A good way to weed out lazy (i.e. drop) players is to use a custom map. At the very least they must go and download it, thus proving they are worth playing.

I've mellowed some of the hills...added a lot of nice graphics...
http://www.totalwar.org/upload/MTWDemoMod/bachs_gambit2.zip

Unzip the file with (with Winzip) and place it in your ...\...\...\savemaps folder located in your Medieval Total war directory.

Play 3v3, 4v4...enjoy

Edit: changed from \battle\maps to \savemaps as per discussion below.

I think we should all try putting the custom maps in \savemaps folder rather than \battle\maps. This will keep them from mixing in with the official maps. If MTW is like WE/MI then eveyone will have to have the custom map in the same place.

Good idea to knock down the hills Bachus.

Good idea, I changed the original message to say /savemaps.

Also, keep in mind I said "mellowed" not "eliminated" the hills. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

CanCritter would not forgive me if cut them too far. And anyway, there are avenues of approach that aren't so steep...it just takes a little maneuvering.

Edit: One thing I've noticed (and have mixed feelings about) is that now puddles and lakes are impassable. It kind of changes the tactics of the map, but in the long run I guess it was neccessary. It was annoying to have to worry about the depth of fords and such (but was nice to be able to ford streams).

Oh well.

Did you by any chance to figure out how to create still water?

BTW, great map.

this is not the first post about new maps,
but such things usually appear in the mods forum,
which is where this thread should be..

Thanks http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif, I hope you enjoy it. Makes me feel warm and fuzzy.

What do you mean by "still" water? In the editor the water level fluctuates, and I believe it have to do with the water level in various seasons (haven't tested it yet). At the very least, I can say that Summer's water level is the lowest ebb of the editor fluctuation. Winter/Spring might have higher water levels, I dont know. In the game, the water level is constant, so in a sense, regardless of how it looks in the editor, you get a solid waterlevel in game.

If you mean that the water "ripples" and seems to flow in one direction, I think that is a permanent effect that we are stuck with for now. It doesn't effect gameplay, and I haven't found a way to make the puddles stop blowing/flowing. I think we are stuck with it, but it would be nice to have a form of water that looked more static. A 2-foot diameter puddle with flowing water just looks wierd.

Finally, as I noted above, all types of water are now impassable (you used to be able to go swimming in lakes and streams...in STW only water in maps with a river that stretched across the map+Bridge, or a map that originally had a coastline programmed in was impassable). This makes a map like Ob Rivercrossing unplayable in MTW, which is IMHO a real shame.

So, I guess 2 issues for the wish list --

1) Water that doesn't flow;
2) Water that is "fordable", passable, whatever...I want to wade my troops across shallow ponds, streams, etc.

It would be fine if the non-flowing water was passable, and flowing water wasnt. So, we are actually looking at some sort of texture-tile for water...having at least 2 types. As it stands now, water is a "terrain feature" that is latent to every map. If you decrease the height of the land to the water level, water appears (again, only one type--in MTW its impassable). The present treatement of water also makes glacial/mountain lakes impossible, as all water appears only at sea-level.

Obviously room for improvements, but I still give A+++ marks to the programmers for including such a wonderful editor (with lots of potential!). Now if we could only make scrolling map-previews, we'd be golden.

Start cranking out maps, fellas, there is a lot of rewarding fun to be had.

See y'all online.

Thanks for all the smilies!! (and for not kicking it over to mods). I think in this case an exception can be petitioned for, and I hereby petition for the aforesaid exception on the following grounds:

1) the map editor/custom maps are underused by most players (sadly) and some don't even know about the option ... hiding such a feature in the Mods forum will just perpetuate peoples ignorance; and,

2) The legitimate non-mod portion of this thread is that you can avoid annoying drop-players by using custom maps.

Move it if you must... http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/frown.gif

I mentioned this in another post; for me all new maps MUST go into the Savemaps folder. Putting them in battle\maps allows me to see the map on the map-list but when I click to select it the game freezes/crashes to windows. Can anybody check if this happens with them also?
