I didn't think it would happen in my lifetime. (http://news.com.com/Dell+opts+for+AMDs+Opteron/2100-1006_3-6074059.html?tag=nefd.top) Dell has finally allowed some customers to buy computers without Intel inside. Now if only they would let us buy desktops with AMD64s ...

About time, eh? Good on Dell- I'm sure Intel tried to do everything within their power to stop them.

I'm not sure AMD could supply Dell with enough processors for a desktop line at the moment. Until that capacity is available, I'm sure Dell will stick with Intel. But they have a foot in the door, which is a good start.

Unfortunate about the timing though. If it had come a year or two ago, would've really been a chance for AMD to make major inroads in business servers. But with the new Intel chips on the way, AMD's performance advantage is about to evaporate.

The timing seems odd to me. Jumping on to AMD just as Intel is about to drop the netburst architecture in exchange for something competitive.

In other news, the Universe imploded 5 minutes ago.

Seriously though, this is quite amazing. No more annoying 'Intel Inside' music or anything at the end of Dell adverts.

AND Dell has also recently acquired Alienware Computers, Inc, as a stand-alone non-co-branded subsidiary. Alienware has routinely offered AMD as an option, from the beginning. These developments may be related, I think.

Speaking of the Dell/Alienware thing, I've seen a bunch of amusing mock-ups of the proposed new logos. Can't find the best one I saw a few weeks ago, but here are a couple:
