View Full Version : The Freeware and Open Source Software Thread

Alexander the Pretty Good
01-18-2006, 22:59
With this thread I hope to start a .Org collection of the best free software - both freeware and open source. This will be a benefit to all in the Kingdom of Peace and Love who do not wish to pay for nor pirate software. So post links (and comments) regarding the best free programs available, please! I'll edit contributions into this first post for future quick reference. :2thumbsup:

The only rule:
No "Trial Versions" or Demos.
Free releases of otherwise pay-for-license software is OK, like Winamp (see below).

Number of entries: 94+
Number of open source entries: 33+
I'm now too lazy to count. ~;p

Entry Format - posting in this format helps me out! I would be much obliged if you did.
-------------------------
Title
Homepage The homepage (or something close) of the program. Please make a note if it isn't a direct homepage.
OS: The operating systems it runs on, to the best of your (and my) knowledge: Win, Mac, Linux etc
Open Source: Is the software's code available? (See below for more info): Yes/No
Description: Tell us it's function and why it belongs on the list. A few sentences is all that is needed.
-------------------------

What is this "Open Source" you speak of?"
Open Source goes beyond "free" - the usual analogy is that open source software is "free like in beer and speech." The general public has legal access to the source code of the software, the code used to make the program.

Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Open-source_software)
Sourceforge.net (http://sourceforge.net/docs/about) - The best site for open source developers (and those who look for open source stuff)!

The entries are organized alphabetically within each category, favoring open source software over non-open source.

MP3Gain analyzes and adjusts mp3 files so that they have the same volume.

MP3Gain does not just do peak normalization, as many normalizers do. Instead, it does some statistical analysis to determine how loud the file actually sounds to the human ear.
Also, the changes MP3Gain makes are completely lossless. There is no quality lost in the change because the program adjusts the mp3 file directly, without decoding and re-encoding.

K-Lite Codec Pack
Homepage (www.codecguide.com)
OS: Windows

The installer comes with several options that increase and add more detail level to what kind of codecs you'd like to install.
The point is if you already have installed any codecs or codec packs like this, uninstall them before trying this. This is vital for a less problematic OS afterwards. Best time is right after you fresh OS install as I said above.

It is designed to correct what the author percieves as "flaws" in CivII which are all minor issues. It operates under the principle that all players, AI included, should be equal, and that the AI should not cheat. This is why it features the ability to right your own AI routines, in addition to the robust AI already supported. I sure can't beat it.

Description: It's a Mulitplayer Turn-Based Strategy Game. You can compare it to Risk or Europa Universalis (tho it's more difficult then risk and less difficult then EU). The new version has been running for a year now, but it's based on an old boardgame. It used to be 100% free, now you just can't make your own clan and you can't play SP campaigns if you don't pay, but that's not needed anyway, it's about the MP. Next to that you can get a free upgrade to full membership simply by "advertising the game" (that's having a sig with your stats, like I do).

Description: A fairly old action sidescrolling shooter, first made for MS-DOS as shareware, but has recently become free and works under Windows, with only slight changes to the DOS original. Think Alien vs Predator minus the marines. Light on plot and story, still very fun - makes you feel like you're back at the arcades. Comes with it's own editor for new levels if you would like to make them.

Penumbra
Homepage (http://frictionalgames.com/?q=penumbra)
OS: Windows
Open Source: No
Description: A completely free first person adventure/horror game. The game is created by Frictional Studios and is intended as a demonstration of their new physics technology. The physics really are suberb and puts the likes of Valve's source engine and the Havok physics system to shame. The game is set in a haunted underground base in Greenland. The main character discovers the base whilst looking for clues about the wherabouts of their father. Penumbra involves plenty of puzzles that put the physics system to full use, as well as action-packed moments involving advanced AI and lots of dynamite. Plenty of parallels can be drawn between this and Doom 3, Thief, and any other remotely scary game involving lots of dark claustrophic interiors. The puzzles are excellent and the graphics are good enough to rival the latest next-gen titles.

With this thread I hope to start a .Org collection of the best free software - both freeware and open source.Excellent initiative and worthy of its own sticky, albeit maybe in another forum.

My suggestions:

You get that uncanny feeling someone is hijacking your computer, let Hitman run in safe mode. It’s a cold-blooded killer and it gives you a full report afterwards.

Since OpenOffice does graphing, calculating, and all of the random stuff that MS Office does, I think it's a mistake to put it under "word processing." Then again, it's the only open source office replacement software I'm aware of, so maybe it gets its own category. "Office," perhaps?

Oh, and I did a little digging about Firefox, since the question mark bothers me. The only official releases of the 'fox are for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. That's it. There are ports, there are betas, there's other stuff floating around, but I think we can kill the question mark with a clean conscience.

This is now my official Faovite Thread(TM) of the entire Org. :2thumbsup:

Hello.

I bring you new goodies.
Do you hate the :furious3: realplayer as I do?
Imo the realplayer behaves like a virus. It always tries to reinstall itself
after numerous deinstallations. It can be a severe pain for those using the AOL-software (I don't but have made my experience). Additionally it comes
with tons of ads and godknowswhatelse. It's an ugly pest.
The quicktime player isn't that evil but annoying nonetheless.
The supported formats .ram and .mov etc. are essential on the internet and you don't wanna miss the possiblity to play them. So what to do?
Use the free alternatives. It's that easy.

Real Alternative 1.46
Freeware
OS: Windows
Open Source: no?
Description: Real Alternative will allow you to play RealMedia files without having to install RealPlayer/RealOne Player.
Homepage: www.free-codecs.com/download/Real_Alternative.htm

QuickTime Alternative 1.68 final
Freeware
OS: Windows
Open Source: no?
Description: QuickTime Alternative will allow you to play QuickTime files (.mov, .qt and other extensions) without having to install the official QuickTime Player. It also supports QuickTime content that is embedded in webpages.
Homepage: http://www.free-codecs.com/QuickTime_Alternative_download.htm

Both alternatives make use of teh old Media Player Classic:

- Media Player Classic [version 6.4.8.7]: this is a full-featured player which has internal decoding support for DVD, MPEG-2, MP3, MP2, AAC, AC3 and DTS. It also has internal support for opening Matroska and Ogg containers. Media Player Classic is also capable of playing QuickTime and RealMedia content if those codecs are installed.

K-Lite Codec Pack

Homepage : www.codecguide.com
Category : Codec Pack
What's the deal : Most of you must be pretty familiar with playback issues when it comes to different kinds of files (Especially .avi's). This superior pack that is generally updated and coming with Media Player classic within will be installed after a fresh system installation, and you'll nearly never need an additional search for a codec. The installer comes with several options that increase and add more detail level to what kind of codecs you'd like to install.

The point is if you already have installed any codecs or codec packs like this, uninstall them before trying this. This is vital for a less problematic OS afterwards. Best time is right after you fresh OS install as I said above.

The website has K-Lite Codec Pack, Mega Codec Pack, Quick Time Alternative and Real Alternative. Yeah the recent alternative thingies that were liked a lot are originally hosted here. And Mega Codec Pack is K-Lite Codec Pack + QT Alt. Player + R Alt. Player

KNOPPIX is a bootable Live system on CD or DVD, consisting of a representative collection of GNU/Linux software, automatic hardware detection, and support for many graphics cards, sound cards, SCSI and USB devices and other peripherals. KNOPPIX can be used as a productive Linux system for the desktop, educational CD, rescue system, or adapted and used as a platform for commercial software product demos. It is not necessary to install anything on a hard disk. Due to on-the-fly decompression, the CD can have up to 2 GB of executable software installed on it (over 8GB on the DVD "Maxi" edition).
Comment: It's very popular as a rescue system and brings a lot of tools and it's not only suitable for advanced users.

It's a good way to test linux without installing it.

The next one I downloaded for my girlfriend who is an avid patience player. Those of you who have tried to

it's almost impossible to find anything other than 123freepatience and likewise crap.

Those are nasty bits of malware that other software has difficulty getting rid of.
My fathers PC got infected by the initial round of SpywareStrike, nothing I tried helped & Smitrem had a fix several days before any other malware/spyware vendors.

I'm looking for a program that can help me clean up the junk on my comp and free up my memory space. Can you guys recommend me one?

Though it will be off topic, I can recommend you a system tools suite that is shareware. Tune Up Utilities 2006 (http://www.tune-up.com/) is the best tool suite around that can do even more than you would need, littlelostboy. Sometimes such programs lead to worsening rather than improvement and maintenance of your system - System Mechanic is a good example for such annoywares-, but Tune Up never irritates your system while doing its job. I tried a couple of such suites, Tune Up Utilities is the best by far.

But as I said it's a shareware and the trial version you can download from the link I gave is valid and fully functional for 30 days.

Hope this helps :2thumbsup:

Ridiculous. This thread deserves better.

Ridiculous. This thread deserves better.

Firstly, this is in the Popular Threads link in order to keep the stickies at a minimum and make the page user friendly.

The Hardware Review thread is on it's own for no other reason that hopping people will take notice and contribute to what could be a handy resource for all of us.

But I guess the main reason this thread is "buried" in the Popular Threads sticky is because I have yet to hear someone ask nicely to have it stickied on it's own. ~;p

I kept meaning to post here and actually ask if this could be made an exception and get stickied before the last few posts. The main reason imho, is that this thread will only flourish if people see it and contribute and of course there's much less chance of that happening with it getting buried like this.

So, pwetty pwease?

A search engine for your machine. It's way better than the integrated
windows search. I've tested it for the last month and I've to say that it
saves a lot of time if you have thousands of pdf's and html's to search.

Copernic Desktop Search

CDS also conducts a desktop search of your browser history, favorites, and contacts.

Don't know how courageous or tech-savy you are.
The Knoppix live CD brings a Partition Magic clone called qtpart. I've heard it's easy to use but when starting the CD via qemu it fails to mount my hd at all. And after half an hour trying to mount it I gave up. I guess you need to boot right into it.

Battle for Wesnoth:

Give ChaosLord the credit for this one- he posted it in the Arena (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=62508).

A friend introduced me to this game a few days ago and since a search for it turned up nothing here I figured I would post about it. The game is a TBS as stated is kinda reminiscent of the TBS/RPG games found on consoles like Ogre Battle/Vandal Hearts/Final Fantasy Tactics/etc... The graphics are 2d and dated but the gameplay itself is rather fun and there seems to be alot of campaigns available as well as a good multiplayer community for the game. Its also free and meant to stay that way apparently, so its nice not to worry about having to pay for a beta game. Anyway, if anyone is interested check out the game at http://www.wesnoth.org.

Edit: Description and features for the game, taken from its website.

What is battle for Wesnoth?
_______________________
The Battle for Wesnoth is a turn-based strategy game with a fantasy theme.

Build up a great army, gradually turning raw recruits into hardened veterans. In later games, recall your toughest warriors and form a deadly host against whom none can stand! Choose units from a large pool of specialists, and hand-pick a force with the right strengths to fight well on different terrains against all manner of opposition.

Fight to regain the throne of Wesnoth, of which you are the legitimate heir, or use your dread power over the Undead to dominate the land of mortals, or lead your glorious Orcish tribe to victory against the humans who dared despoil your lands … Wesnoth has many different sagas waiting to be played out. You can create your own custom units, and write your own scenarios – or even full-blown campaigns. You can also challenge your friends – or strangers – and fight in epic multi-player fantasy battles.

Features:
________
Build up a formidable fighting force, starting from a single leader and a small amount of gold.
Over 200 unit types in six major factions, all with distinctive abilities, weapons and spells.
Experienced units gain powerful new abilities as they advance.
Several multi-player options available, including internet play.
Scores of different custom-designed maps, and unlimited random maps.
Hundreds of campaign scenarios available for download via a simple in-game procedure.
'Fog of war' feature available for a true test of generalship.
Sophisticated mark-up language lets advanced users make their own maps, factions or campaigns.
Excellent language support – 20 different languages currently available.
GNU/Linux, Windows, MacOSX, BeOS, Solaris, FreeBSD, OpenBSD and NetBSD compatible.
For being Open-Source/home brew, I think this game is just great. :2thumbsup:

Penumbra

Category: Gaming
Homepage: http://frictionalgames.com/?q=penumbra
OS: MS Windows 2K/XP
Open Source: No (However there is plenty of support for modification)

Phew! Updated! :sweatdrop: Sorry I took so long getting around to it.

Thanks for the contributions and corrections.

DukeofSerbia, I've added the categories you specified except for OS. I want there to be at least 2 items per category, and I don't think we'll have another candidate for OS. I don't want to just put more Linux distros on the list, either. I think Knoppix will be enough.

Also, you guys are killing me - so much great stuff but you format it just a little bit off from what I put it into, making this into a lot of work. Thanks to those who post in my format and save me time and effort, and please please please just copy my format if you aren't doing so.

Out of curiousity, is there a way to create a link that will scroll down to a specific part of a post? IE, a link that says "Gaming" that when you click on it you jump down to the gaming part of the post.

----

I've been thinking. Would it be feasible for people to "vote" for software they've used? IE, you'd post:

Mozilla Firefox +1
GIMP -1

If you've used both, liked firefox, and disliked GIMP? I would then add the totals and put them in the entries. Votes would not count if they were for a program you submitted, and it would be honor system. What do you guys think?

GParted
Homepage (http://gparted.sourceforge.net/index.php)
Open Source: Yes
OS: runs under Linux, handles filesystems ext2/3, FAT16/32, hfs, jfs, NTFS, reiserfs, ufs, xfs
Description:
GParted is the Gnome Partition Editor application.

A hard disk is usually subdivided into one or more partitions. These partitions are normally not re-sizable (making one larger and the adjacent one smaller) The purpose of GParted is to allow the individual to take a hard disk and change the partition organization therein, while preserving the partition contents.

GParted is an industrial-strength package for creating, destroying, resizing, moving, checking and copying partitions, and the filesystems on them. This is useful for creating space for new operating systems, reorganizing disk usage, copying data residing on hard disks and mirroring one partition with another (disk imaging).
This tool can be downloaded as an ISO image and burned onto a bootable Linux CD for partition management. It's essentially a open source clone of Partition Magic, with a myriad of filesystems supported. Haven't tried it yet, so I'm not quite ready to sing it's praises, but I've got a shortage on my C: drive right now, and giving $70 to Symantec just to move over 5 GB from my D: drive does not sit very well with me. Anyone else use this tool yet?

Email is initially sent to your email server, where it stays until you download it to your computer. AFAIK, MS email software doesn't have any way of checking your email without actually downloading it from the server. Mailwasher gets around that, by downloading the headers of the emails on your email server, before you decide whether to download them or delete them. This can save both bandwidth and provide security by letting you delete suspicious emails before they get to your computer. NB. Pegasus Mail has these functionalities built in.

Alien Arena

Description:From the game's website:

Do you like fast paced deathmatch? How about rich, colorful, arcadelike atmospheres? How about...retro Sci Fi? Then you're going to love what Alien Arena 2007 has in store for you! This game combines some of the very best aspects of such games as Quake III and Unreal Tournament and wraps them up with a retro alien theme, while adding tons of original ideas to make the game quite unique. Single player just involves you and bots in various deathmatches. But the game also supports online multiplay which adds deathball, CTF, and other team matches in addition to the deathmatch free-for-alls. Good, mindless fun.

If anyone has the interest/ability to run a server, this could be a fun one for orgahs.

This is a freeware tool that allows to monitor several temperatures, but more importantly to reduce the speed of CPU, PSU and case fans. My standard CPU fan was running at ~2600 RPM and made a lot of noise. Reduced it to 75%-1800RPM (make sure that the temperature is still in the safe zone). It's running at the same idle temperature and makes much less noise, will run Prime95 to test load.

Edit: 50-52% load, temperature is fine, fanspeed increased to 2140 (temperature controlled).

Btw, regarding my last post, I have a request. If you know of any Notepad-ish editor WITH tabbed file browsing and no other features, please let me know. I remember I used to use one that was perfect, but I forgot which one it was.

one I've been using with school that sounds the same.

There's cdex (http://sourceforge.net/projects/cdexos/) from the front page. Another application that might be useful is mp3gain (http://mp3gain.sourceforge.net/), which normalises volume on your mp3s.

(The website you gave the link of has some pieces which are not actually "abandoned" by its producers. Abandonware refers to titles on those the producers do not claim a commercial and legal ownership anymore -therefore being free to share. Sorry, I had to cut the link out. - LEN)

Updated! Sorry that took so long. I got lazy. :book:

As well as adding the last dozen programs posted, I fixed Gaim which has been renamed Pidgin.

I also added Spring, a really amazing open source RTS engine. I highly recommend that you take a look at it. It's based on Total Annihilation, and in my opinion it's better than Supreme Commander, TA's "spiritual successor".

There are a half-dozen TA-based mods, which vary in content and style. It's fairly stable, although sometimes multiplayer has synching errers - though I haven't played enough to say. There are a couple of AI's for bots out there, too, although they aren't Napoleons.

As for content, I don't know how the TA mods compare to TA since I never played, but in general the content is varied and decent looking. A little low-poly, but that's true of a lot of open source games.

Oh man, Krogoths.... :laugh4:

I just had a most awesome skirmish game. My base was almost totally destroyed and under heavy shelling when ole'Kroggy finally arrived on the scene- his gantry was among the last structures still standing. Then, it was payback time. :whip:

The crater in the bottom right is their former cloak-able fusion reactorand in the upper right is their commander, who died about 2 seconds after this screenshot. :2thumbsup:

They've done a really good job with the game- I'd like some more UI improvements though. It'd be neat if someone re-created the original campaigns too.

Which mod is that - AA?
It's just a standard install with the SpringSP addon to make it easier to start single player skirmish games. The AI is 'AAI'. The standard game already has a zillion units, so I didn't see the need to add more yet- but I could use some more variety in maps.

Krogoths are so nasty. Multiple nukes don't scare them. :book::yes:
It was really edge-of-your-seat stuff at the end. My base was trashed and they were lobbing nukes in at random. I had to reclaim many of my remaining structures for metal to feed the Kroggy and still didn't know if I'd make it long enough. I did. :2thumbsup:

Edit: If you never saw it before, here (http://www.fileuniverse.com/Total_Annihilation_Mirror/totala/index.html) is a mirror of the original TA site.

Ummm, anyone else have problems with indirect fire? I used to like training my heavy artillery on choke points and just having it constantly fire in an area. But Spring seems really finicky about indirect fire- artillery either won't attack the area at all, will only fire once, ect.

Or am I doing something wrong?

Is there any free software -- with many options and such if possible (such as triggering to open a port when needed and closing it when not needed) -- that allows one to simplify port-forwarding (in regard to programs that need it)?

(Reading through guides bloated with terminology and long texts and having to do so many things require too much time and effort and what makes it worse is when you can't find a guide for your specific router model. Arrrgh... if success doesn't arrive soon they won't have to try to kill me in the future because I will have already died trying to figure out port-forwarding without the proper resources. I came across a few file managers. I thought I'd share my findings with you.

FreeCommander (http://www.freecommander.com/)
OS: Windows
Open Source: No
Description: FreeCommander is an easy-to-use alternative to the standard windows file manager. The program helps you with daily work in Windows. Here you can find all the necessary functions to manage your data stock. You can take FreeCommander anywhere - just copy the installation directory on a CD, USB-Stick or even a floppy disk - and you can even work with this program on a foreign computer.

xplorer² lite (http://zabkat.com/x2lite.htm)
OS: Windows

Description: The lightweight version of xplorer² is not a crippled unusable salesman of the professional version. I'm surprised this one isn't in here yet:
JkDefrag (http://www.kessels.com/JkDefrag/)
OS: Windows
OpenSource?: Yes

Free (released under the GNU General Public License) disk defragment and optimize utility for Windows 2000/2003/XP/Vista/X64. Completely automatic and very easy to use, fast, low overhead, with several optimization strategies, and can handle floppies and USB disks/sticks. Included are a Windows version, a commandline version (for scheduling by the task scheduler or for use from administrator scripts), a screensaver version, a DLL library (for use from programming languages), and versions for Windows X64.

I just started using this less than a week ago, but so far, it completely pwns the built-in Windows defrag on many levels.

Seems a good free defragmenter.

UltraDefrag (http://ultradefrag.sourceforge.net/)
OS: Windows NT
Open Source: Yes
Description: UltraDefrag is powerful Open Source defragmentation tool for Windows NT. It is very fast, because the defragmenting is done by kernel-mode driver. They are three interfaces to them: graphical, console and native. The GUI is very useful, because it represents your filesystem visually as a color coded cluster map. The console is another option for those that prefer the command line. It is also allows you to run UltraDefrag from the task scheduler and scripts. Finally, the native executable will run at boot time in a manner similar to chkdsk.

The design of UltraDefrag is very simple. There are no skins, localization, or animations. It is a small and powerful program!

It can be used on Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Server 2003,Windows Vista and all of the 64-bit editions of Windows.

My stuff here... Sorry, haven't read the whole thread so there will be possibly plenty of reposts:

avast! Antivirus (http://www.avast.com). Personal Edition is free and enough.

DOS Box (http://dosbox.sourceforge.net)

Open Office (http://www.openoffice.org)

Google Earth (http://earth.google.com)

ImgBurn (www.imgburn.com/). I've dumped Nero for it thanks to fellow ORGahs!

Microsoft Keyboard Layout Creator (http://www.microsoft.com/globaldev/tools/msklc.mspx). Free for MS customers, that is users of an MS OS. I've used it to create customized Q (my default) and Arabic keyboards. More will follow. ~;)

Mozilla SeaMonkey (http://www.seamonkey-project.org/) and Firefox (http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/). With many extensions such as BB Code, Password Generator, text/plain, Flash Got and more...

PDF Creator (http://sourceforge.net/projects/pdfcreator/). Installs as a printer and creates PDF documents from anything that can print! No tags, bookmarks or stuff though. Plain PDFs. Setting permissions, passwords and fiddling with output quality is possible. Apparently the only thing it can't do is adding bookmarks and tags sort of stuff.

Spybot - Search & Destroy (http://www.safer-networking.org/). AdAware is garbage. This one does its job. :rtwyes:

VLC Media Player (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/). Great little-looking giant that can play anything... Almost anything except Real Media, for which I use:

Real Alternative (http://codecguide.com/about_real.htm). Plays Real Media without all the ads and rubbish. Buggy though, and has a clumsy interface, but does its job well most of the time.

Winamp (http://www.winamp.com). With the widest range of supported formats, internally or via hundreds of plugins, it's still my preference for playing audio.

Trillian (http://www.trillian.cc). Has a free version which, the last time I looked, was enough for all instant messaging needs, and a pay version that is different in heaven knows what. Nothing concrete on their website. You can use it for ICQ, AIM, MSN, YIM and multiple IRC channels all at once. Too bad I got too much used to MSN's pretty smileys and all, and neglected this baby.

dBPowerAmp Music Converter (http://www.dbpoweramp.com). The free version does everything you want and you don't even know you would want, except for MP3 en/decoding. Who needs MP3 anyway, when you have FLAC (lossless) and OGG (lossy)? :inquisitive: However, I'm a proud paid customer for something like $20 and free lifetime upgrades.

Scala (http://www.xs4all.nl/~huygensf/scala/). For music nerds only! You can analyse, build, edit and do many things you wouldn't imagine yourself doing with all kinds of musical scales, tunings and more. The author is one of the very few lucky online friends who has had the chance to meet Mouzafphaerre in real life. Proof that I really exist and am not a bot. He would make a good ORGah 'coz he's Dutch! :laugh4:

Homepage (http://kmeleon.sourceforge.net/)
OS: Windows 95/NT 4.0 or never

OS: Windows, but originally on DOS.
Open Source: Not sure, could someone check for me. (I accidentally removed it from my PC) :uneasy:
Description: A fairly old action sidescrolling shooter, first made for MS-DOS as shareware, but has recently become free and works under Windows, with only slight changes to the DOS original. Dink Smallwood
Homepage (http://www.rtsoft.com/dink//)
OS: Windows
Open Source: Yes
Description: An isometric RPG set in a medieval-fantasy kind of world. Outdated graphics-wise, but very fun. It will keep you enjoyed for hours on end. I can't say much more, but it's so full of humour that I'd get it just for the laughs it will bring. Trust me, you'll enjoy it and I guarantee that you will smile at least once during the course of the game. I managed to get the game when it first became freeware on CD form, this was before the turn of the century - and I've still got it on my PC to this day (26-Feb-08).

(This all comes under Gaming of course) :wink2:

Sorry for the late response to your question Alexander. I haven't checked this thread for a while ~:(
How much memory do those kids eat up, and how fast do they start up? I only need one Firefox performance-wise. I don't really know in all honesty. It's essentially what the website says although it doesn't really provide any statistics. Both Camino and K-melon are based on the platform's native API rather than using Mozilla clunky XUL, so it kind of makes logical sense.

Flock is not another Firefox, although it is based on Firefox. It's like Firefox, but with integration into a variety of social networking sites such as Digg, Facebook and MySpace. It also includes webmail integration with Yahoo! Mail and, more recently, Gmail.

Sunbird is like Thunderbird, totally unaffiliated in terms of purpose with Firefox. It's designed as a PIM (personal information manager) which can be used to perform calendaring tasks, set reminders and organise a schedule.

As a readability suggestion, why not put the first post's software lists under the various categories in "spoil" tags? That way the reader can expand the category of software that they are looking for without the need to scroll thru everything. The list is getting pretty massive and that might make it easier to find what you're looking for.

Just my 2 cents.:2cents:

Oooh, that sounds really ... useful ...

Or you could use the [ex] tag, which is even better, since it preserves all of your formatting and doesn't introduce the box effect or the wacky italics everywhere ...

In the FOSS category you could add Iceweasel which is the Debian (default) version of Firefox (ergo: FOSS). Linux.

Okay, I found this Awesome Site (http://www.giveawayoftheday.com/about/)

Basically, you can get normally licensed software for free every day. The site apparently pays the developers for how ever many licenses or is given how ever many licenses for people to download from.

Updated.

Tellos Athenaios - I didn't add Iceweasel because I wasn't sure if you could get it separately.

As for the Giveaways of the Day, I didn't feel like including them somewhere. ~;p I used to follow them both a while ago, but both often offer trial versions or temporary liscense (or did back then). Plus a fair share of the software seemed mediocre, in my inexpert opinion. There's some good stuff sometimes, it just felt too few and far between to me.

And I added foobar2000 (http://www.foobar2000.org/) as an audio media player. It's like winamp without the bloat and with incredible configurability. I'm loving it. :2thumbsup:

OS: Windows XP, Vista, 7.
Open source: Uh, don't think so. I might be a bit confused on the exact definition of "open source" though.

Enables you to build, uh, "fences" for any desktop icons. You group them together in a box-ish sorta thing on the desktop. Enables better organizing of desktop icons. Main thing that I like about it is that with a simple double click on the left click on the desktop, any and every icon in the fences "disappear". To bring them back, just another simple double click.

Has anyone mentioned DFX audio enhancer? As someone who doesn't have a huge amount of audio knowledge, it works really well. I notice significant improvement with this. There is a pay version but the free one works decently too. It just opens up as soon as you open your media player of choice (supports windows media player, winamp, realplayer I think and maybe some others.)

Like I said before there's a free and pay version, the free version isn't a trial it just has limited capabilities (but it's still worth it as there is definitely a noticeable improvement in sound quality.

WinDirStat (http://windirstat.info/)
Open Source: Yes

WinDirStat is a disk usage statistics viewer and cleanup tool for Microsoft Windows (all current variants).
WinDirStat reads the whole directory tree once and then presents it in three useful views:

* The directory list, which resembles the tree view of the Windows Explorer but is sorted by file/subtree size,
* The treemap, which shows the whole contents of the directory tree straight away,
* The extension list, which serves as a legend and shows statistics about the file types.
I got tired of poking around on my games drive trying to find out where all the space has gone- so I downloaded this. I fell in love instantly when it showed me several gigs worth of temporary patch files buried deep in a games install directory. :2thumbsup:

Here's a sample image of how it displays drive info:
https://img694.imageshack.us/img694/6638/windirstatc.jpg
The individual blocks represent files- the size of the block indicates its relative size. Directories are color coded.

Nevermind, it is simple as long as you download the zip version in binary. handy little gadget, it records links clicked, characters typed and isn't caught by anti-spyware. The only problem I'm having is removing the donations screen from startup. If I was able to use the source version it wouldn't be as difficult to remove it. THanks!

I have always been the sort to keep many Internet browser windows/tabs open at a time, even during those years when memory capacity and IE confined me to no more than 25 tabs before the desktop froze or crashed.

First, it was an extensive folder system of IE Favorites.

Then, it was txt files or email drafts packed with categorized and annotated links.

Then, after Chrome and 8GB of RAM let me push past 100 tabs, it was periodic browser crashes followed by tearful History archaeology to salvage what I could.

A few years ago, I adopted Chrome extensions such as Session Buddy to keep track of closed and open tabs, and that was a godsend.

Nevertheless, memory leakage would inevitably bring my OS session to 90+% physical memory usage. While not necessarily leading to lag, freezing, or crashes much of the time, I was still left with the problem of being unable to run anything other than utilities and minimally-intensive games without closing my browser first.

When I got that brand new computer a year ago with 16GB of RAM, I could comfortably run 150+ tabs and most-anything else simultaneously, but maintaining the browser (I usually keep the computer running on Standby when not in use, or Hibernate for longer periods) would eventually eat through uncommitted memory. In the end, I would still have to regularly go pruning in task managers to get respite for fresh work.

Now, for the first time in a decade of personal memory use, I asked myself: shouldn't there be something to optimize browser memory usage without obliging me to manually fiddle with memory allocations - or worse, actually compromise on my active tabs?

So I did a search and picked one of the first things I came across (http://sourceforge.net/projects/browseoptimizer/). A simple and undocumented tool, but it makes a tremendous difference. Where previously Chrome at 150 tabs would stabilize around 10-11GB usage, with occasional spikes to absolute ceiling depending on my activities, it now is contained at half that (i.e. 5-6 GB). This is all without Adblock or Noscript, mind you. I dropped Skyrim a month after I got my new rig because, as tedious as all the modding had been, it was even more tedious to keep my playing and my browsing largely separate. Now I can comfortably play Skyrim without special arrangements.

A good step IMO. I'll probably get around to adopting a more rigorous optimizer at some point - in a year? As for user hygiene, well...

You could close tabs when you are done with them. You don't need to read 150 odd at the same time!

Husar
02-08-2016, 17:08
I wonder how you manage 150 tabs, I would imagine you either have problems clicking them at the top (if they're all there at once) and remembering what is open in which one anyway or you'd have multiple lines cluttering most of your screen, or have to scroll left and right through the list. Whatever it is, it sounds like just using well-sorted bookmarks or quick-select options would be faster.

I'm never done. Many stay open for months before I'm done, or compromise, or give up. In terms of a Ship of Theseus, you might call this the same set of windows I had at some point in 2013 (App Data copied over during computer replacement).

On a 24" monitor, the tabs in a single window aren't uncomfortably crowded unless there are, say, more than 115. I use multiple windows at a time - minimally a second window for prurient content...

Generally, I have a good idea of what stretches of tabs are what sort of content, when I opened them, and what I need to do with them. For example, I keep my email pages, forum pages, and any other important services involving user accounts, adjacent to each other near the left edge of all the tabs.

Whatever it is, it sounds like just using well-sorted bookmarks or quick-select options would be faster.

It's not - I have the experience.
