Question: how are you going to conduct diplomacy? 40 PMs, especially if you're going to keep your sent messages, is not a lot. You can't do it in public, as the essence of Diplomacy is giving different messages to different people. My suggestion would be for each player to keep 2 text files, one for messages they've received, the other for messages they've sent. That way, they can play Diplomacy and keep their inbox clear.
Another suggestion for later games - countries should be randomly distributed to keep things fresh, otherwise there will be Russia or England specialists who play nothing else.
Alright this looks awesome, I'd like France sil-vous-plait :laugh4:

Sure, I'll take Italy.
Lord Winter
09-09-2006, 18:05
I'll take england
Um, IA already asked for that...
You may be stuck with Russia or Austria-Hungaria...
But think on the positive side, with Russia you have a trustworthy neighbour like me...
um, how exactly does one resolve combats with neutral territory (just walk in and proclaim it's yours, I assume?)

Sorry didn't see that. I'll take russia then.
I guess I'll take Austria-Hungary
Time to begin Orb-style diplomacy
And, Ig, do we choose what army type (land or fleet) we get on conquering an army-giving province?

I'm a master diplomat aren't I Glaucus?
You really strive to make a compromise fit for both parties, and I respect that.
When Ignoramus says so. I think we will PM our orders to him when the time comes. Until then, lie cheat and steal in order to get alliances and such.
Ignoramus
09-11-2006, 01:35
Right. The game will start in 48 hours time. Until then, make alliances and use diplomacy etc. I will answer your questions shortly.

Guys, just a word about the diplomacy. As in real life diplomacy, no agreements are binding. You can draw up written treaties, agreements etc., but nothing is binding.
Also, I'd appreciate it if you pmed me your agreements with other nations etc. I will not tell anyone, as I am the impartial referee, but I can make a write-up at the end of the game, like GH does in the mafia, so I'd appreciate it you would. Of course, if you'd prefer to keep your plans secret from me, you are more than welcome to do so.
Ignoramus
09-11-2006, 09:06
We can start earlier than 48 hours if everyone agrees, it was just to give all the players time to engage in diplomacy, and to read the rules.

Actually, Italy is rated as the worst country.
But to quote a German: "In Berlin the situation is serious, but it is not serious. In Vienna the situation is desperate, but it is not serious." Also: "We have shackled ourselves to a corpse.
Austria-Hungary would be quite an interesting nation to play, actually.
I was just going by what the Wiki article said I must have read it wrong. Well I'm sure I'll be able to do pretty good anyways. :P
I good with starting earlier Ignoramus.
every competition has a loser :sweatdrop:

Being one of the weaker nations has its advantages though. The stronger nations might be ganged up against by the other nations.
So were starting in two days alright I'll be ready by then

The game has now started. Can everyone please send(by PM) me their orders? Also, if you'd like to tell me your diplomatic situation can you please do so?

I take it that new army formation is done in public?
Wait, do we build this turn, or next?

Builds after the next turn.
Al Khalifah

Interesting start... seems to be a lot of power being concentrated into the middle of the board.
I take it that new army formation is done in public?
But if army formation is done in public then surely I can just wait for other people to form their armies and then base my decisions on theirs? No one with any sense would form an army before anyone else unless they have no options.

I'll need orders again.
Could someone explain the exact turn sequence to me:
I think it is:
diplomacy
movement
moves revealed and combats resolved
army creation/disbanding
Ignoramus
09-19-2006, 11:55
Yep, that's right. Army creation/disbanding is only done every second turn.

Aren't builds normally sent in with each autumn turn? IIRC it's normal Dip practice to time the stab so your former ally doesn't get to build as he anticipated, and this tactic doesn't work if people get to see the results of the autumn moves before deciding on builds.
Al Khalifah
09-19-2006, 14:48
I always assumed they were made once people knew. Since people can never be quite sure what they're going to get.
Plus what would happen in the case of oppurtunity builds? Where an army is able to retreat onto a neutral/enemy supply centre and claim an extra build.
Makes sense that they are done secretly (and quickly) after the resolution of the autumn turn. Technically there is not meant to be any discussion between players between autumn and winter - but we can hardly enforce that here.
When are orders for Fall 1901 in for?
Ignoramus, whats the final verdict, we send in moves then you update the map and then we send in builds?

No, there's an extra phase for it, since it explicitly states that no discussion between players may be made for it (or the retreat phase). If builds were written during the main orders phase, then that would facilitate discussion of construction.

So err... has the ship sailed on me being Germany?
I think we got someone, sorry mate. I hope there will be more of these though, its a great idea and is very fun so far, just negotiating a few moves is loads of fun.

Sorry Silver, you just missed out. But if other people drop out, you'll be the first replacement.
Also, there will be plenty more games after this one.
Al Khalifah

My moves are in.
On the first page in the list of players for Germany it just says empty. Should this not be changed to Brother Mark ? Since he seems to be sending me messages claiming to be Germany - I assume he is unless this is some very elaborate plot....
Just so that the other players know.

Yes, Brother Mark is Germany. I just forgot to put his name there. I'll fix it now.

Ignoramus
09-25-2006, 10:57
I don't have all the orders yet.
Kommodus
09-25-2006, 14:07
Just a quick suggestion: In most real games of diplomacy, a limit is placed on the amount of time given to write orders. Otherwise, the game turns into a prohibitively lengthy affair.
I suggest you do the same here: you could give everyone a nice long period of time (say 3-4 days) but after that units who haven't received orders are given an automatic "hold" order. If the time limit is indefinite, this game stands a significant chance of dying before it gets off the ground.
Al Khalifah
09-25-2006, 15:14
I agree. It's not really moving at the moment.
