View Full Version : A Roman Era Mod For M2TW? - Damn yes, I'd say!

Our forums outside of TWC have moved to invisionsfree, because it's better, safer, and faster:
Ortus Romani New Forums (http://www.ortusromani.medievaltw.com/)

Modders, friends, RTW fans - RTW timeframe fans at least.

I have heard a lot of people suggest a Roman Era mod for the upcoming M2TW, and I love the idea. I simply like the RTW timeframe more than the Medieaval timeframe (or the BI timeframe, I may add). Also I like the units more, like Berserkers, Roman Legionaries, Elephants, etc.

Well, knowing there is interest in the community for such a mod is one thing - finding dedicated souls who are willing to put time and skill into such a total conversation mod, is a completely different matter, and finding a skilled team of people who are interested and are able to work together, is harder than one would imagine.

That said, I do think that there will be a greater ammount of people interested in modding M2TW, than people who are willing to start on a RTW mod right now.

I ask any modder who is interested in seeing a RTW mod on an improved engine, whith improved graphics and new features and possiblities, to think about joining our team - our team, I say, but right now there's no team, only me. I would do the 2dArt part, the unit cards, etc. I would also provide reference material for modellers and skinners, etc.

So we'd need: :evil4:

modellers and skinners, of course
map makers (meh, sounds dull, any better expression for that?)
coders
scripters
people who can provide reference material
people for writing campaign descriptions, unit description, etc.
every kind sould who is willing and skilled enough to help us in any other way

It would be great if we could form a team for such a mod - I'm sure it would be appreciated by many people, apart of that, for everyone interested in that period, it will be fun to work on such a mod, I guess.

And which RTR, EB, TE, etc. fan wouldn't love to see a Roman Era mod for M2TW? Wouldn't like to see Cohorts of Legionaries in which the soldiers have various beatiful shield designs, wouldn't like to see bloody Legionaries, dropped weapons on the ground?

Let's make this our task, I say, moving the Roman Era units, buildings, and history to the M2TW engine. All the major mods are either nearing completion, or are completed. Why not unite this experinced and skilled modders to form a team and make this mod, of which I know that a lot of people would like to see it?

Please, if you think you can help us (or me, at this stage), join us (me)! :beerchug:

Hope this all works out. The era would certainly benefit from the more complex city and fortress possibilities. Best of luck with this!

And just as a little teaser, some awsome units from Ancient Wars. (Some guys from Anicent Wars will join us once M2TW is out):

From Here (http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=59074)

I guess their MTW models and skins will be even better, thanks to the improved engine!

And our map could be something like that:

i have a question why are you doing a roman mod m2tw and how did you get those models did you make them from a demo or something :help:

I simply like the RTW timeframe more than the Medieaval timeframe...
Me too. I'm looking forward to this mod. To the AP, the OP answered both questions: he likes the timeframe better, and those models are from Ancient Wars.

....well, a Rome mod for MTW2 obviously sounds good, and I'm sure that all the teams currently working on the different ancient era mods will be happy to make in the future updated versions of their mods working on the new engine. But the true matter is that we don't know if MTW2 will be moddable at all, and if it is possible to provide a total conversions to a different era or if only minor changes will be allowed ...I suppose that the new game, if moddable, will be probably more complex than RTW so modding will be more time consuming (another point: how long we have to wait until the necessary tools like converters, map utilities etc. will be released? .....weeks, months, years...) and maybe in the near future CA will release a RTW2 game, who does know?

I'm really disappointed that no answer was given by CA to the many different questions asked by the community about the modding capabilities of the new engine...

Solon of Athens

I agree, no-one has any idea how moddable M2TW will be, we just hope for atleast RTW standard, hopefully with less restrictions, like more Faction Slots...

won't an good mtw2 mod based on the roman period make the rtw obsolete?

Yes, this mods main focus is realism, but we don't want to detratc from the gameplay at all. With all the graphical effects and new features of M2TW, this mod should be excellent to play and historical, imagine Roman Legionnaries fighting in the night, as 1000's of Gauls charge towards them, or the detail of the units getting better and better the more weapons upgrades you get...:2thumbsup:

Are you still looking for members to help you? If so, I would be willing. Having modded before I do have some experience. I am also good at subtitling, provided I know what all the words are.

If it is going to be a realism mod what new buildings will there be. I read that members of EB will be joining you. Does that mean that we get the EB team's lovley ideas?

Yes, we have modders coming from a lot of mods. VandalCarthage from EB, Annuak and BDH from RTR, Xprime from Ancient Wars, Goscinio and Octavius/Kasetuh from Rise of Persia, lt1956 creator of SPQR mod, Darth Vader to do the formations and many more...

And they will all bring ideas with them, but first and foremost this is a realism mod, and will have realistic ideas...

Just want to chime in with my support for your efforts. Sounds like you have lots of talent committed to the project. I am sure I will like MTW2, but a mod with the new features of MTW2 that covers the Roman Era will be absolutely fantastic.:2thumbsup:

Has CA simply nixed the idea of doing their own R2TW? Would hate to see a lot of effort wasted? Some of the ideas and illustrations aforementioned are marvelous.

So what's with CA? do they not want to upgrade RTW? Anyone know?

Wow this looks so cool! I love the roman era and now can have it with mtw2 graphics! You all seem very talented so i want to say :2thumbsup: GOOD LUCK:2thumbsup: !!! and im getting this as soon as it comes out!

BTW im very impressed by ur campaign map........all the way to India.
Will there be any Chinese/Oriental, Non-Nomadic factions? that'd be awesome(looks like you could squeeze the Qin in the Northeast corner, provided its the right timeframe)

I read that this is a Realism Mod, that INSTANTLY puts me off. I must note that after nasty experiences with "historical" RTR I have gone off Realism mods. Will it be a historical realism mod and will it have lots of new buildings compared to vanilla RTW.

I have also read that somebody in the EB team suggested that the mods merge, will this actually happen?

i never liked R:TW, and M2:TW looks to be a great improvement, so i would be delighted to see a good Rome total conversion done on the new game.

A few questions:
1.seeing as the phalanx isnt in mtw2,only the pike phalanx, wouldnt it be pretty hard to do.

2. Idont really know what roman era cities realistically looked like, but how would you transform the mtw:2 cities into roman ones, with all the layers of walls ect.

I can be a historian. I believe that I'm pretty qualified for the job, as I am a historical reenactor with Cohors II Legio II of Colorado.

I may also be able to do some skinning work, and I'd be more than happy to help make trailers and so forth.

Waiting for your reply :2thumbsup:

OR has succesfully folded into EB, and we are now helping with finishing EB 0.8, and EB 1.0. Then we will all have a go at M2TW, and start developing EB 2.

That was the first good message. Now a lot of you think "great, awsome news!" and some others think "No, I wanted a unique mod!"

Well, you'll get a unique mod too, it's kinda the "cherry on the ice-cream":

Silverguard (Tree) has burdened the task to take over OR and not let it die, and turn it into a mini-mod (expansion) for EB 2, so everybody who wants to add stuff to EB 2, and is not entirely satisfied with EB 2, will have the option to download and install OR. Such Mini-mods have been very succesfull for various great mods, like for RTR.

Thereby, I resign from my leading position at OR; all hail Silverguard!

He will be leading OR, a submod of EB 2, from now on, and I guess he'll open a recruitment thread soon, and structure everything.

Thanks,

K.K
