ok in class when i am bored i draw swords, hundreds of swords and have attempted to compile as many as posible so i'm gonna try and post as many as possible, feel free to put in any i forget. note these are only the ones i know the actual name to.

greek:scalpa, xyphos, kopis
roman:gladius, gladius hispanicus
japanese/chinese:kitana, wakisashi, gin, doa(broudsword)
medieval england/france:broadsword, longsword, rapier, claymore, bastard sword
egyptian:kapesh
middle-east:tolbar(i think thats how you spell it), scimitar
turkish:sabre,
oceanic (carribian):cutlass, naval sabre

naturally there are many different styles of scimitar and broadsword and sabre, depending in what part of the world you are in. but if you know any swords that are in there own distinct class (such as those double edged chinese swords that i don't know the name of) then post them here, and any other swords, i always thirst for such knoledge

Japanese:
-ken double edge cutting straight sword,
-tachi mostly a katana mainly used by cavalry carried around with the cutting edge down a bit longer too iirc,
-no-dachi extra long katana.

I believe the gladius hispanicus was called the falcata.
The egyptian sword-axe was the khopesh, phonetically correct.
There was a sword-axe used by the Bastarnae in RTW called the rhomphaia, and I'm pretty sure I read about it somewhere.
I'm guessing bringing in the Dacian falx here would be going too far for a sword?

The Japanese also had the hachi-wari, if I recall. Or was that just a knife?

To find picture, simply google 'sword replicas' + (name of sword), and I'm sure you'll find plenty of good pictures. :)

Romans also had a 60cm sword (i think) called the spatha. Most of the later legions were equipped with them. Secondly, a Ododachi (spelling?) was a very large slashing sword used mainly against horsemen and their mounts. While it was effective at killing the mounts, it was often too large to fight the now unmounted infantry.
