Along the sames line of making the hoplites phalanx realistic.
in the descr_model_battle, change the skeleton from fs_swordsman to fs_spearman. This should make them attack with the gladius with a thrusting movement.

you can see they are holding there weapon differently.
It is not perfect, but it can help.
