Hi guys new around here - dont have the game yet ! i wanted to ask if it is possible to save battle replays from mp battles.

I was playing around with the Supreme Commander Beta these days and one of the nice things about it is that there are a few sites constantly posting replays and discussing the strategies of both players... gets people more involved :)

my question would be... is there such a thing in M2TW MP ?

Well i guess just uploading the file to a free upload service - like rapid share then posting about it (stuff like me vs whomever) - i for one would really be intrested in watching some if there were good players involved - quite entertaining methinks

are the replays in a normal media format, or do you need to load them into
mt2 to look at them.

In Iraq so I can't get a good enough computer to play it :(
sand is too damaging to electronics here, stuff goes out alot.

Unfortunately you have to have MTW2. Actually a "replay" is just a series of commands and your computer have to recalculate the whole battle. (that is why "replays" can differ on from the original battle)

What Cheetah says is very true. Your men will be shown setup initially the way you were and will obey your actual movement and unit select commands, but the unit vs. unit fighting may have a different outcome than your actual game. They really need to fix that, since it makes the feature not very useful in training, and discussions of strategy/tactics.

If you want to see some good MP replays, with vote and comments (in italian :2thumbsup:) go to this forum:

There are a lot of them, included some extreme battles between LunaRossaRikimaru and Wolf_Paolai!:

. . . They really need to fix that, since it makes the feature not very useful in training, and discussions of strategy/tactics. . . .

not to mention its bad for tournaments because sometimes the replay needs to be examined by the tourney judges to resolve a close match; for example, a critical game that got dropped in the final moments. Since the replays are not always reliable, it makes refereeing them tough. Of course its better than no replay at all.

I think the problem is with the "seed" number used to calculate all the random variables in the game. If the replay starts with the wrong "seed" number, then all the "dice rolls" (if you are a wargamer or role player) will be different than what happened originally.

Anyway, I dont understand why the seed number cant be reproduced accurately--but if I recall correctly this was the explanation given by CA in prior TW's.

It's true that starting with a different seed number will give different combat results, but the problem seems to be deeper than that because some replays work. As in RTW, the problem may well be associated with certain unit types having their combat results calculated differently on different cpu's. The problem was fixed in RTW v1.2, but it took considerable effort to track it down. The problem resurfaced in RTW v1.3, and my understanding is that it was corrected in RTW v1.5.
