So far our knowledge stretches concerning copy and pasting in photoshop u can not select an area in a layer and copy it direct into the same layer...

now when u paste it creates a new layer which u have to merge later...

any ideas how to do this faster?

i dont know about photoshop, but in psp you can select, copy, and paste an area from a layer back into the original. you highlight a given area, copy, then 'paste as selection' and can move it around then drop it where you want it back into the original.

you can usually chain the layers together, but yes, pasting will automatically create a new layer which has to be merged to have a single image.
using the keyboard shortcuts speeds this process up considerably.
