mail services only let attachments go up to a few mb. I'll go ahead with downloading the mod and if you still have problems with it i'll see about putting it up temporarily on another website or hosting an ftp for you to download it from.

CountMRVHS
06-30-2005, 20:11
Ahhhh.... you know, I just checked and the thing called "Arthur" that I have is only 32.2 MB.

But why would it end prematurely, both times, at the same general time during the download?

I'm on dialup myself so it took me awhile to dl it; but I am home during the days now (summer vac.), so I will try it a third time tomorrow, when the wife's away at work. If that doesn't work, then I would be incredibly appreciative if you could somehow make it available to me through one of the methods you mentioned. Maybe my computer doesn't like 3ddownloads? Who knows.

Looking forward to seeing if you can get this working, at least in your own computer!

this is going to be sacrilege,
maybe you should install netscape and use it for tricky downloads,
netscape is vastly superior to IE at finishing downloads

Alright, I finished my download and got all of the mod. It is 39.8mb so yours did end too soon for some reason. I tested to see if I could run the install and I could, so it appears to be working fine. Tonight i'll install a second copy of M:TW and VI to see if the mod works fine.

CountMRVHS
07-01-2005, 02:17
Well, that's good news -- the mod itself isn't the problem, just something on my end that can hopefully be figured out.

I think tomorrow I'll try downloading it again -- you got it from Barocca's link, 3ddownloads, right ChaosLord? -- on the dialup wonder that is my computer, and hope that I get all of it this time. Do you think it would be worth it to use Netscape instead? And how easy would it be to get Netscape? I have to admit I'm rather confused about how I could make the computer use that as opposed to IE -- when I use Juno as my ISP.

I hope you get it working, ChaosLord; thanks again for taking the time to do all this. ~

A while back I put together many of the Arthurian mods but never got around to fine tuning the little details and making a title and loadscreen. I added tons of sfx (real british birds) new terrain (for night battles, real fun for ambushes) and traditional welsh music.
Hopefully I can get around to fixing it soon, the problem with all of the mods I've done with the new night or dusk terrain is that the tiles and backdrops take up too much space to easily get to whoever wants it.
If help is need just ask,
Justin

That sounds cool -- night battles? for MTW? If you have any screenshots or something I'd love to take a look at what you've done. If you get it to a point where anything can be downloaded and played, let me know.

I'm just hoping this download will work, this time...

Oh, as an amusing side note. Since I can't start a campaign where I've got the patch for this mod installed but not the mod itself, yesterday I tried to reload a previous savegame from VI as the Northumbrians. It loaded fine, but the map looked strange.... then I realized, somehow, that I was the REBELS! :dizzy2: I know there's a command line you can use to play rebels but I've never done that. Very.... strange.

ChaosLord
07-01-2005, 22:15
Yes, I downloaded it from 3DDownloads. I installed it this morning, following the instructions to delete the startpos files beforehand. First I couldn't get the mod to work at all, I ended up with 2 "Arthurian Legend" campaigns listed and clicking one or the other would cause a crash. So I tested deleting the Viking startpos file, didn't work. Oddly though deleting the Arthur startpos file actually let me hit continue and see the map, as well as select a faction. But thats as far as it worked, because as soon as the campaign loads it crashes.

Another oddity that in the startup screen theres the "Fall of Rome" title, which leads me to wonder if this mod was built ontop of it, and needs it to function. It certainly looks interesting enough, but these crashes are starting to get on my nerves. I'd test it more but i'm leaving today and won't be back till Tuesday, hope you have more luck with it CountMRVHS.

CountMRVHS
07-01-2005, 23:57
Ahh, you know you may be right about the Fall of Rome. In the thread that Barocca links to, Oldnfaded mentions something about his mod being made to go along with FoR. I just noticed it today when I read through the thread again.

I guess the thing to do would be to see if I can get in touch with Oldnfaded, or just try to download FoR. There would likely be more support for that mod anyway, in case I had problems, and I could try Oldnfaded's mod from there.

Still wondering what's wrong with my computer not downloading the entire thing, however. I tried again today and the same exact thing happened -- had about an hour and a half left to go, and Juno shut down on me. Ridiculously frustrating.

Anyway, thanks for all your advice & help. Let me know if you end up getting anything to work!

Hi guys. I downloaded this mod about two weeks ago and like ChaosLord was unable to get it running. I've also downloaded and installed Fall of Rome (version 2.1 I believe) and then installed the Arthur mod by I'd get a CTD right away. I think the problem is in what OldnFaded stated in the first thread: "It is actually designed to run with the fall of rome mod and even then a modified version" (post 10). I'd love to get this mod running as well. I've just started Winter King by Cornwell, after finishing his excellent The Last Kingdom, and would love to play around in the Dark Ages! Hope someone can get it working and let us know what we're doing wrong. Take care everyone. ~

Hey all!
Yes, I think I remember that this mod does most certainly require the last Fall of Rome mod. But, I don't think for the most part both are compatible- it will change stuff such as unit descriptions in the Fall of Rome mod proper.
For people having ctd's, be careful about the patch that went along with it. When I have the time (which might not be for a few days) I'll probably send the version I fixed up a few weeks ago, which works.
On the night mod, I have experimented with it all year and found that it's only good for certain mods due to various reasons. Because there is no arid, mediterranean landscape in Britain or Scandinavia, this was the best and most logical choice to pick for a night mod. First of all, you don't have hardcoded sandstorms and hardcoded lack of trees. Second, there is very little rain and fog, and in the winter some times a beautiful mist and some light snow and rain, which looks very realistic. I also modified bird sounds specifically for the night. I know big battles very very rarely happened at night but storming forts did happen as well as raids and small skirmishes in the dark. Then all you have to do is make some of the maps arid in startpos, maybe key border locations.
Thanks!

Iustinus, those look very nice. I'm very eager to see what you have come up with as it sounds very cool! I think I'll wait a few days before I mess with my MTW install, and use yours. I'm curious do you use alot of Oldnfaded's mod such as the new map, all new factions, new troop types, new agents, new buildings? Looking foward to it. Take care. ~

CountMRVHS

So Iustinus, I'm not sure I understand. You have made a mod based on Oldnfaded's Arthurian mod? And it includes night battles? Also, what do you mean about "sending" a version you fixed up a few weeks ago? Do you mean you could send a version of the mod? If so, that would be awesome; PM me for email addresses and stuff.

The other question I have is this: If Oldnfaded's mod requiers a version of Fall of Rome, which version should I use? Especially since his mod came out awhile ago and AFAIK FoR is still going with updates and new versions. I would want to download the correct version of FoR.

Iustinus, those screenshots look great! Particularly the one with the crumbled island fortress -- is that a battlemap you made yourself? Anyway, awesome work, if you can send a playable version or tell me where I can get it that would be wonderful!

CountMRVHS

Iustinus

I basically took Oldnfaded's mod and fixed it up so there would be (probably) no ctd's. I used the most current version of Fall of Rome- check the threads for it for a link for the download.
I added night battles as well as cut in half unit sizes to give it a more dark age raiding party feel. I also added battering rams,(thanks HTW) took away mangonels, and added a few new units I'm still working on (Welsh/Briton warriors, Slingers, and the old Celtic Warriors- now perhaps as mercenaries.)
I made a music pack to go with it- different music for the Saxons, Briton groups, and Gaelic groups respectively, and put in British bird sounds. The picture of the crumbled highland fortress I made myself, along with about ten other maps.
It's going to be very difficult to get this out to people (the graphics for the night mod take up a lot of space!) but I have a few things to fix, and have to put in a load screen and title picture, and then hopefully we can get it out to download. Right now I'm going away for a few days, I won't have access to a computer, but if anybody has any new ideas, let's get this mod perfected!
Thanks!
Justin

Wow! That sounds awesome!

I'll try downloading the latest Fall of Rome version so we can be on the same page. Hopefully my internet connection can handle it...

It's hard for me to think of any ideas for things without knowing what's already in place, but it sounds like you've got a practically workable version right now. I wonder, is there a way to upload everything apart from the night battles aspect, so it would be easier to get out to people? And then maybe attach the night battles as some sort of patch? I'm not sure how any of that works though.

If there is anything specific you'd need/want help on, let me know as I've been thinking about this for quite some time. I really look forward to seeing a downloadable version of this!!

Hey CountMRVHS,
Yep, that's what I'm doing at the moment. Right now I'm trying to get together everything needed for the mod so that it can get sent to people. I probably am going to need to reinstall and test this seperately as I have added many things that I can not send out yet. As a patch I'm going to send the music pack and night/enviro sfx pack seperately. In the future I will be checking out other King Arthur mods and adding to this.
Now I have an idea and I want to see what everyone thinks of it. For this mod, we have as an extra unit sound effect the camel sound. This was taken advantage of in Middle Earth TW for the Wargs and in my own personal HTW expansion for the Elephants. I have used this to some success for seperate infantry sfx (the problem is they get the camel and cavalry penalties and bonuses.)
So, should we give King Arthurs cavalry a charge/warcry unique from other cavalry (with the added 'causes fear to cavalry' bonus?)
Or, use it for something else or nothing at all.
Laus Deo,
Justin

CountMRVHS
07-06-2005, 02:37
Yes, that makes the most sense to me: give it to Arthur's cav.

Although, your mention of Wargs made me think of something else. I have also read Bernard Cornwell's Warlord series, and remember how the Saxons occasionally used wardogs in those books. Now, I have NO idea how to make units from scratch, as I haven't done any modelling or graphics alterations, but maybe that's something to consider for a later edition. Maybe, if the Wargs already exist though, we could use them... But it depends on what you think about wardogs as a historical unit.

If that would cause a lot of headaches, though, I'd say it would be better to keep it simple for right now.

Anyway, this sounds great. Keep us posted!

CountMRVHS

Iustinus
07-06-2005, 03:54
It's funny but I had already done that messing around- I used the wargs (after shrinking them a bit) and gave them some sfx. I put three in a unit, and they would be useful for scouting and chasing down enemies, and not much else, besides being a shock to cavalry.
I don't know how historically accurate this would be, but it is an interesting idea.

I don't see any reason why everyone would have to download a huge mod like Fall of Rome for this one. I'm going to try to get it so it can be used with out Fall of Rome.
So far I have not seen one ctd in the game. However, I'm not going to test it for hours and hours and hours so for balance and those things, I'll leave this to everybody who plays the mod, and then later I or somebody else can release a patch if needed. I am almost done with the Load screen and all that stuff, and only have to fix a few units (and get it prepared so you don't need Fall of Rome.)
I should be done by tonight- the only problem is I have no idea where I'm going to upload it to.
Thanks!

Excellent!

Do you have a rough idea of the size of this mod? *hoping my computer will actually be able to download it*

A strange thing I noticed was that Oldnfaded's mod was larger than the Fall of Rome mod... it was like 39MB to FoR's 20something IIRC. Seemed odd.

Iustinus
07-07-2005, 14:42
I didn't think about it- but it's true- although Fall of Rome has more to download the Arthur mod has a new map which takes up more then 50 mb.
However, I can make all tgas smaller and so people will only have to save them as a tga to get the game to work. That way, the game will be way less then the 105 mbs it is now.
The music I'm going to put seperately is about 120 mb as mp3's, people will need to convert the sounds to wav. The ground and sky textures take up 76 mb and the sfx- I'm guessing less then twenty. So, the full mod will be about 300 (!) mbs, if you include the music and night mod.
I hope this works out! I know it's going to be tough to get it out.

Just came in to check out what's going on. Wow, Iustinus this mod sounds great! I really am looking forward to it. I wish I could offer any help, but I really have no experience at all in modding. However, if there's anything I could help with count me in. Do you know where your going to upload it at? Thanks for all the hard work! Looking forward to playing.

Hey all,
I'm finished with the mod, I put it over a fresh install of MTW VI and everything seemed to work fine. Custom battles worked perfectly, and the campaign map loads but then suddenly ctd's if you right click anything. This doesn't happen where I had previously installed it. Does anyone know what could be causing this? I am pretty experienced with fixing ctds and I can not figure this one out right now.
If anyone knows where I can upload this or how let me know. (with the ground and sky graphics, sfx and music pack, it could take up a couple hundred mbs!!) Also, if anyone knows how I can make an installer for this let me know, as I think this would make it much easier for people.
Here are the new units I've added (I don't know how historically accurate they are:)
Slingers
The old Celtic warriors, now as mercenaries
Scouts
Battering Ram
Briton warriors (armed with powerful, short range bows and can hide anywhere)
Highland Peasants (can only be recruited in the Highlands, like other peasants but with a greater charge and shirtless)

I hope to add a couple new units for the Saxons and Jutes in the future.
If anyone has any ideas let me know, but I'm going to be very, very busy in the next few months and may not get to work on this for a very long time.
Oh, also, I created a new special cavalry sound effect for King Arthurs cavalry, and it's working out great.
Thanks!
Justin

I will be putting the mod itself and the music pack seperate. There will be two startpos files, one for those who have the music and night mod and one for those who don't. However, I'll let everyone figure that out later on (not that there's much to figure out.)
I will probably be uploading it to 3D downloads, and shall post a link once that is done (hopefully today.)
Thanks!

Iustinus are you adding new sound effects or replacing old ones?

Iustinus
07-08-2005, 18:38
I'll be replacing old ones- all of the camel sfx get replaced for King Arthur's cavalry, most of the bird sound effects get replaced for a more realistic sound, both for night and day.
I think it's impossible to create new sound effects for the game, I guess it's hardcoded just like you can't have more then 250 units for one unitprod file or deadpage coords.
The weather is hardcoded too, this is why arid works out best for night. Desert doesn't allow too many trees, and there's sandstorms and no mist.

Great news!

Hey everyone!
It's going to be a few days till we can get this uploaded, but that's ok cause I'm probably going to be away the next four-five days so I won't be able to do it anyway. I also found one big problem in the mod but it is fixed now and so far it seems to be working and running perfectly. So, sorry about getting anyones hopes up. Soon enough it will be up. Then we should create a multiplayer thread.
Thanks!

The mod for now is finished!
Download it here:

http://tosainu.demon.nl/files/AutoIndex/index.php?dir=Iustinus/&file=Arthur%20-%20Total%20War.exe

The music pack is still uploading, so I'll give a link in a few days. But don't download it now.
Information is in the readme. There's is one thing I may have failed to mention- make sure that you delete all portrait files located in campmap\portraits. I have found (twice) that if you don't the campaign will fail to locate the pictures for the Druids and Bishops.
Errors to fix in a future patch:
Several flags and shields. If I remember correctly, I had Gwent using the old Mercian shield. Don't mind that this Briton faction's symbol has the white dragon on it! ~

Thanks!

1 hour and 8 minutes....

Damn you people with nice fast computers!

I gave up yesterday morning when I saw that I had over TEN hours left to go. ~ And even if I had stayed on and let it do its thing, it most likely would have died on me in the middle of it.

I wonder Iustinus, is there any other way to get this mod? What if, say, I was to send you some $$$ to put it on a CD and mail it to me? I have no idea if that would work, I'm just throwing it out there.

I'm worried I won't be able to get it as is with the fickleness of my internet system. Should I try Netscape instead of IE?

Hey everybody
I'm not home right now so I won't be able to do anything to this mod for a couple days.....
On people having trouble with the download, if we can't figure out a way to get this to you then the cd idea is possible. For now, here's the link for the music pack: (this is very large)

Thanks for your patience! Let me know any other problems.

This is one great mod! Great job! I love the new battle maps (at least they look new to me...haven't played MTW in a while). Music is perfect and well worth the download (good thing I still have my converter from Napoleon Total War). Splash screens, unit cards, new map, flags all look great! Lot's of high ranking generals and I think I've been getting weak playing RTW because Arthur got his lunch handed to him from some 3 star rebel. ~ Oh well, I guess I've got to learn to fight again. Excellent, excellent job! I can't thank you enough for putting this together Iustinus! Can you tell I'm hyped?

Iustinus

Thanks!
A couple battle maps had errors I have to fix, but otherwise they were all set.
What do people who have played the mod think of the small unit sizes? To me it adds an extra challenge, particularly since I am used to playing HTW with normal units over 100. You have to be much more careful against ranged units, about being flanked, and with your generals.
Also, I think I forgot to add a dying sound for the armored cavalry, I'll release a patch soon that fixes any errors people find.
Again, thanks to everyone who downloaded this, have a great time.

Sorry to be a broken record, but does anyone have any suggestions for how I could possibly download this mod? The problem is that after a couple of hours, Juno will shut down on me and kick me offline -- even if I'm sitting right there the whole time. I've tried keeping the computer "active" by clicking around on the forums and reading stuff here, and I've tried keeping the computer "quiet" by shutting down everything except Juno, but to no avail. Then when I go back I'd have to start from the beginning of the download. Would switching to Netscape have any effect? I imagine this is more of a dialup problem in general.

From everyone's replies, I'm sure that once I *do* get the mod, it will have been well worth the wait! ~ If anyone has any ideas on what I could do, though....

Iustinus
07-14-2005, 13:43
The music pack will be sort of hard to get to you, but if you want, I could divide the mod into small sections, zip them, and email it to you slowly so you only have to download a small piece at a time. I'm home today so let me know if this is possible.
Justin

CountMRVHS
07-14-2005, 13:56
Yes, that would be very helpful. I can wait for the music pack -- I'm sure it's great, but at this stage I'm most interested in being able to play around with the new map & campaign!

I'll PM you my email address.

So how would I go about this -- just unzip each thing as I get it?

Thanks for the offer Iustinus!

Iustinus
07-14-2005, 14:08
Yes, you would be unzipping them into your MTW folder, (or Arthur folder, if it's a seperate install,) thus overwriting some stuff.
Let me know how much space you have in your inbox so I know what the limit is I can send.
Justin

CountMRVHS
07-14-2005, 14:10
Looks like 250MB is the limit, and according to the little bar that goes across the top of the thing, I haven't used up even 1% of that. It's Hotmail.

good luck CountMRVHS,I hope you can dl this mod. I like the smaller unit set up because it gives it the dark age taste.... lots of room to grow. Iustinus, is it possible the have a 2 turn per year set up or is MTW hard coded? and is it possible to add a name to a faction? thanks.....great mod ~

Iustinus
07-14-2005, 16:32
I'm not sure that you can add a two turn year-
I remember people discussing this a while back but I believe it is hardcoded.
For naming a faction, do you wish to rename a faction? To do this is easy, in this mod go to loc/eng and to the file arthur_faction_specific. In other mods or the game the name of the file with faction names is similar. Just be careful because a mistake could mess up much of the text in the game.

Great mod and having fun - got confused first time i saw the night tile set,

the jutes may need more starting strength,
they invaded me straight away,
2 harsh battles and execute all prisoners and they are a spent force,
i took wessex as revenge and i will be taking the isle of ynis wieth very shortly - just one ship to nail down -
and then all they have left is jutland and friesa??

i meant to ask this earlier,

are the welsh and powy's supposed to be using the same faction colours?
(i know this is an upgrade of old n faded's mod, with some extras thrown in)

also with the jutes and dumonians using the same base colour (white) can be confusing using the minimap

one last thing, if you wanted,
if there is any update to this give me a good holler,
i have an ancient welsh flag set floating around,
i think it only needs one or two extra flags to be completed
http://www.totalwar.org/barocca/misc/Flag_Wales_1.jpg

Cheers,
B.

Iustinus
07-14-2005, 18:56
Yep, the Jutes are very annoying at the beginning when you use Dumnonia, then they kinda get shut down. Today they drove me crazy because I would retreat to stronghold when they did a massive invasion, and I couldn't pin them down- they would just invade a weakened province when I tried to attack them. But when I did they were basically overly weakened.
Faction colors I was messing around with- the two Welsh factions have different shades of green, but I'll change it to be more different. I need to finish off all the faction colors- last minute I was trying to get it so that units would be wearing more earth colored clothing, and I didn't finish fixing the colors.
The Jute problem is from the old mod, I'll try to fix it.
Flags/shields, a few still need to be done.
Also, I noticed today that the Dumnonians can build Saxon boats, I'll fix that as well.
On the night tiles, I don' have the time right now to do the mapimages for them- (which only requires darkened versions of the old ones.) but I will finish that eventually. I like not knowing whether a campaign battle will be night or day though!
A patch for this would take up very little space and time, and I figured I'd wait abit for all problems to be found before I did one.
Thanks,
Justin

the jutes are fine as a faction,
they force the human to be honest,

i think they need a few more ships at the start,
and perhaps a couple of extra units of very good infantry and maybe 1 or 2 units light cav

Hey everyone
I know it's been a long darn time, I've been quite busy lately.
Unfortunately, I'm not going to have the time to make a patch to fix up the few annoyances in this mod, but if anyone wants to do that (fix a few flags, fix the Jutes and some other factions a bit, change some faction colors) that would be awesome. Maybe one day if I get more time I will try to do it.
Thanks!
Justin

Woo-hoo!

I was just going to go searching for this thread again, and it reappears on the first page.

Iustinus, I'm going to try again to download this mod (this time using Firefox instead of IE to see if that will help).

IF that works (please please please please please), I might have the time to tweak some things such as faction colors and relative faction strengths (i.e. the Jutes). Of course some playtesting would be required first. I've never done new shields, however.

Anyway, is the download link still good? If I want to try to dl this, is it the same link as a couple pages back or has there been some change since then?

Here's hoping it works... ~

I'm stumped...
