View Full Version : unit texture mod

There are two texture files associated with
each unit, .lbm and .bif. I tried to change
unit graphics by modifying the animation
stored in .lbm file. But when I played the game, all the unit graphics remained the same. I think shogun uses .bif files instead
of .lbm files for unit animation (or maybe lbm only used for 256 color mode and bif used for 16bit color mode, I don't know).
Anyone knows how to read or convert .bif
image files? I think EA tries to keep it
secret.

thanks

from what i've seen, the .lbm files are for tile textures and maybe the unit graphics, but not the animations...if that makes any sense. i've tried to read the .bif's with a couple different readers and the best i can do is read the binary. however, there are some animation readers associated with .html which might work. i just dont recall which ones right now, but when i was working on web pages about a year ago i also ran into some odd file types for animations of .gif's, so ya might try looking in the .html stuff for something that would read a .bif.

good luck

As far as reading .bif files, I did a quick search with yahoo for some programs that could read them. I found one in 5min called 20/20. here's the link:
http://tudogs.com/graphics.php3

Try that one, I stopped there and I haven't tried teh program, but if you're looking for more after that, I'd say jsut give a look around, there's anotehr site that is likely to have somethign very similar to this freeware. The freeware site always go to is www.tucows.com (http://www.tucows.com) they've got good stuff there too.

Hope it helps. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

I edited some units by editing(for example NoDachi)the NoDa_H.Bif because the other bif didnt do anything on mine and it worked. The NoDachi on mine have green stuff on them and their swords are blue http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif. Its cool, but i used a Binary editor.
Thanks for the Info on a bif editor, it will be alot easier now.

I tried it out as well, 20/20 has a nice screen capture utility that I needed, so I tried editing it as well. Maybe the .bif files are protected in some manner. Would make sense, since it's not an internal error with the program itself, it'll open up everything else on my system. Those text files associated witht eh .bif files must be important as well. They're strings of 5... or is it 6... rows of numbers ranging between 0 - 255. Dunno if that's binary information or not. I'm kidna at a loss as to how to open the files. Maybe just try another program I suppose. best I can think up

damn... oh well. back to the drawing board http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/wink.gif

I was playing around with my PSP and I found a way to edit units color-wise. I ended up having blue armor for my No-Dachis instead of red...and yellow armor for my Naginatas instead of their red color armor also. Although thats the only thing I can do since when I try to do anything else besides changing the color and brightness, the sprites start to look like a bunch of walking TV screens with lots of static. But with my colors edited...I can easily see what my units are by the color of their armor http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif
