our Wolf mapdesigners made a campaignmap which is hex-based, see

Have been meaning to post something for a while on a point-to-point system for TW series. IMHO a hex-based system might take away from the flavor of how things are now.

Have played several conventional "paper & cardboard counter" games (WWI, French&Indian War, American Revolution) from company GMT.

here's a link to a map segment, showing concept, of F&I War one: http://www.gmtgames.com/nnww/ww_map.html

WWI: http://www.gmtgames.com/nnpg/pog_map.html

note how they handle Pripet Marshes with points and lines.

Also IMHO, having played both now, think the point-to-point gives you simplicity and more freedom at the same time:
*movement can be graduated at will in any given direction: just add points.
*movement can be prevented or canalized - no lines, no movement allowed.
*for TW series, each point and line in combination could be a separate battlefield or orientation of set up on same battlefield if each point has only one battlefield.

Not to say hexes are bad, but you might do more with point-to-point.

As a sidebar:
The "poker hand" card play driven nature of these games is kick ass to, something like this concept would be great for TW series I'd think.

interesting. is the hex map what you plan on using for the online campaign?

nice job, btw.

darn he forgot to skip malta on the map, thx tera for pointing this down.

in some cases point to point are nice. esp if there is a clear infrastructure favourable over any other way to travel. in medieval times infra structure was enuf developed to let armies move to all directions (with some limitations of course).

in teh end every map is point to point based.

its not clear that teh map will be used in the online campaigning sphere. first of all it was a little test to see if the tehcnics of making this map can be worked out.

the original regionsize is just a bit too big for the campaignstructure. some regions are massive.

I am promised that a point to point map will be made but that requires some historical knowledge of which the GWIS has teh info but need the time to snif thru it.... it should be a fine combination of geographical citylocations, old battlesites and some practical points.

Tera you didnt look close enough....Malta is there..it just hasnt broken away from the north African land mass yet.

Tera...every time you walk through your old towns you must feel the Medieval around you .... isnt it true alot of your older streets were created thin to stop masses of armies charging up them....Malta is a wonderful place...people of steal are created there....a history that not many could match in such a small region....(added cos Monsta loves Malta!).

LOL! I know Malta is there...but it's just TOO big http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif It's almost as big as Crete on that map...hehe.

MKC:

So as not to distract from this thread, will start another when I get a moment on the point-to-point idea.

finally.... after a full search about the importancy of malta in medieval europe its conclusion is: not enough to be presented on a campaign map.

sorry tera.

we tried the point to point system but i is just not workable enuf for us now. it has some advantages but not big enuf to replace an hexbased map as we have now

btw the map is updated with fantasy locations of castles (include aslo ports) and ports

Sounds so cool. . .is there somewhere a regular user can download it?

Hi,

I like the idea of a map with more provinces, but I feel that the look of the CA map is so good I would prefer something based on that, personally. I don't feel hexes fit the period, even though I'm an old-time wargamer.

I also don't care much for point to point, as I think the timescale is large enough that geography should not hinder movement. Also, I, at least, need lots of space sometimes to place armies et al in a province.

All IMO, of course. I salute your collective efforts.
