View Full Version : Hastings 1066: 3x3 MOD for Medieval Demo
Well this is my 2nd MOD for the Medieval Total War Demo
This is the link: http://www.geocities.com/armendoza/Medieval.html
It is a Zip file, you will need to use PKzip or Winzip to open the file. Don't forget to read the readme!.txt file first. You can send me your suggestions, complains and raves to jussefix@hotmail.com
This time I decided to go Historical and this MOD is based in the Battle of Hasting between the Normans and the Saxons.
This is a 3x3 battle, with many troops so I hope you have a good processor. Mine is Pentium IV and almost crashed trying to draw so many sprites http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif As usual I don't accept any responsabilty for any possible damage to you or your computer, thanks http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif
You play as Harold, the Saxon King. Your allies are your brother Leofwine and Gyrth. Your enemy is the Duke William and his Allies: His Brother Odo and the Count Eustace.
The battle of Hasting was fought between pretty different armies and I have tried to show it in my MOD:
Harold:
- No Knight or Archer at all
- Only slow but very brave Infantry
- Have a very strong defensive position on the hill
William:
- Lots of Knights and Archers
- Has the disadvantage of charging upwards against a wall of shields and spears.
Have fun http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif
Great battle Choco, didn't have a problem with graphics at all, and from a PC from Aldi!
My machine is also a P4 but a 2Ghz with a Geforce 460 card.
Anyway onto the battle, first the mad scramble up the hill to get to a better position, quite a jostle with the allies for position, but I managed to take centre ground.
I think the AI is quite smart in this situation as it did exactly what I would do.
Get up as high as possible to reduce archers range.
The AI does seem to do quite well, I might try switching to one of smaller ally sides and see what happens.
It was a great and very close battle but I won.
I then switched sides to play as William, and that was a little tricky. By the time I had my units sorted how I wanted them(big traffic jam), my allies were already enaging Harold's army and doing so in the trees, doh!
Both were routed but I carried the fight and by drawing Harold down onto the flat, my cavalry was able to cut them apart.
I lost over a thousand troops though and only killed 400.
Certainly going to try playing as the different allies as this battle is great fun.
Everyone with the demo should certainly try this, I hope your PC's can handle it.
This is what TOTAL WAR is about!
Duh! Pentium IV is a bit too much for most of the users out there.
I am a programmer and I use ... (oh, better not mention it).
But then again, programmers don't need high end computers, while gamers do.
So I digress.
----------------------------------------
Anyway, when I read the Historical battle of Hastings, I was amazed by the high morale of the Vikings. They were soundly beaten repeatedly, but just keep attacking. Eventually some 20 knights charged in and finished the Saxon King (some say it was an arrow in the eye that did the job).

WellI know this mod is probably a little too much for a PII or PIII to handle But I wanted to see how many troops I can field so I put a bunch of troops.
However it is always possible to edit the army files and reduce the quantity of soldiers. With less troops the game runs very smoothly.
Yep DrNo at least this time the AI didn't break and run away. In effect the AI as an ally seems to have a method to its madness: If one of my units is breaking the AI will send its closest free unit to the rescue.
In effect the MOD runs in a very similar way to the real Battle of Hastings: As far as you stay on the hill and the woods you are OK, problem is that as the real Harold you have no control over your allies and frequently they will charge downhill into the flat just to be massacred by the knights.
Choco, I had even more fun when playing as one of William's allies.
One who starts on right flank as you look at 'Harold on the Hill'.
Moved up the path all the way To The Top (Mithrandir's favourite words it seems),
and flank charging Harold and his mates.
William actually followed with most of his army up the path but cut across before he had outflanked Harold and so met full on, giving me the rear charge.
Will certainly try other flank and see how that goes.

This was an excellent mod http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif
How many units did you have in here in total? My army alone killed about 1 100 men, and my allies killed a few hundred too at least... and there were many left standing when they retreated.
Also, how do i change sides ot play as one of the allys or something?
Harold and allies: 1600+ soldiers
Willima and allies: 2700+ soldiers
So you have something like 4000+ spritefest http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif
Too play as William or any other team you need to open the Jaffa.bdf file with WordPad or some text editor and check those lines:
Player::"William" 6 6 ARTIFICIAL "saladin" 0 true 22066 5924 0 MUSLIM_CULTURE
Player::"Eustace" 7 6 ARTIFICIAL "eustace" 0 true 21066 6924 0 MUSLIM_CULTURE
Player::"Odo" 2 6 ARTIFICIAL "odo" 0 true 20000 5000 0 MUSLIM_CULTURE
Player::"Gyrth" 8 5 ARTIFICIAL "gyrth" 0 false 29500 28000 180 CHRISTIAN_CULTURE
Player::"Leofwin" 3 5 ARTIFICIAL "leofwin" 0 false 19500 28000 180 CHRISTIAN_CULTURE
Player::"Harold" 5 5 LOCAL "richard" 0 false 32000 32500 180 CHRISTIAN_CULTURE
where ARTIFICIAL = AI, LOCAL = Human player
Just sweep ARTIFICIAL by LOCAL between Harold and any other team you want to control and that's it.

Thnx Choco http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif
BTW, u dont play DAoC do you?
I just made the Hastings battle a 4x4 and added another 1000+ troops
Now it runs like %$#%& .... the screen almost freezes and is sluggish at the best.
I will have to scaled down the MOD. Seems like you can push Pentiun IV just that far http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/frown.gif
Oh, well.
If I have time to play your demo, I will reduce the size of the army anyway.
I realy like the idea of having stupid allies by my side in a life-death situation! Everyone is your enemy now ...
Muhahaha.

Choco, you had trouble with this battle on a p4? My comp had no trouble with the 4000 sprites and could probably easily handle another 1000. Maybe its your video card or something thats holding you back.

Nice mod choco ! I managed to play this on a lowly PIII 500 with 512mb and a 32mb card - it chugged somewhat, but was definately playable. Instead of the usual Harold standoff on the hill I chose to take the battle to William. I sat on the hill at the start position till William's main army started to climb the base of the hill. Then selected the whole of Harolds army and charged downhill - punched a hole straight through the archers at the front of William's army freight train style. The cavalry behind visibly buckled with the impact, but they held and tried to push Harold back. It then became a long hack and slash session on the front line. Lost half of Harolds army before the allies came in at the last minute to provide support - a bit more hacking and finally William's cavalry broke and he was killed shortly after - game over
Great Fun - thanks Choco
Hey, if anyone wants info on the battle of hastings or that time period, a good site is: http://www.battle1066.com/intro.shtml
Thanks for the link to the Hastings site Very useful
I think I am going to remake the battle and this time recreate the order of battle as well possible.
I don't know my PC got problems running the battle ... it ia a PIV 1.7Ghz perhaps I need to check the video card
With my setup I had to turn off hardware sound acceleration before the game ran smoothly, I don't know if your in the same predicament or not but if you're really having that much trouble maybe you should contact tech support.
Hope you get the game running more smoothly http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif
Also, is it possible to use earlier units with the resources of the demo? people have used different units in their mods not featured in the regular demo though I don't know what you're limited to.

How do u get it to run smooth avram?
I too am on a p4, 1.7, with a geforce 3 ti 200 and 512 ram... yet it runs like a slide show (about 1 frame per half a second - just under a second...)
Interesting how me and choco have the same processor and the same results... hmmm
[This message has been edited by Limpfish (edited 07-10-2002).]
yeah, as I said before, with my system I had to disable hardware sound acceleration to get it to run smoothly. failing that, I would contact tech support because in the full game there are going to be much larger battles.
I played this on my Athlon 1.4ghz Geforce3 without any trouble (just Probably just a fraction slower, stickier than the normal map).
I do always have to disable Hardware acceleration setting in Sound.
However I have noticed I get random CTDs if I do decide to this play map more than once in one session
All other maps do not cause me any problem
Interesting

How do i disable Hardware Sound Acceleration Avram?
In ME you go to start menu/settings/control panel/sounds and multimedia and then go to audio and then advanced and then click on performance. Once there you can slide the acceleration bar to none. Hope that helps http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

id love to play this mod but fear my
p3 650 NVidia 32mb 64mb ram (last bad i now)
would finally give up and die so if ya could keep it a 3v3 but ever so slightly scale down troop amounts
well ... I just checked my Video card and it is just 32MB http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/frown.gif
Now it makes sense why the game was so slow http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif
I think that with 64MB Video Card you should do just fine even if you are not using a Pentium IV
Anwya, I think I am going to scaled down the mods and make "lighter" versions with less troops

no my 3d card is 32mb ram
my computer has 64mb ram
Wow,you need more RAM desperately, I have 640MB (yes, 10 times as much!). This game (i believe) is more CPU intensive than video card, as a result of the massive numbers of AI routines. Note: the 2d sprites featured in MTW do not tax a 3d card.
[This message has been edited by AvramL (edited 07-13-2002).]
Well I have just put scaled down versions of the Hastings and Falkirk MODS so they should run better in slower PCs http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

AvramL send me the money to urgrade ill skip + sing all the way there + back http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif
thinking bout a complete overhaul neway get a Athlon 2 ghz 756 mb ram a 64 mb geforce and broadband now all i need is the money http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/wink.gif
RAM, for one thing, is pretty cheap these days. Also, I have upgraded my comp slowly over the last 8 months with better hardware but it's still kinda wanting compared to the new stuff. I vote for starting a new charity: "gamers with computer envy". I'll start going door to door as soon as I stop playing MTW, which could possibly be when I drag my atrophied body to the kitchen for much needed nourishment http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

I agree. I noticed that with my 96 RAM, I couldn't even handle the smoke effect, but with 320 RAM, everything runs smoothly.
LittleGrizzly, you can buy RAM at stores such as BestBuy (assume that you are in US) for really low price. I bought my 256 RAM for only 25 dollars.
Then you just open your PC and slide the card in.

I tried turning down the audio hardware acceleration but that didn't help at all http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/frown.gif. It doesnt make sense that people with not as fast of a cpu/vid cart etc are getting smooth performance and i'm not!! http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/frown.gif
Limpfish, have you contacted CA's tech support? Also, what resolution are you running the game at?

Choco,
how are you going with the order of battle?
housecarls work in demo, will they be sed instaed of feudal troops?

When I did the mod I didn't know it was possible to use "iconless" units so I didn't put Housecarls.
Had I known back then I had used Housecarls for Harold's army. I am going to fix the Hastings Mod in a more accurated way to see how it works.
On a side note since we can use Housecarls in the Mod I am feeling like doing a new Mod with a "Viking" Theme that could be a nice variation and I think I have the right Map for it.
Now I just need some free hours to run it
depending how fancy you want to get
here are some of Harolds Force leaders at Hastings!
Harold Godwinson King of England.
Leofwin
Brother of Harold and Earl of Kent.
Gyrth
Brother of Harold and Earl of Essex.
Harkon
Nephew of Harold who was held hostage by William from 1052 to 1064.
Aelfwig
Harold's uncle and Abbot of Winchester.
Leofric
Abbot of Peterborough.
Godric
Sheriff of Fyfield, which is in Berkshire.
Aelfric
A Huntingdonshire thegn.
Breme
Possibly one of Gyrth's thegns.
Esegar
Sheriff of Middlesex.
Thurkill
From Berkshire ( status unknown).

As mentioned in another post, apparently mounted feudal knights are available in the demo. That would be a great boon to historical accuracy to use these in the mod instead of late knights http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif
Hey Choco, I just got a book on Hastings and was wondering whether or not you needed/would like any info or pics of the battlefield.
if the game is running really bad for you, set your antialiasing setting to the "let the progam set it for you" is you don't have that, try turning it off. mine runs horrid if i have it on, 1/2 frame sounds about right. but once i turn off AA it runs great. i have a 1ghz athlon t-bird 512 ram geforce3 ti200 64 meg.

Thanks. What book is that? If you can scan a map or diagram of the battlefield showing the armies' starting positions and terrain features that would be neat.
To built my mod I used info from "The Nordmans" by David Nicolle and "Hastings 1066" by Christopher Gravett. Both books are published by Osprey Military.
Lost of good info but no decent maps of the battlefield http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/frown.gif
Man, what's with the ultra slow post appearance deal?
Yeah, the book I got is the hastings campaign edition from Osprey. The maps provided are a bit general and vague if it's real detail you want (revised edition I'm assuming). Though I suppose as far as army start positions go, that's about as good as you're going to get for a battle like Hastings where much is little more than guesswork. Still, the modern pictures give some idea of the lie of the land.
PS. I'm going on vacation tomorrow for two weeks so I'll temperarily bid farewell until I get back.

Great mod but Fuedal knights would have been more accurate cause thats what the Normans used.
as we leanr more about the units the mods will be updated,
i think choco is currently working on 3 simultaneously, so he's very busy

Very nice info. I could try a more realistic Hastings with Hussecarls after all http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif
Could you make it so they don't break and run? The pansies always get scared. After drawing them into a pocket with my forces 'retreating'(as if my forces would retreat with a genius general such as moi, yes you may commence laughing) I charge out of the woods with 2 of my best units and charge into their flank. Easy riding after that.

I played the 'lite' version - runs fine on a P3-750 laptop with only a meagre 16mb video & 512mb Ram...(I guess this supports the more cpu less video theory) Heavy version doesn't run at all well... surprise, surprise. Hopefully the final game will run OK on my laptop, or I will have to buy a new one!
Anyway, thanks CB for the mods & thanks for providing lite versions for us peeps with older equipment...
