Imperia Romana :: Features List

It may not be out yet, but we all know that BI is going to be little more than a load of fancy new features, bug fixes and the bear bones of a Late Empire themed game. We intend to rectify this by being the first and fore-most realism modification. We're going to basically evaluate and change every possible thing in BI that isn't historical accurate. From the demo we've already seen that many units are no-where near accurate, and will face the wrath of our modding talents...

Here's a run-down of our goals for Imperia Romana Version (IR) 1.0

-Remove all "fantasy" units

-Include new models and skins to replace innacurate ones in BI. (At the LEAST we're making sure those deathmatch-esque unit colours are getting cut).

-Totally rebalance the combat system: We're assuming that BI is going to be as random as RTW, and we're going to change this, making sure that units behave as closely to how they did in the period. For this we will be working closely with Darth and his famous formations mod.

-Complete transformation of the Campaign Map, changing or adding cities, redrawing borders etc.

-All factions unlocked

-New Unit Descriptions [if needed], once again historical accuracy kept in mind

Eventually we intend to release a version 2.0 which will overhaul everything in the game including:

-Extended Map (if it's not already in 1.0)
-More Units
-More skins/models
-Movies!
-Mod specific graphics [loading screens, menu video etc]

Eventually Versions 3.0+ will have

-Full AoR Recruitment System.
-Complete Re-modelling and Skins.
-Possibly new factions.
-New Mercenaries

Features that we intend to feature throughout the versions:

-New Historical/Custom Battles
-Lots of Languages Available for the Mod!
-We're going to completely re-evaluate the map: Having only 72 provinces is ludicrous. This means more cities, redrawn provinces etc.

Imperii Romanvs :: All-Star Development Team List

Our development team features a whole list of famous developers known in the RTW-mod world. But that doesn't mean we are not looking for more enthousiastic people to join our ranks! Our intention to create the number 1 BI mod and keep that position may sound a bit unrealistic but with your help we might be able to realize our dream!

Also, note that this mod is unique in setup because it is completely leaderless. It is all democracy, the team gets the say.

When I mentioned "Depending on what year, a third Roman Faction (in Africa)?", In the MTW mod Fall of Rome, there is 3 Roman Factions Western, Eastern and African, and the Romano-African faction would be in the Carthagian/Numidian area.

I'm now the head of the research department for Imperia Romana. Upon reviewing the current team we have together I have made a number of conclusions:

1) Little Organisation

2) Few people who are actually studying/have studied an area as part of a career/education. Basically however useful they are, people who have a few Osprey books are not enough (and I would still say that people can submit them at will, since any kind of publication on the matter is useful in some way.

3) VERY poor motivation. We dont have any researchers really doing much

4) Research is the first step in making the mod. As a result I need to get this up and running ASAP.

I'm now centering the research around "specialists" in fields. For example rez is now our specialist in the Sassanids. He will be the main person responsible for gathering together our information. He's studying Persia specifically, so this is his field of study, and as a result is perfect for the position.

I know we wont be able to find people for all of the factions, but the more people we have who have access to the relevant knowledge and information, and who are accomplished historians the better. I know we wont have a full team of university students/graduates on every faction, so I will look at anyone really, providing they can provide evidence of extended knowledge of a faction/ region. Currently I need people for the following catagories:

* The Late Roman Empire (circa 363ad-476ad, possibly up to 580ad eventually)
* The Germanic tribes during the era (VERY important)
* The People of the Steppes
* Sassanid Persia (I already have one, but the more the better)
* Britain during the fall/ after the romans left

So if you feel you are highly competant in any of these catagories, feel free to join our IRC channel, PM me or post here.

A little about research practice:

I will be setting goals on a Sunday night (say about 8pm GMT), which will have a completion date of the following Sunday morning. I will then try to gather all the researchers I can to post what they have. I'll put this into a standard format, that will enable the development team to begin looking at implementation.

Ok gentlemen, this is a feature we would like to ask. It's a script that would allow in a single click to recruit a full army. Of course, the final product would be a bit more complex than that (but for the player it will be extremely easy).

The idea is that you'll have to build a certain building in the queue. Once the building is finished, the advisor pops up and asks "Do you want to recruit the Legion (or army or whatever depending on the faction)". Then it's the usual progress with scripts, meaning you have to click the show me how button in order to run the script.

The composition of the army will be decided according to what buildings you have in the city. So a city with only a third level barracks will be able to recruit a certain number of infantry troops (let's say 5 hastati, 5 principes and 3 triarii (also note I give the example as if it was implemented in RTW)) in a single click. If you have a cavalry stables you'll automacitally get cavalry, archery range for skirmishers, eventually siege ultimately leading to a 19 units army (maybe 20 cuz some things are still under discussion) recruited in one shot.

Now, you might ask me what's different from setting recruitment time to 0 turns? Well I'll tell you this. First of all, 0 recruit time is cool but you're limited to 8 or 9 units per turn. This script will allow to get as many as 19-20 (could even be more but we don't want to exagerate either hehe) in a single turn. Also, there's the cost issue for this army you'll be able to raise in one turn. 0 turn recruitment doesn't cost much. What we intend to do is to leave recruitment time as it is but give the option to the player to recruit a full army in one turn (maybe two, tbd) only at a very high cost. We intend to exponentially raise the cost of the army to better reflect the fact that if you recruited all units one at a time, you'd face cumulative upkeep cost of every troop that you create etc.

That's the idea basically. Now, I was told some people already mentionned that possibility though I'm not sure if they actually did the script. Our guy ararax (on TWC) made this script for us and might be willing to share it with other mods too. I want to thank him for his work on that idea (though the script isn't completed now it's still in a development phase) and also thank any other member of any RTW community who also had that idea.

Now I would like you who just read my post to give feedback on the idea. Try to remain constructive though, or simply positive ;)

Cheers!!!

Achilles!

So that's possible? I sorta figured so. I had actually been thinking absentmindedly about this recently...

My next question is: can the AI take advantage of this? I don't think it can, which seems a little cheesy. The AI is already a drooling idiot: it will only do worse if it scrounges and saves to build up a decent army, march it into your lands, and the next turn face an army twice its size.

Kicking the poor AI when it's down...

And I'd like a little more details about the cost factors, but that seems to be the best way to balance this in the AI's favor - make it outrageously expensive...

3.14
09-16-2005, 01:46
Yes well the idea I had about the cost was that for example a unit of say basic legionnaire costs 400 to recruit and 100 upkeep. If you'd recruit 20 legionnaires one by one each turn, it would take 20 turns right?

meaning the first legionnaire would have his upkeep paid 20 times before the army is complete and ready to move (supposing you keep all your troops static until the army is full) so you'd have a basic cost of 8000 (for recruitment cost) and then 2000(for the first guy's upkeep, then 1900 for the next one's, 1800, 1700.

And if I calculated right (or even if I'm about right), this means that a 20 legionnaires army with 400,100 for recruit cost and upkeep, respectively, would cost : around 29 000$

Alexander the Pretty Good
09-16-2005, 03:03
Sounds right. Will the number and type of units vary?

And are there plans to help out the AI to counteract this very powerful tool?

Can we have ancient heros?

e.g Attila the hun.

and prehaps turns done in months not years or 6 months, I mean many of the worlds great conquerors did thier conquering in a matter og years not decades like u have to in the total war games.

maybe units that dismount and remount?

That you can train etc?

09-16-2005, 03:47
This can be done through some more scripting unless I'm very wrong. I might have to check with our scripter though. Luckilly, the AI will be able to use this tool which will increase the challenge. And also keep in mind that that 29000$ is just an example with the recruitment costs and upkeeps that I randomly decided! but with higher recruitment costs and upkeeps, we might end up with armies worth like 50 000$!

09-16-2005, 15:29
alpaca ---> I'm pretty sure there's other ways to get them to use it. IIRC, our scripter told me there was a way to make the AI use the feature under certain conditions.

NeonGod ---> it is already, or will soon be part of the script. We wanted to add a general pop drop, meaning the army won't drain population only from the city it recruits but from every city proportionnaly

Hey Imperia Romana fans!

After weeks of inactivity, and some members not being around, we've pinned the problems with managment on a lack of direction and leadership. So, after an election on the team forums, we'd like to announce that I, Stalins Ghost is the new Imperia Romana project director. I'll be handling the main direction of the mod, and will be chiefly in charge of recruitment.

I'm hoping this will usher in a new era for the mod, bringing in some real progress, building on the ideas and research that was done before today. I'm looking foward to bringing the mod to you guys, and I am confidant that the new members of the team will be able to bring you the best they can.

A little about me, for those who don't really know me:
I'm currently an A-Level student, studying English Language, History and ICT, aiming for A/B Grades, in the hope of getting enough for applying to an Ancient History degree, maybe leading to a career in Journalism, or further studying Antiquity.
My sources of income, being in full time education are few, but I am currently working as a "Fresh Bread and Cakes Department Ambient" (shelf stacker)
I enjoy playing Tennis, Basketball, Rugby (although havn't in a while) and Badminton from time to time.

Within the Total War community, I've been a moderator for the RTR boards, which is probably the focal point of my experience in the community. I'm currently learning a few different skills within modding, in the hope that it will prove useful in managing, what will hopefully become a large scale production.

Right, now we've had chance to evalutation the team lately, we've decided there are two areas need more people working on:

Graphics Production (SO skinning, modelling, 2d graphics etc)
Text Editing (Unit stats are covered though) (including someone who can put models in game, which we need ASAP: I can do it- but I'm hopeless at finding mistakes in adding them lol)

If you think you're up to joining the team, feel free to PM me, or Email/MSN me at wizbangpowercrunch@hotmail.com (wierd yes...I made it when I was 12 lol)

Hey awesome mod. The Sassanid and Roman models look cool. A tentative suggestion: I've heard that some clibinarii (Roman, I assume) would chuck plumbatae at the enemies before charging in. If this was indeed the case, I think it would be quite cool to have in the mod. I suppose then there might be some heavy cavalry with bows, some with lances, and some with the darts.

Sughdian warrior is an ahistorical unit... the Sassanains best infantry would be the Daylimites (sp), a unit with a large shield, javilen or bow, and good at skirmishing (the Romans were scared of them). The sughdian warrior in BI was based off of an Osprey plate of a warrior that is in the 8th century.

I like the bigger sizes... more rebel provinces to deal with and more room to expand. Only problem I see is time to travel, but this will increase the game length so I'll make the sacrifice. I like what you do with the mountains. If you can do that with the rest of the map it will be amazing

Sahran
11-22-2005, 23:59
I wonder if you could include small towns and such as minor aesthistics to making the campaign look more populated. Right now, in BI blank, it is very vacant and seems odd, having so much empty landscape.

soibean
11-26-2005, 16:20
that would be a good idea
and would it be possible to have the towns be forts... in a defensive way the only way a player can interact with them is when they land on the town and if they are attacked while on the town the set up is as if they're doing a fort battle?

Steppe Merc

But the unit skinning for the sughdian is so great, we should use that chain mail face masks for some units at least. Because there are many pictures of that style of chain mail face covering used on sassani soldiers.

Hi Gazi
We'll still have only 21 factions but a lot of these will be playable, and much more historically accurate. Some will reappear after they've been wiped out but I can't say which ones for now, we're still working on it. ~;)

Preview 1

I'm proud to bring you the first major Imperia Romana preview, showcasing the work of a team of very talented individuals.

It's taken alot of work, effort time, blood...you get the picture.

I can't really express how happy I am with team, they've done a fantastic job, and I know they will continue to work to a very high standard, to produce a truly great mod.

This isn't all we have to show you of course...we wouldn't want to over do it!

Anyway, let the work do the talking

The Traits System

Here is Lesten's wonderful and unique traits system. Really great work mate.

https://img38.imageshack.us/img38/150/traits017ot.th.jpg (https://img38.imageshack.us/my.php?image=traits017ot.jpg)
Adopted goth family member. Class: Warrior. Many "barbarian" character tend to become warriors. The generals get one favoured command skill, usually at the cost of another. This character is at commanding cavalry but not infantry, for instance. He has obviously seen battle before and cause he's brave and scarred. He is an Arian christian, which goths usually were.

https://img95.imageshack.us/img95/8308/traits025ra.th.jpg (https://img95.imageshack.us/my.php?image=traits025ra.jpg)
Gothic inborn family member. Class: Strict leader. He has a intelligent and fertile father (or mother!) which explains his natural traits. Characters with his class are either unjust or just, and always strict... this one is more unjust.

https://img363.imageshack.us/img363/6826/traits038ww.th.jpg (https://img363.imageshack.us/my.php?image=traits038ww.jpg)
Roman adopted family member. Class: Strategist. Interesting character. A very good commander (at least for a starting character). Strategist tend to be strict but skilled (obviously he has many command traits).

https://img229.imageshack.us/img229/8716/traits045kb.th.jpg (https://img229.imageshack.us/my.php?image=traits045kb.jpg)
Roman adopted family member. Class: Strict leader. Another unjust and harsh governor. A true roman.

https://img392.imageshack.us/img392/6562/traits054bm.th.jpg (https://img392.imageshack.us/my.php?image=traits054bm.jpg)
Sassanid adopted family member. Class: Hedonist. He his very handsome, but lazy, gluttonous and gay. He loves pretty things (why he is also interested in crafts and arts). Sassanid and therefore Zoroastrian.

https://img52.imageshack.us/img52/5121/traits062zp.th.jpg (https://img52.imageshack.us/my.php?image=traits062zp.jpg)
Sassanid adopted family member. Class: Administrator. Good and skilled governor, which characters with that class tend to be. Eager to learn and a dedicated Zoroastrian.

https://img76.imageshack.us/img76/3822/traits077kk.th.jpg (https://img76.imageshack.us/my.php?image=traits077kk.jpg)
Roman adopted family member. Class: Religious converter. Wants to spread the old Roman religion again and hates Christians. He is a good speaker, as he must convince people to join his cause. He is strict but upright.

From left to right: The Pushtigbhan, Gyanavspa, Zhayedan and Sardar

The Pushtigbhan were the Sassanid Shah's elite body guard. They were heavily armed and armoured, fully capable of defending the General as he directs the flow of combat. Historically, they numbered 1000 strong in peace time, and were tasked with the defense of the capital of Ctesiphon, and consisted of the Sassanid noble elite. Peace time was limited in the Sassanid dynasty however, and these men saw no end of combat, on the many fronts of defense and offense against their many enemies.

The Gyanavspa, also known as the Peshmerga, these men were chosen specifcally for their bravery these men could be relied upon to fight like lions until their deaths. They wern't quite as richely adorned as the nobles, but these men were otherwise the zenith of the common troops.

The Zhayedan were the Sassanid equivalent to the old Achaemenid Immortals, numbering 10,000 at most times. They were again, heavily armoured and armed, fully caperble of turning the tide of the most difficult situation.

The Sardar were again Sassanid Savaran, but with a difference. Women warriors made up no small percentage of the Sassanid armies, and would have taken up positions in the lines alongside their male counterparts. Here, they are depicted as a medium (compared to other Sassanid Savaran!), with more than enough skill and equipment to match their opponents

Sassanid models/skins by Professor S

Introduction to the Sassanids, by Stalins Ghost

When, in 224 the 400 year old Parthian dynasty of Persia fell, a stronger, far more culturally Persian (as opposed to Hellenic and Persian) "Sassanid" (so called by historians) dynasty took over. This new empire called itself Eranshahr the "‘Empire of the Aryans", more reguarly translated as Iran (although the Romans failed to recognise this until many years after, and still refered to the people as Parthians!).

The Sassanid rulers of Persia ruled over territories roughly encompassing parts of today's Iran, Iraq, Armenia, Afghanistan, parts of Turkey, parts of Syria, Northern India, Pakistan, Caucasia, Central Asia and Arabia. These territories were hotly contested throughout most of the Sassanid dynasty, with borders neighbouring the Eastern Roman empire, Arabs and Kushans, and during the late 5th Century, was invaded by the Hephthalites. As a result the land the Sassanids controlled constantly fluctuated and changed as it's various enemies tried to conquer it, with the capitol of Ctesiphon falling at points in it's history.

The rulers of Eranshahr pursued a huge cultural identity, modelling itself on the Golden Age of Persia under the Achaemenids. A key aspect of this cultural revolution was a return to Zoroastrianism after hundreds of years of a mix of Hellenic, Jewish/Christian and Persian religion. Another part was it's goal of re-unifiying the old Persian empire, which brought it into conflict with the Eastern Romans, and at times, managed to accomplish this, but never managed to hold on to the territory.

Second Century History (Up to the Reign of Bahram II)

The Sassanid Empire began when Ardashir I, grandson of Sassan, the great priest of the Temple of Temple of Anahita, rebelled against his older brother Shapur, the current ruler of Persis.

From this he rapidly expanded, taking territories on the eastern side of the Euphrates (which can easily be compared in significance to Caesar crossing the Rubicon), and act which drew the attention of the Parthians, then led by King Artabanus IV, who led an army against him, and in 224AD, the two forces clashed at Hormizdeghan, taking the Parthian leader to his grave, and providing the chance for Ardashir to seize the lands on the west of the Euphrates. He was crowned Shahanshah - "King of Kings" in 225AD.

Over the next few years, Ardashir further expanded his new empire to the east and northwest, conquering the provinces of Sistan, Gorgan, Khorasan, Margiana, Balkh, and Chorasmia. Bahrain and Mosul were also added to Sassanid possesions. Furthermore, the kings of Kushan, Turan, and Mekran recognized Ardashir as their overlord. In the West, assaults against Hatra, Armenia and Adiabene met with less success.

When in 241, Ardashir died, his son Shapur I followed this expansion up with a number of stunning sucesses against the Roman empire, conquering Antioch, defeating Gordian III, Philip the Arab and Valerian (who was famously used as a step for Shapur when mounting his horse, then upon dying had his flayed skin nailed to the door of the Persian King's Palace. Victories such as these were preserved in magnificent stone reliefs, as a testamount to these shortlived conquests, when between 260 and 263, Odaenathus, then leader of the Palmyrenes, a strong Roman ally, who took the fight back to the Sassanids, driving them back, and reclaiming much of the East, which, without his help, would have likely fallen totally into Persian hands.

Shapur I however, is not just famous for his military strength, since he also led a sucessful reform of the urban population. Introducing a greater degree of religious flexibility, presenting Manichaeism (a religion, whos leader Mani was however later crucified- or may have died in prison waiting for it by the Sassanids in 276 -when Bahram II came into power) for trying to combine Judaism, Christianity and Zoastronism) as an alternative, and allowing Western settlers into the cities far more reguarly.

Decades Preceding Imperia Romana

Later rulers were not so successful until 310, seeing a period of difficulties, with both religion (such as the previously mentioned death of Mani and persecution of Manicharists) and an influx of attacks from the Eastern and Southern sides of the Empire (the homeland of the first Sassanid leaders Fars was plundered by Arabs), and it was not until Shapur II (who is said to have been the only King crowed In Utero) came into power, and soon began the first Golden Age of the Sassanid Empire.

He first drove the Arabs out of the south of Eranshahr, and then launched a minor campaign against the Romans, with small sucesses, before turning east to combat the Hephthalite invasion of the East. After Beating them back, the campaign against the Romans resumed, as the Emperor Julian began to push back against them. Despite generally being regarded as a great King, he was placed against an equally competant Julian, and in the end, it was the work of an unknown Sassanid Lancer that brought an end to both Julians life and the bloody conflict the two leaders waged on each other. Under Shapur II, the policy of religious intolerance was sealed, as the Avesta was finalised, ending the religious diversity almost completely in the region (which was continued under the Islamic caliphate) as a direct competition to Constantines Christian reforms.

From here the Sassanid Empire must either continue from Shapur's goldern age, or fall to the rich Eastern Romans, maybe even make peace with them as the Barbarian hordes descend it is all up to you to decide the outcome....

Hi Gazi,
This is a very old thread. I'm afraid those icons no longer exist on the server. There have been many changes since these topics were originally started.

The IR team have been much more active on total war center.

I'm hoping to update this section at the guild very soon.

Your Savaran are quite good, though I don't think the Gyanavspa were commoners. From my understanding, all Savaran were nobles of some sort.

Also I was under the impression that the Sassanians only starting using shields in a later period.

Can any of the team confirm If this mod is discontinued/abandoned?

If so could you please put together what you have made so far,
upload it and provide me with a link to the download,
someone else may well take it up at a later time

If this mod has moved to a dedicated site please provide me with a link.

four months is a long time to go "quiet" in the community
(considering there is no "beta" version that people can play)

many thanks
B.

It is with regret that I now announce the closure of Imperia Romana.
Lesten and myself took over as heads of IR in January, and although there has been slow but steady progress since then, we became unhappy with the modification for BI for a number of reasons.
Like most of the projects currently on TWC, the core group became very small. There were somewhere in the region of 52 people listed as developers, but for a period of time there was just myself, Lesten and Phate still actively working on the mod.
In April we suffered a series of technical problems (actually we tend to refer to it as ‘cursed April’). Lesten’s PC died first. Mine then followed suit, and just as we had both spent a lot of money we weren’t expecting to have to pay out, the Imperia Romana board suffered a terminal database failure which couldn’t be fixed. Phate also had an x-box malfunction but it didn’t really affect us. Needless to say all of this brought the whole thing to a standstill for about six weeks. Losing that momentum was hard to get over.
The input from our researchers prior to that happening, and our own developing understanding of the whole ‘Barbarian Invasion’ timeline caused us to be frustrated at not being able to represent the peoples and factions of that time adequately. The ‘clone’ armies of BI just doesn’t sit well with the late Roman era. Constantly we were deciding ‘should this unit wear chain mail?’ or ‘should they be hairy and un-armoured?’ or ‘should they have bits of roman equipment or not?’ Very few of the planned factions had a ‘uniform’ appearance, including the Romans. In BI if one soldier wears armour; his whole squad has to wear armour. The look just never felt right. This wouldn’t be quite so crucial in a different period.
With IR, we inherited some political issues, most of which were from before we even joined. Although this didn’t have a huge impact on what we were doing, from a morale point of view it was a bit crappy.
At this juncture I would like to offer a public apology to Attila Reloaded. Although I stand by everything I said in a statement a few months ago, I realise that things have been said in the past which were hurtful and unnecessary, and for those I am genuinely sorry. I also know full well that had we taken you up on your offer of mixing and matching your unit’s with ours and Lusted’s that we would have been much further forward with IR by the time the curse of April was upon us. As you said at the time; it was our loss.
There was also a feeling of pressure with IR, seeing as it appeared to have had half of the membership of TWC as developers at one time or another. To be honest, it never really felt like our mod, despite there being only one member of the original team still active. Taking over as joint directors, the IR board was like a big house full of the ghosts of past modders.
Last month, while still working on the map and various units, we finally made the difficult decision to end it.
We apologise to everyone who has been waiting for IR, but it really was time to shoot the poor old horse through the head. I’d also like to thank everyone for the positive comments over the past few months… and blow a huge raspberry to the negative few.
We have had a few requests for different elements of IR to be released or given. Unfortunately we cannot do that as we aren’t sure just how much we will be using in the current project. The traits system is not completed and is integral to IR, and as it’s still technically a work in progress, Lesten quite rightly doesn’t wish to part with it just yet. The completed models and skins will be upgraded and (where possible) converted into the M2 format. Having seen a brief video preview of an early version of M2, we do not currently know if the map will be useful to us at a later date.
