Yes, the inevitable happened. My system had another crash a few days ago, the second time in under half a year. Last time one of my internal memory sticks got burned, now my HD is completely death (damnit, I should have made more back-ups !) and I suspect my motherboard is damaged too. Put simply: there is little reason to revive the old beast.

So I just ordered a new system ! I'm keeping the case, cd and dvd drives and am replacing the internal parts:

processor: intel core 2 duo E6600
motherboard: MSI p965 Platinum
RAM memory: 2GB PC800 kingmax dual channel
HD: western digital Caviar SE16 320GB
Videocard: ATI Radeon X1900XT 512mb

I didn't really have much time to look around since I need a computer fast (even so it's still going to take a couple of weeks to get built). I hope everything is still readily available and I hope it will last me another 5 years or so. No need to tell you it's costing a lot, by my standards at least :sweatdrop:.

Wow.

Just, wow.

Blows my system out of the water.

Your PC is at least twice as good as mine, if not better.

Looks like a very nice rig, doc_bean, hope you have much fun with it!

MSI P965 Platinum motherboard is ... You don't want to heard. Somebody sell you probably the worst P965 motherboard. Everybody buys Gigabyte or ASUS as they are currently the best for OC. With the cheapest E6300 with those mobos you can easy reach 3.0 GHz with box cooler.

Lesson:
Never buy so fast.:laugh4:

Hmm, I've heard some good things about the 965 chipset. I don't think our friend has gottn a gimped rig.

[edit]

Hexus (http://www.hexus.net/content/item.php?item=6702&page=9) likes it: "The MSI P965 Platinum gets our Gaming Speed award in recognition of its all-round performance and good overclocking."

It's not problematic P965 chipset. Problem is MSI. :book: The best budget P965 mobos are ASUS P5B and Gigabyte DS-3. WHo has money buy ASUS P5B Deluxe or Gigabyte DQ-6.:2thumbsup:

Well, I don't mean to be a hypocrite -- I've always stuck with Asus motherboards. But Hexus is a fairly serious enthusiast's site, so I wouldn't dismiss their opinion out of hand.

Also, it seems a bit pointless and unkind to criticize a fella's rig after he's just bought it ...

I've had some trouble with ASUS motherboards, the MSI's always worked fine, I don't plan on overclocking so I don't see a serious problem with the mobo.

Of course, the effects of the mobo on performance is one of the things I am completely clueless about :dizzy2:

I had a very similar experience... my old xp2500 rig is now religated to file server duties! ;) Well, that is it will be if I ever get a new hd for it!

My new one is as follows:

E6600 currently at stock
1 gig ddr2 (will be 2 gig by the end of the year)
ASUS P5B (using onboard sound till i sae up a bit more)
7900GT 256
500w PSU
Thermaltake Soprano case
250gig Samsung hdd

Heres to our new systems!:2thumbsup: Made all the sweeter by sticking to our old machines for so long!

First off, death is the noun, dead the adjective.~;)

But your rig looks pretty nice, hope you'll get it soon.:2thumbsup:

Sounds more dramatic naming your old system the grim reaper though...

It has arrived !

Not to my exact specifications due to delivery issues. The motherboard is now an intel 965, and the gfx card is now a GeForce 7950 GT, which I'm a little disappointed about.

I ran into some problems trying to install Linux (the 965 chipset causes a lot of problems, apparently) but I've managed to get Kubuntu up and running (thanks to an additional USB dvd rom).

I'll try out some games and demos tonight, I hope it was worth the wait :jester:
