Okay, so I go into the export_descr_character_traits file in the data folder and remove all triggers for some of the traits I don't like. Then I happily start a new game and play a few turns. My first family member comes of age with the following Vices:

Effete (from the "Infertile" line)
Distrusts Technology (from the "Bad Engineer" line)

I doublechecked, and there are no triggers left for either of these trait lines.

What am I missing?

Have you removed them from the export_vnvs file as well?

Also I've found that the first time round after modding the traits files some of my characters have strange traits appearing for them (such as female-only traits and that kind of thing)

Ive had the same problem..
editing the triggers only shoudl only determine what kind of traits they could get
at least it did in RTW

Even after running the unpacker, the game still uses the packed, vanilla files by default. To use your edited files, use modswitch (http://totalwarcommunity.blogspot.com/2006/11/modding-medieval-ii.html)

Thanks Kobal2fr. And for any of you "modding dummies" out there (like me) who don't even know what a "bat" file is, let alone how to create one, I would highly recommend downloading ShellShocks's MedManager. Find it here:

http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=68328

It took me 3 minutes to download and install, and it has solved all of my minor modding problems.

Thank you ShellShock!
