I've been working on a wales minimod for medieval 2 total war, that adds wales as a playable faction.

This is alpha 2, and is incomplete (coa done, territories done, most units added),
I still need to add specialize units as well as calvary, and other units. I also need to work on authenticity of units.

This comes from some work of my own on the infamous .sd files,

Thanks for alpaca for cracking the .sd file format, and his continued work while I have been disabled with a hand ache.

It can be downloaded from:

http://www.wikiupload.com/download_page.php?id=94759

Tell me what you think (there is more to come) Roy.

to be honest, wales should of been on the game in the first place!!

I think its scum how they were not on it!

I mean Wales has more Castles per-mile any any other country in the hole wide world, And they just throw that away.

men of harlech is by far the best medieval song, yet again welsh...Shocks me how people put the revolting scummy taigs on their mods instead of the welsh...:furious3:

Hi

I might have some info regarding historical units/specialist units etc. I have some books on the subject that I could dig out.

I could rustle up some skins as well if you want? I have some experience with photoshop though I haven't skinned previously I have been playing around with the unit skins since the unpacker was released.

I'll dig up some :)

Not very impressive yet, still very infant mainly I wanted to have a COA, mods for the faction selection screen as well as units.

I'll post the latest folder later.

I'm noticing something weird (maybe only on mine), if I don't set the access and modification times on all of the files in my ME2TW to the same date after coping the files, I get CTDs with "unspecified errors". Anyone know what causes that?

the one on 3ddownloads is apparently a buggy beta, I found that out when I restarted the project after the break, part of it appearently has something to do with timestamps. When I ran cygwin "touch filename" on all files in the ME2TW total war directory after copying my files over the game worked again (except that I had to do some fixes to the export files.

:dizzy2:

Let me take the newest version, do a sanity check, and email it to you to upload (if I email it to you, could you also do me a favor and do a sanity check on it to see if it works).

Roy.

UPDATE: upgraded to 1.2, unpacked .pack files using unpacker, copied current unstable source (not downloadable yet) into medieval 2 total war folder (mod failed to load), then ran 'for i in `find .`; do touch "$i"; done' in cygwin, mod now runs. Not sure why though.

aparently the mod requires the game to be unpacked, and the timestamps of all files updated. Not sure why though, maybe someone can help me with this.

I'll upload the mod to the wiki source, and then let you try it again.

UPDATE 2: should be at http://www.wikiupload.com/download_page.php?id=189900

Unit Authenticity

Warband:

I managed to dig out some of my books. Information is pretty sketchy but what seems to come over is that the bulk of the Welsh clung to a traditional "Warband Style" of fighting till quite late.

Certainly at the start of of the time period covered by M2:TW they should be lobbing 2 javelins and charging at the enemy trying to sweep them away with the ferocity of the initial charge.

Welsh Warband should be fast moving and lightly equipped with 2 Javelins, round or oval shield and a melee weapon - probably a shortsword/long knife or short spear.

I'd favour the long knife as Warband shouldn't really have a bonus vs cavalry. The Normans cavalry swept them away easily in open terrain.

They probably should be fast moving with good stamina.

They should have a low moral factor as Geraldus Camberensis tells us that if the enemy resist the initial charge then the Welsh usually take flight. (it's possible that this may on occasion have been with a view to luring a pursuit into ambush (conjecture on my part there!) so possibly they should be able to feign a rout.)

I take this to mean that they cannot stand toe to toe with regular, well disciplined infantry in open terrain.

Whilst they have low morale I would however make them impetuous - prone to charging without orders. They should be un-trained with disordered ranks as these guys are not full time professionally drilled soldiers but tribal warriors/pastoral herdsmen.

The should have a bonus to fighting in Woods and rough terrain with the usual european penalty to fighting in the desert!!!

Hey matey, When i download your mod and open it i get

"The archive is either in unknown format or damaged"

It seems as if nothing is on the download as it takes a second to d/l, Is anyone else having this problem?

wonderful :furious3:

I guess though thats what I get for using a free web server

originally going to use 3d downloads, but got impatient with them the first time, because it took them alot longer then the 24-48 hour period mentioned.

I could try uploading to them again.

should be an easy fix, any suggestions?

(don't know how to change battle colors, not sure how to start on that one, any good faqs might be helpful, won't be able to do it if it requires using 3dmax)

sounds interesting, do you know of any faqs I could look into for that one?
I keep putting it off, because it sounds tough to do :embarassed:

P.S. any word on how the Kingdom's Wales faction looks historically/playability wise? If they did a good job on them in the game we might be able to borrow the faction from there and plop them into main campaign without having to do too much.

I've thought a good few times now that if you can have sub campaigns like britannia that which ever country comes out on top should get to play in the main campaign... I've won as wales. So if you finish this, message me, I'd like to play it. Also, dw i'n gallu siarad cymraeg mwy na tipyn bach, so if you need translation, giz a message.

I think you should use the Wales faction coat of arms that is from the Britania Campaign. and are you gonna add the Saxons, Irish, and Normans too? :D

The Saxons and Normas by this point in history are represented by England, the Irish would be a suitable faction though altough it would have to be one of the Irish kingdoms (Ulaid, Southern Ui Niall, Northern Ui Niall, Meath, Leinster, Connaught, or Munster) rather than a united Irish faction.
