A question about the faction limit

The number of factions are limited to 31, including the rebels, according to various sources. However, I wonder, is that the limit that the game files can handle, or the limit of active factions available on the campaign map at any given time?

The limit of 31 factions is per Campaign.
I believe if you use the Mod Switch Folder, you will be able to make more campaign maps and also, more factions...

For example: 31 factions of Campaign 1 + 31 factions of Campaign 2 + 31 factions of Campaign 3 = 93 factions...

The limit also applies to custom battles, etc.
So for pretty much any sensible use the limit is 30 + slave.
